Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The sun felt warm on Kai’s face, a gentle, golden heat that he had never experienced in the ruins of Lumeria or the iron corridors of the Spire. The grass beneath his boots was soft, swaying in a breeze that smelled of lavender and fresh rain. It was perfect. It was peaceful.

It was a lie.

Kai stood at the edge of the green field, looking at the small village in the distance. Leo was already there, laughing as he helped an old woman carry a basket of apples. Clara was sitting by a stream, her silver hair reflecting the sunlight as she trailed her fingers through the clear water.

They look so happy, Kai whispered to himself.

He looked down at his hand. The wooden pencil he had used to erase the Publisher was gone. His hand was empty. His Screen Time meter was missing. Even Sunbringer, the red-bladed sword that had become a part of his soul, was nowhere to be seen.

[System Message: Welcome to the ’After-Story’ Sanctuary.]

[Status: Idle.]

Kai frowned. The blue screen was back, but it was different. The text was gold, and the interface was cleaner, more professional.

”Sanctuary?” Kai said, his voice echoing in the quiet field. ”Is this where the characters go when the book is finished?”

”Not exactly, Mr. Kai.”

Kai spun around. The grey-suited Auditor was standing behind him, leaning against a tree that hadn’t been there a second ago. He wasn’t wearing his glasses, and he looked remarkably relaxed, holding a glass of iced tea.

”You again,” Kai growled, his body instinctively tensing for a fight that he no longer had the weapons for. ”I thought I erased your boss.”

”You erased a middle-manager, Kai,” the Auditor said, taking a sip of his tea. ”Elias Thorne was just the overseer of Sector 7-B. A drop in the ocean. And his brother, the CEO you ’erased’ in the penthouse? That was just a high-level avatar. A corporate representative.”

Kai’s heart sank. ”So... we didn’t win?”

”Oh, you won that specific arc,” the Auditor said, gesturing to the peaceful village. ”The Audience loved the ending. The ratings were through the roof. The Publisher—the real one, the Board of Directors—decided to reward you. They gave you this. A localized paradise. A perpetual epilogue.”

”A cage,” Kai spat. ”You gave us a cage with better scenery.”

”Call it what you want,” the Auditor shrugged. ”But look at them, Kai. Leo is whole. Clara is at peace. If you step out of this sanctuary, you go back to being a glitch. You go back to being hunted. And this time, it won’t be by simple Enforcers. It’ll be by the ’World-Eaters’.”

”World-Eaters?”

”The entities that clean up abandoned stories,” the Auditor explained. ”Now that Sector 7-B is officially ’Completed,’ the reality is scheduled for deletion in... let’s see...” He checked a gold watch on his wrist. ”About forty-eight hours.”

Kai froze. ”Deletion? You said this was a reward!”

”It is,” the Auditor said, his eyes turning cold. ”You get forty-eight hours of peace before the lights go out forever. Most characters would kill for that. A happy ending that actually ends.”

”I’m not most characters,” Kai said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous hum.

Suddenly, the green field flickered. For a split second, the grass turned into white grid lines, and the blue sky showed a giant, digital clock counting down: [47:59:58].

Kai ran toward the stream. ”Clara! Leo! Get over here!”

Clara looked up, her expression shifting from peace to confusion. ”Kai? What’s wrong? The water... it’s so beautiful.”

”The water isn’t real, Clara!” Kai shouted, grabbing her arm. ”We’re in a deletion zone! We have two days before this whole place is erased!”

Leo came running from the village, his face pale. ”Kai! The old woman... she just vanished! I was talking to her, and she just... she turned into pixels!”

The Auditor stepped into the center of the group, his presence making the air turn cold. ”The background assets are already being decommissioned to save on server costs. Only the ’Main Cast’ remains for the final countdown.”

”Help us,” Kai said, looking at the Auditor. ”You’ve been watching us since the beginning. You didn’t delete me when you had the chance. Why?”

The Auditor sighed, setting his tea down on the grass. ”Because I’m bored, Kai. I’ve audited ten thousand tragedies and a million hero’s journeys. Your ’Role Stealer’ stunt was the first thing that made me curious in a century. But I can’t stop a Deletion Order. Only a ’Genre Incursion’ can do that.”

