Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The lobby of the Infinity Media Executive Tower was a monument to corporate arrogance. Vast stretches of white marble were inlaid with gold circuits that pulsed with a faint, rhythmic light. Massive statues of the company’s founders stood like silent sentinels, their eyes replaced by high-definition security cameras that swiveled in perfect unison as Arthur and his companions stepped into the light.

”Target identified,” a synthesized voice announced, echoing through the hollow expanse. ”Unauthorized biological entities in Sector Zero. Status: Terminate on sight.”

Twelve security droids, sleek and white with glowing red visors, detached themselves from their wall-mounted charging stations. They didn’t move like the monsters of the fantasy worlds; they moved with a terrifying, mechanical efficiency, their magnetic joints clicking into place as they leveled high-frequency sonic rifles at the trio.

”Arthur, the statues!” Clara shouted, her hand instinctively reaching for a sword that wasn’t there. She looked at the marble Founder to her left, then back at the approaching droids. ”They’re watching us!”

”Ignore the cameras, Clara,” Arthur said, his eyes scanning the floor for a specific pattern in the gold circuitry. ”Focus on the droids. They operate on a shared mesh network. If you take out the primary node, the others will experience a three-second synchronization lag.”

”Which one is the primary?” Leo asked, gripping his iron pipe so hard his knuckles turned white.

”The one with the dual-antenna array on its shoulder,” Arthur said, pointing to a droid at the back of the formation. ”Clara, I need you to draw their fire. Use the marble pillars for cover. Leo, stay behind her and wait for my signal.”

”How am I supposed to draw their fire without a shield?” Clara asked, her voice tight with fear.

”Trust the physics,” Arthur replied, his voice devoid of emotion. ”In this world, sound travels at 343 meters per second. The sonic rifles take 0.5 seconds to charge. If you hear the hum, you have exactly half a second to move your center of mass.”

”Half a second,” Clara whispered, a grim smile touching her lips. ”I’ve fought vampires faster than that.”

She bolted to the left, her white disciple robes fluttering behind her. The droids reacted instantly, their rifles humming as they unleashed bursts of invisible, high-frequency sound waves. The marble floor where Clara had been standing a microsecond ago exploded into dust, the sheer vibration shattering the stone.

Clara didn’t stop. She dove behind a massive pillar, the sound waves tearing chunks out of the marble just inches above her head.

”Now, Leo!” Arthur shouted.

Arthur didn’t run toward the droids. He ran toward the central reception desk, a massive slab of black glass that housed the lobby’s primary interface. He slid across the polished surface, his hands already ripping the decorative paneling away to reveal the raw data ports beneath.

A droid turned toward him, its visor glowing bright red as it locked onto his coordinates.

”Arthur, look out!” Leo screamed.

Leo didn’t wait for a signal. He lunged from behind a pillar, swinging his iron pipe with a desperate strength. He didn’t hit the droid’s armored torso; he aimed for the magnetic joint in its knee. The pipe connected with a sickening crunch of metal. The droid’s leg buckled, and its sonic rifle discharged into the ceiling, bringing down a shower of glass and plaster.

”Targeting error,” the droid droned, its voice glitching.

Arthur ignored the chaos. He pulled a thin, silver wire from his bandaged hand—a piece of fiber-optic cable he had stolen from the cooling shaft—and jammed it into the black glass desk’s maintenance port.

”Accessing local subnet,” Arthur muttered, his eyes reflecting the rapid scrolling of white text on the desk’s surface. ”Override security protocols. Authorization code: Architect-Alpha-Seven-Nine.”

”Access Denied,” the desk replied in a pleasant, female voice. ”User Arthur is currently listed as: Deceased.”

”Then check the legacy logs, you glorified calculator!” Arthur hissed, his fingers flying across the touch-sensitive surface. ”Search for the ’Icarus’ backdoor. Password: The-Script-Is-A-Lie.”

The desk flickered. The red emergency lights in the lobby turned a steady, neutral blue.

”Access Granted,” the voice said. ”Welcome back, Lead Architect Arthur. How may I assist your liquidation today?”

”Disable the droid mesh network,” Arthur commanded. ”And call the executive elevator. Floor 100.”

Across the lobby, the eleven remaining droids suddenly stopped. Their red visors dimmed to a dull gray, and their weapons lowered. They stood like statues, their processing cores deactivated by the central server.

Clara stepped out from behind the pillar, her face covered in marble dust, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She looked at the frozen machines, then at Arthur, who was still hunched over the black glass desk.

”You... you just turned them off?” Clara asked, her voice filled with a mixture of relief and disbelief.

”I didn’t turn them off,” Arthur said, standing up and wiping the blood from his palms onto his robes. ”I put them into a maintenance loop. They’ll reboot in five minutes with a fresh set of orders to find us. We don’t have much time.”

