Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The tender led Ren along the inner edge of the platform ring, with the elder following close enough to watch its gestures.

It stopped first beside the Hearthfire. The great blue flame stood on the sea, its low hum reaching Ren through the stone beneath his boots. The tender circled one hand over the water around it, then indicated the platforms and the short bridges joining them.

From the upper steps, Ren had seen the ring mostly as a landing around a fire. Walking its inner edge brought the lower doorways into view, along with the places where families kept their Lawfires close to the stone. Open water ran between the occupied platforms.

Last, it crouched above the small fires gathered near the base of the flame.

Ren stopped beside it. The young fires drifted together in the sheltered water, turning slowly beneath the blue light. Some were no larger than his hand. The tender held its palm above them and remained there while one moved beneath it.

The elder had shown him where Tidefire were born when he first came here. Now the tender stood, brought its hands together and looked between Ren and the rest of the ring.

The elder relayed its meaning.

[CONCEPT: HEARTH. WATER. HOME. TOGETHER.]

Its attention stayed on Ren while the elder translated, with one hand still extended toward the young fires below.

Ren nodded. He indicated the flame, the water, the platforms and the young fires, then swept his hand across the ring.

He could see why the tender had brought him down here. Families could pack their possessions and walk toward the arch, but this was the home they would need afterward. He had no intention of dismantling it before the transfer.

The tender watched his gesture, touched the stone beside its foot and returned along the ring. Ren followed, noting how the bridges joined the platforms and where the water remained open beneath them. When he checked the merge, he would include what he had been shown.

Not everyone was packing. He passed a Tidefire seated in its doorway, with jars still stacked against the wall behind it. Farther along, another tender crouched over a bowl beside the young fires and continued its work as Ren passed.

Those people would remain with Tide. He had told them what the merge would mean, and they were preparing for it in their own way.

Spear waited at the top of the steps with the Glassfire craftsperson and two haulers. When the elder joined them, it brought two fingers together and indicated Ren.

The question that reached him concerned the formal bond. He nodded for it to continue.

[CONCEPT: BOUND. WORLD. FEEDS. GROWTH.]

Ren confirmed it. Subjects drew support from the world through their bond, with nourishment that helped their cultivation advance. Spear would gain that connection if it chose to ask.

[CONCEPT: BOUND. CANNOT. TURN. AGAINST.]

He nodded.

[CONCEPT: YOUR. TALENT. SECRETS. CANNOT. TELL.]

Ren confirmed that carefully. The restriction concerned his talent’s secrets; it didn’t prevent a Subject from speaking about him or disagreeing with him.

[CONCEPT: OTHER. WORLD. LORD. CANNOT. TAKE.]

Another nod.

[CONCEPT: LORD. DIES. BOND. ENDS.]

He confirmed the last condition, and the elder turned to the others.

Spear listened beside the steps while the craftsperson rested one hand on its tools. A hauler interrupted the explanation of the secrets, and the elder checked the distinction with Ren again before answering. He waited until their questions were finished.

Then he opened the Subject Registry.

[SUBJECT CAPACITY: 1,500.]

Stage Six had raised the limit from a hundred. Eighteen places were occupied, including the princess; the rest were available. He closed the capacity display as Spear approached.

It stopped a step away and touched his sleeve.

Ren looked down at the contact. Spear had reached for him like that on his return after the breakthrough, checking what had changed. Now its hand rested there briefly before it withdrew, indicated its own chest and made the two-finger gesture.

Ren had grown used to finding it waiting when he returned to this sea. It knew which route he would need, or had already gone to see whether that route was still open. He had never needed a bond to ask for its help.

[SUBJECT REQUEST RECEIVED.]

[SOURCE: THE PYREBORN.]

He looked back at Spear. It had heard the terms and waited through the questions before approaching him. Since their first meeting, it had shown him safe landings, waited at entrances he couldn’t bring the others through and gone for help when he needed it.

Ren nodded and accepted.

[BONDED: 19/1,500.]

Spear lowered its hand. Its blue flame remained steady in the water below, and the familiar shape standing before Ren showed no sudden change.

The bond was there, though. Ren checked the new entry, looking for confirmation that the connection had settled.

[NAME: TARIN.]

For a moment, Ren kept the entry open. He had named the guide for the weapon it carried because he hadn’t known what else to call it. Through all the journeys since, he had learned its habits without learning this much about it.

He looked up.

”Tarin.”

Spear turned its head toward him and held his gaze. Then a movement below drew its attention: a family waited beside its Lawfire with bundles gathered at the foot of the steps.

Ren glanced toward them, and Spear went down to help.

The elder turned to the craftsperson and offered the belonging gesture as a question.

It shook its head, tapped the tools across its chest and pointed toward the road. Then it checked the sling’s fastening, tightened a strap and returned to the household whose load it had been arranging.

Ren let the registry close. The craftsperson had heard the same terms, and its answer was clear enough.

— • —

The Nightfire speaker was leaving Tide with two companions.

Ren saw them on the lowest bridge, heading back toward their own Hearth. The speaker kept its head turned along the route. None approached him before departing.

The other two went toward the groups gathering for the road to the arch. They paused near a guide, watching it divide the loads between two haulers, then continued after the first family.

Ren followed their movement until the steps obscured them. Their objection hadn’t changed his decision. Whether they waited at their Hearth or watched from the ledge was up to them.

He returned to Ward, with Balm tending its tail and Keep secure between its shoulders. The elder accompanied them in its Lawfire.

The road was busier now. They passed a Steamfire carrying two jars, a family with a Cinder sheltered close to an adult’s chest, and a guide waiting at the bend until the narrow stretch cleared. Ren kept Ward clear of the passage.