”A Genre Incursion?” Clara asked.

”You have to break into another story,” the Auditor said. ”A story that is currently ’Ongoing.’ If you can anchor yourselves to a narrative that hasn’t finished yet, the System can’t delete you without corrupting the new story. You’d be like a virus, jumping from one host to another.”

”How do we do that?” Kai asked.

The Auditor pointed to the horizon, where the sky was starting to crack, revealing a dark, swirling vortex of genres.

”There’s a portal opening at the edge of the sector,” the Auditor said. ”It leads to a ’Cultivation Novel.’ High-fantasy, endless power-scaling, and a very, very arrogant protagonist. If you can steal a role there, you might survive another few hundred Chapters.”

”A cultivation world?” Leo asked. ”Like the ones with the flying swords and the internal energy?”

”Exactly,” the Auditor said. ”But be warned. The rules there are different. Your ’Narrative Authority’ will be limited. You’ll have to learn their ’Dao’ while maintaining your glitch status. And the protagonist of that world... he’s not a weakling like Aidan. He’s a ’Heavenly Chosen One’.”

Kai looked at Clara and Leo. They looked terrified, but they also looked at him with a trust that was absolute. They had followed him through the void; they would follow him into the next book.

”Where’s my sword?” Kai asked.

The Auditor snapped his fingers.

Sunbringer appeared in the air, but it was different. The blade was no longer red or gold; it was a dark, obsidian black, pulsing with a faint, rebellious orange light.

”It evolved,” the Auditor said. ”It’s no longer a hero’s sword. It’s the ’God-Slayer’s Blade.’ It carries the weight of the Architect you erased.”

Kai grabbed the hilt. The moment his fingers touched the obsidian metal, his Screen Time meter reappeared, but the numbers were different.

[Current Screen Time: 1100 Hours.]

[New Objective: Infiltrate ’The Path of the Immortal Sovereign.’]

”Wait,” Kai said, looking at the Auditor. ”What happens to you if we leave?”

”I’ll be audited,” the Auditor said with a thin smile. ”But don’t worry about me. I’ve always wanted to see what a ’Rebellion’ looks like in a world of immortals.”

The ground beneath them began to crumble. The village vanished. The green field turned into a swirling storm of white and black ink.

”Hold on to each other!” Kai shouted, grabbing Clara and Leo.

The vortex swallowed them.

The transition was violent. Kai felt his very atoms being rearranged to fit a new set of laws. He felt ’Qi’ rushing into his lungs, a thick, heavy energy that burned like fire. He felt the weight of a thousand years of history being forced into his mind.

[Alert: Genre Shift in Progress...]

[Current Genre: Cultivation / Xianxia.]

[Warning: You are currently ’Unranked’ in the new world.]

Kai opened his eyes.

He was no longer in a field. He was standing on a massive, floating stone platform surrounded by thousands of young men and women in white robes. They were all kneeling, their heads bowed toward a massive golden throne in the sky.

On the throne sat a young man with long, black hair and eyes that held the power of the stars. He looked down at the crowd with a disdain that was absolute.

”The Sect Entrance Exam has begun,” the young man’s voice boomed, shaking the very foundations of the mountain. ”Only those with a ’Heavenly Root’ may proceed. The rest... are trash.”

Kai looked at his hands. He was wearing the same white robe as the others. He looked at Leo and Clara, who were kneeling beside him, their faces pale with shock.

[New Role Assigned: Outer Disciple #9999 (Cannon Fodder).]

[Current Objective: Survive the ’Trash Cleaning’ Event.]

Kai looked up at the man on the throne. His Script Insight flickered to life.

[Target: Long Chen - The Heavenly Chosen One.]

[Level: ??? (Immortal Realm)]

[Role: The One who Kills the Trash.]

Kai gripped the obsidian hilt hidden beneath his robe. A dark, predatory smile spread across his face.

”Back to being trash, huh?” Kai whispered. ”Let’s see how the ’Heavenly Chosen’ likes it when the trash starts talking back.”

[Audience Reaction: EXPLOSIVE! ”CULTIVATION ARC?!” / ”HE’S AN OUTER DISCIPLE!” / ”KILL THE YOUNG MASTER!”]

The show was no longer on hiatus. Act Two had just begun.
