Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

Arthur Thorne stood in the center of the vault, his original body humming with a power that the shell of Kai could never have contained. The black suit he wore was more than just clothing; it was a weave of nanites and haptic sensors, a direct interface with the tower’s infrastructure. He flexed his fingers, feeling the seamless flow of data through his nervous system. For the first time in three years, he wasn’t fighting against the world’s physics. He was the physics.

On the floor, the body of the boy named Kai lay like a discarded toy. It was pale, cooling, and utterly empty.

”You killed him,” Leo whispered, his voice cracking. He was kneeling beside the empty shell, his hands hovering over Kai’s chest as if he could somehow pull the soul back into the meat. ”He was right there... he was breathing... and you just... you just stepped out of him like he was a suit of clothes.”

”He was a suit of clothes, Leo,” Arthur said, his voice resonant and cold. He didn’t look down. His gaze was fixed on the holographic displays that were beginning to bloom in the air around him, triggered by his biometric presence. ”I told you, Kai was a blank asset. A placeholder. He didn’t have a history before I arrived, and he wouldn’t have had a future after I left. I didn’t kill a person; I closed a session.”

”You’re lying!” Clara shouted. She was standing ten feet away, her jagged metal shard pointed at Arthur’s heart. Her eyes were red with fury and grief. ”I saw him smile! I saw him bleed! You’re just telling yourself these lies so you can feel like a god instead of a murderer!”

”Believe what you want, Clara,” Arthur said, swiping his hand through a holographic window. A stream of red code was cascading down the wall—the Rebrand Patch. ”But while you’re mourning a ghost, the Developers are currently zeroing out the memory addresses of every person you’ve ever known. If I don’t stop this upload in the next five minutes, ’Silver-Haired Maiden’ and ’Orphaned Survivor’ won’t just be roles. They’ll be deleted files.”

”Then let them delete us!” Clara screamed, stepping forward. ”I’d rather be deleted than be a puppet in your ’masterpiece’!”

Arthur turned to her, and for a second, the orange fire in his eyes dimmed. ”You think I don’t care? You think this was easy? I spent three years in that shell. I felt every lash of the overseer’s whip. I felt the hunger, the cold, and the fear. I didn’t just use Kai; I became him. But Kai couldn’t stop Marcus. Kai couldn’t reach the Root. Only Arthur Thorne can do that.”

He turned back to the terminal, his fingers moving with a speed that was a blur to the human eye. ”I’m opening the path to the Source Code. It’s in the penthouse, three floors up. The ’Developers’ aren’t gods, Clara. They’re just men in expensive chairs who think they can play with souls because they have the admin password.”

Suddenly, the lights in the vault turned a deep, pulsating purple. The floor began to vibrate, and the air filled with the smell of burning ozone.

From the ceiling, four massive pillars of white light descended, solidifying into humanoid shapes. They weren’t droids or machines; they were ’Pure Assets’—beings made of raw, uncompressed code. They had no faces, only glowing blue grids where their features should have been. Each one carried a sword of white light that hummed with the frequency of a server wipe.

”The Executioners,” Arthur whispered, his expression hardening. ”The Board’s final solution for ’Internal Errors.’”

”Are they coming for us?” Leo asked, shrinking back against Kai’s body.

”They’re coming for everything,” Arthur said.

He didn’t reach for a pipe or a shard. He simply raised his hand. The orange light from his eyes spread to his fingertips, and a translucent orange shield materialized in front of them, blocking a strike from the first Executioner.

The impact sent a shockwave through the room that shattered the remaining stasis pods. Glass rained down like diamonds, but Arthur didn’t flinch.

”Clara, Leo! Get into the maintenance lift behind the vault!” Arthur commanded. ”This floor is about to become a dead zone!”

”We’re not going anywhere with you!” Clara shouted, even as she ducked to avoid a blast of white energy from a second Executioner.

”This isn’t a request!” Arthur roared. He swiped his hand downward, and the floor beneath Clara and Leo suddenly shifted, turning into a high-speed conveyor belt that dragged them toward the lift. ”I’m the Lead Architect! I control the environment! Now move!”

He slammed his fist into the ground, creating a wall of orange fire that separated him from his companions. Through the flames, he could see Clara’s face—filled with a hatred that burned brighter than the fire.

”I’ll never forgive you, Arthur!” she screamed as the lift doors slammed shut.

Arthur stood alone in the vault, surrounded by the four Executioners. The white-grid beings circled him, their swords raised in perfect unison.

”Target: Arthur Thorne,” the Executioners said, their voices a synchronized drone. ”Status: Reinstated Anomaly. Protocol: Immediate Deletion.”

”You’re using my own security subroutines against me?” Arthur laughed, a harsh, jagged sound. He reached into the air and pulled out a blade of pure, obsidian code—the true form of the God-Slayer’s Blade. ”I wrote your logic, you mindless drones. I know exactly where your recursive loops end.”

The first Executioner lunged. Arthur didn’t block. He moved through the attack, his body turning into a blur of orange static. He appeared behind the being and thrust his obsidian blade into its back.

”Return to the null,” Arthur whispered.

The Executioner didn’t bleed. It shattered into a million lines of blue code that were immediately absorbed into Arthur’s suit. He felt his power surge, his synchronization with the tower hitting 120 percent.

The other three Executioners attacked simultaneously, their white-light swords creating a web of lethal energy. Arthur danced through the storm, his movements a perfect blend of human instinct and machine precision. He was no longer just a man; he was a living virus, a corruption in the system that refused to be patched.

He cut through the second Executioner’s arm, then decapitated the third with a spinning kick that released a burst of orange static. The fourth Executioner tried to retreat, its logic processing the sudden shift in combat probability, but Arthur was faster. He grabbed the being by its faceless head and slammed it into the central server rack.

”Tell the Board,” Arthur hissed, his eyes burning like twin suns. ”I’m coming for the Source Code. And I’m bringing the delete key with me.”

He crushed the Executioner’s head, and the vault fell into a sudden, terrifying silence.

Arthur stood among the ruins of his own past, his suit glowing with the stolen energy of the system’s defenders. He looked at the lift where Clara and Leo had disappeared. He knew they hated him. He knew he had lost the only people who had ever seen him as more than a Lead Architect.

But as he walked toward the stairs that led to the penthouse, Arthur Thorne didn’t hesitate. He had a world to save, even if the world hated him for it.

He stepped onto the first stair, and the entire tower groaned as he began to rewrite the laws of the physical layer.

”Act Three,” Arthur whispered. ”The Final Patch.”
