Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Chapter 257: Black Water

He walked down to the northern shore in the dark — and the arch was awake.

For as long as the sea had been home, the grey arch on the north beach — the door his world opened onto dying worlds, big enough to walk a house through — had stayed dark and quiet, like a gate with nothing behind it. Tonight, though, there was light inside. Not much, just a grey glow moving slowly through the stone, like someone building it one layer at a time.

The Fifteen were all in the shallows, facing it. Nobody had told them to, but there they were.

Ren stopped at the waterline and let the System do its thing.

[PASSAGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION. SURVEY IN PROGRESS.]

[FRAGMENT: A BLACK VOLCANIC OCEAN. ISLANDS: VOLCANOES. FIRES ON THE WATER — MANY KINDS.]

[EACH KIND OF FIRE CARRIES A DIFFERENT LAW.]

[DOMINANT LIFE: FIRE SPIRITS. THEY LIVE INSIDE THE FIRES. INSIDE, THEY CANNOT BE REACHED. OUTSIDE, THEY CAN DIE.]

[THE STRONGEST PRESENCE: NOT MEASURED. IT IS NOT AWAKE.]

[DANGER TO HOST: SEVERE TO EXTREME.]

He read the panels slowly, the same way he did for every survey, taking each line as a fact and not a feeling. A black sea. Volcano islands. Fires floating on the water, every one made of a different law, and things living inside them that you could only kill once they crawled out.

”The Burning Sea,” he said to the air. It fit. He left it at that.

Then the System added the part that actually mattered.

[OUROBOROS: THIS FRAGMENT PERMITS ONE REVIVAL PER DAY.]

[THE FRAGMENT IS STABLE. STABILITY LIMITS THE ALLOWANCE.]

Ren read that one twice.

The sunken world had given him room to mess up. This one didn’t. It was stable enough to hold volcanoes, and stability meant a smaller allowance.

One revival a day.

’So don’t die twice,’ he thought.

Something hummed in his storage.

He pulled it out to check. The relic rack — the five sealed pieces the sunken world’s builders left with their weapon, planar-locked and mysterious since the day he took them — was vibrating against his palm. Faintly, like a glass someone tapped in another room. It had never done that before. It had sat silent through the Meridian, the return, the duel, all of it.

[RELIC RACK: RESPONDING. FUNCTION: STILL UNKNOWN. ANALYSIS: QUEUED.]

Water, hearing about fire. That was all he could figure.

He put the rack away and stood a while longer with the sea at his feet, watching the grey light build inside the arch, and then he went to bed; whatever was on the other side had waited this long, and it could wait until he’d told his family he was heading out.

— • —

He told them at dinner, just like last time.

The family knew the shape of it by now.

Harbor, they called it. He’d given it that name when he first had to explain a sea that hadn’t been there before: his talent reaching out to dead worlds, far in the deep, and bringing home what was left of them.

They knew that much, and they’d learned which questions about the rest were better left alone.

”Another one,” Ren said, between bread and soup. ”Two, three weeks.”

Nobody dropped their fork.

That was new.

”Hotter or colder than the last one?” Yuelan asked.

”Hotter.”

”Bring me something.”

”Don’t name a rock after me this time,” Cassian said from the slate. ”Name a volcano. I’ve earned a volcano.”

Iris didn’t say anything; she looked at him once across the table, then went back to her food. Under the table, Lyra’s foot found his and stayed there.

Selene wasn’t at dinner; she had a class, and being Stage Five hadn’t changed her schedule.

Kaelen’s chair was empty.

Ren looked at it the way he always did now — once, then not again.

— • —

He took Lyra and Iris into the field afterward, because rule one didn’t care how tired he was.

He gave them the true shape of the place, plain and simple.

A black ocean on fire.

The fires were made of laws, a different one for every kind. Things lived inside the fires, came out to hunt, and you could only kill them once they were out. The pack would go with him, once he knew it was safe enough.

”Once you know,” Iris said. ”So you go first.”

”I go first.”

”How dangerous? In your own words. Not a danger rating.”

He thought about it, because she asked for his words and would know if he gave her someone else’s.

”The most since the sea.”

Iris took that and put it wherever she put things.

Lyra didn’t say then come back, because she’d already said it, right here, and she wasn’t someone who repeated herself.

She just said, ”Okay,” and held on a second longer than usual, and that was that.

— • —

The pack was still in the shallows when he came down at moonrise, still facing the arch.

He told them at the waterline, just like he told everyone else — the truth, straight.

”It’s a fire world. The water’s black and it’s burning. The things in it live inside the fires, and they can only be killed when they come out.” He looked down the line. ”I go in first. Alone. If it’s what I think, I’ll come back for you. If it’s worse, I’ll come back and tell you why not.”

Ward surfaced first.

He always surfaced first — the scarred grey whale who’d held Ren’s lane in the deep, the first to say yes — and he kept one eye above the water on Ren, not going back under.

Bolt was already circling, since Bolt couldn’t hear a plan without moving.

Riptide arrived as a current against Ren’s ankles, cold and then gone.

Snap came sideways through the surf and fired a claw-shot straight at the moon, which was the closest thing a cellarclaw had to a salute.

Keep’s spore landed on Ren’s sleeve like a snowflake with somewhere to be. The quiet channel opened in his head — the hive of one, saying it was listening.

Ren looked at the little pale plant in its cradle of wet sand.

”We’ll find out if you can hear me in there,” he told it. ”Realms couldn’t carry you. This isn’t a realm. Nobody knows yet.”

Knock bumped his shoulder twice, the calf’s way of saying anything, and sang three notes. Every creature in the water stood a little taller, and so did Ren, whether he meant to or not.

”Wait for my word,” he said. ”That’s the job tonight.”

Then he went to pack.

— • —

He packed cold.

If the place was fire, he’d bring the sea.

Storage took water without a fight — he drew it straight from the shallows in quantities that would’ve emptied a town’s cistern, and the sea didn’t even notice. He took a bag of seeds from his mother’s field, because flowers seeded in water had worked once before, in a deep he thought would kill him.

He took nothing that burned.

His armor didn’t need packing. The seed-torc was already at his collar, waiting for a reason to bloom.

Deepsnap was forbidden on campus.

This wasn’t campus.

He didn’t take the notebook.

Some things stayed home.

— • —

The tree was lit when he got back, not root to crown, just its ordinary evening glow, and Kaia was awake.

”One a day, Ren,” she said. Sweet as ever. ”I read it too.”

”I know.”

”I’m telling you so you know I know.”

He sat down against the bark.

The leaves were very still.

”Goodnight,” she said, and the light stayed exactly as bright as it was, and didn’t dim once all night.

— • —

He went at dawn, alone.

The Fifteen lined the shallows on both sides of his path, and none of them followed past the waterline because he’d told them not to, and because a door was a door.

The grey glow inside the stone had stopped moving sometime during the night. Whatever the passage had been doing, it was done.

Ren stepped up to it.

Heat came through first — not the heat of a fire, but the heat of a whole place, dry and enormous, pushing through the arch into the cool morning air until the flowers behind him leaned away from it.

Then the passage cleared, and he was looking through his own front door into somewhere else.

Black water.

Flat, dark, and endless under a sky the color of old iron.

Islands stood up out of it in cones, smoke curling off their tops.

And on the water, all the way out to where the eye gave up, small fires floated — red ones, white ones, one far off that was blue, and others in colors he had never seen fire be.

The water was burning.