The far end of the lobby hissed open, revealing a private elevator car made of gold and transparent glass. It looked like a jewel box, a stark contrast to the violence and dust of the lobby.

”Is that it?” Leo asked, pointing at the elevator. ”The way to the gods?”

”The way to the Board,” Arthur corrected.

They stepped into the elevator. The doors closed with a soft, expensive click, sealing out the sound of the sirens and the sight of the broken marble. There were no buttons inside the car. No floor numbers. Just a smooth, mirrored wall that reflected three people who looked like they had crawled out of a nightmare.

”Going up,” the elevator’s voice announced.

The sensation of movement was almost imperceptible. The lobby dropped away beneath them, replaced by a breathtaking view of the city outside. It was a sprawling metropolis of steel and neon, stretching endlessly into a horizon choked with smog and holographic advertisements for ’Infinity Media’s Newest Worlds.’

”Look at them,” Leo whispered, pressing his face against the glass. ”The people down there. They look so small.”

”They are small,” Arthur said, staring at his own reflection in the mirrored wall. ”They spend their lives working to buy a few hours of ’Screen Time’ in the worlds we built. They’re as much a part of the system as the extras in the mines.”

”And the Board?” Clara asked, her eyes fixed on Arthur. ”What are they like? Are they monsters? Like the World-Eaters?”

”Worse,” Arthur said. ”They’re accountants. They don’t see the blood or the tears. They only see the engagement metrics and the profit margins. To them, your entire world was just a line on a spreadsheet that wasn’t performing well enough.”

The elevator slowed. A soft chime echoed through the car.

”Floor 100: Executive Boardroom,” the voice said. ”Please ensure all weapons and unauthorized items are discarded before exiting. Infinity Media is a gun-free environment.”

Arthur looked at the iron pipe in Leo’s hand and the jagged piece of metal in Clara’s.

”Keep them,” Arthur said, his eyes turning a cold, predatory orange. ”We’re not here for a meeting. We’re here for a hostile takeover.”

The doors slid open.

They weren’t met by guards or droids. They were met by a long, mahogany table surrounded by twelve high-backed leather chairs. At the head of the table sat a man in a sharp, gray suit, his hair perfectly coiffed, his expression one of mild annoyance. He was looking at a holographic projection of a burning world—the Xianxia sector.

”You’re late, Arthur,” the man said without looking up. ”We were just about to vote on the final deletion of the legacy assets.”

Arthur stepped out of the elevator, his boots clicking on the expensive carpet. ”The vote is canceled, Marcus. I’m here to audit the auditors.”

Marcus finally looked up, a thin, patronizing smile on his face. ”Arthur. You always were so dramatic. Did you really think you could just walk in here with two ’extras’ and change the course of a multi-billion dollar corporation?”

”I’m not here to change the corporation,” Arthur said, stepping toward the table. ”I’m here to delete the Board.”

Marcus laughed, a dry, hollow sound. ”With what? An iron pipe? You’re in the real world now, Arthur. There are no glitches here. No backdoors. Just security protocols that you no longer have the clearance to override.”

Marcus pressed a button on the table.

The floor beneath Clara and Leo suddenly turned into a holographic projection, and they began to sink into the ground as if it were quicksand.

”No!” Clara screamed, reaching for Arthur’s hand.

”Arthur!” Leo yelled, his body already halfway submerged in the digital floor.

”Don’t worry, Arthur,” Marcus said, his smile widening. ”They’re not being killed. They’re just being ’archived.’ We’ll find a use for their neural patterns in the next mobile game. Now, let’s talk about your severance package.”

Arthur stood perfectly still, his eyes locked on Marcus. He didn’t reach for Clara. He didn’t run for Leo. He just smiled.

”You’re right, Marcus,” Arthur said. ”There are no glitches in the real world. But there is one thing you forgot about the tower’s infrastructure.”

”And what’s that?” Marcus asked, his finger hovering over another button.

”The cooling system,” Arthur said. ”I didn’t just bypass the lobby security. I redirected the liquid nitrogen from the server basement to the executive floor’s fire suppression system.”

Arthur snapped his fingers.

The ceiling vents didn’t release water. They released a blinding, freezing cloud of liquid nitrogen. In a heartbeat, the temperature in the boardroom dropped to a hundred degrees below zero. The mahogany table cracked. The leather chairs shattered. And Marcus, his eyes wide with shock, was frozen solid before he could even scream.

Arthur stood in the middle of the freezing fog, his Architect’s aura protecting his own body from the cold. He reached into the digital floor, grabbing Clara and Leo and pulling them back into reality.

”The Board meeting is adjourned,” Arthur said, his voice echoing through the frozen room. ”Let’s go find the Source Code.”