The guide held a hand out until the last bundle reached the wider rock. Below it, the family’s Lawfires followed through the remaining water, close enough together that their light overlapped. Ren watched them clear the bend before Ward moved into the passage.

Behind them, another group emerged around the previous island. The guides were keeping the traffic moving without needing him to direct each crossing.

— • —

Hourfire stood where the road widened onto the arch’s ledge.

Ren recognized the grey-white figure from the water. Away from the basin, with its body upright, it looked taller than he remembered. Its Heartflame showed faintly inside its chest, and its Lawfire rested in the sheltered water beside the rock.

It had come from the basin while preparations continued at Tide. Ren hadn’t witnessed the journey, but now it looked back along the route it had traveled before turning toward the grey light.

He stepped ashore. The elder approached the waiting guide and went over the terms with a family preparing to cross. Hourfire remained apart, listening when the guide asked a question and watching Ren’s answer.

The family brought its bundles forward, and Ren permitted it through.

One adult went first, then turned within the opening to receive a bundle from the next. A Cinder followed in a tender’s arms. Riptide lifted their accompanying Lawfires level with the arch on a shallow sheet, and Ren allowed those through as well.

The Stillfire keeper came forward behind the family.

It paused at the opening long enough for Ren to acknowledge it, then stepped into the light with its hands at its sides. Its Lawfire followed, and the guide crossed last.

Hourfire watched until the grey light filled the entrance again.

Ren waited nearby. The witness could examine the route and the opening from here, but it couldn’t see the beach beyond. Its attention remained on the place where the group had disappeared.

When the guide returned with its Lawfire, Hourfire turned toward it.

The guide indicated the arch and swept its hands wide for the water, then held one above its own flame. The elder relayed its account without adding anything to what it had observed: the family had reached the shore, and their fires were holding there.

Hourfire listened, then walked to a clear place on the ledge and lowered itself onto the rock. It folded its hands in its lap.

[CONCEPT: WAIT. HERE.]

The elder checked whether it intended to remain on this side until the merge. Hourfire confirmed it, and Ren nodded. It had inspected the road and heard from someone who had crossed; it would arrive with the fragment.

The two Nightfire reached the ledge before Ren left. They stopped near the next waiting family, watching its members gather their things. Neither joined the line.

Ren indicated the arch to the elder, then himself. The elder looked toward the families and back at him, checking that he meant to return home for the final preparations. He confirmed it.

The guides could bring people as far as the ledge while he was away. Those still waiting could cross when he next permitted them or remain where they were until the merge.

He stepped through alone.

— • —

The northern beach was warm beneath his boots. Ren walked past the flower field toward the Worldroot, easing his left shoulder as he went.

He could hear the water moving before he reached the pocket. Loom maintained a gentle current through the roots, and Wick remained near the bank. Between them, the small gold body rested against the wood with its hands loose beside it.

”She’s been resting, Ren.”

He knelt and dipped his fingertips into the water. It was still warm. Her shoulder remained formed, with the other colors gathered beneath the gold. He watched for a moment, then withdrew his hand without disturbing her.

’Where will the fragment go when I authorize the merge?’

[MERGE SCOPE: ENTIRE WORLD FRAGMENT.]

[DESTINATION: EXPANDED REGION ADJOINING THE EXISTING SEA.]

[EXISTING INHABITED REGIONS: PRESERVED.]

Ren looked toward the silver water beyond the roots. The incoming region would have room of its own as his world expanded. The people already here would keep their homes, including the drowned city preserved beneath the sea.

He thought of Tide’s ring and the tender crouched above the young fires.

’The settlements coming with it—their structures and the water supporting their Hearthfires. Will those stay together?’

[INCOMING SETTLEMENTS AND CONNECTED HEARTH SUPPORTS: PRESERVED.]

That answered what the tender had shown him. Tide could arrive with its platforms, its water and its Hearth still joined. The merge wouldn’t require its people to break apart the home they meant to keep.

Ren turned back to the pocket.

’And the core? What happens to her when you integrate the world?’

[WORLD STRUCTURE: INTEGRATED.]

[LIVING CORE: RETAINED AT THE WORLDROOT.]

[IDENTITY AND CONSCIOUSNESS: PRESERVED.]

Her fingers rested against the root, unfinished but steady. The Worldroot would integrate the fragment’s structure while keeping her alive and distinct. She wouldn’t disappear into the tree as the sphere of clear water had.

’Will she still have the support she needs?’

[STABILIZATION: CONTINUES.]

[MATURATION: UNCHANGED.]

He still had to find compatible nurturing material. The merge would neither complete her development nor interrupt the support keeping her stable.

Ren rose and looked across his sea. When the water world had come home, its ocean, city and inhabitants had arrived together. He remembered the pod entering the new water and the city lamps lighting beneath them. This time he already had a populated world to protect, and he had checked what the next arrival would do to it.

On the far side of the arch, the guides were bringing families to the ledge. Tide’s tenders were staying with their fire. The Bloom keepers would remain on their island, and Hourfire sat waiting on the rock. Some of the Nightfire were still angry. None of those answers required another round of asking.

He had explained the merge and given them time to prepare while he confirmed what he needed. The princess was stable, the existing settlements would be preserved, and the incoming Hearths could remain on their own ground.

The grey tree was still approaching. It had already consumed the warring land, and Ren needed his world stronger before it reached him. He rested his left hand against the Worldroot, feeling the warmth through the bark.

’Begin the merge.’

[MERGE: AUTHORIZED.]
