Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Yueying didn’t ask what had happened at midnight. She just held the slate with that new line etched into it and waited; Ren gave her the only part that was his to give.

”The record updated at midnight. Something reached me, too — through the blood. That’s all I can tell you.”

She gave a single nod, as if he’d just verified a date. ”Then I’ll keep watching the number.”

She sent that line to her house within the hour. That was how she managed things this big — one copy with her, one in the Azure archive, so if it shifted again, two sets of eyes would catch it. Ren watched her thumb the slate dark and slide it into her sleeve, and neither of them dared say the word thirteen, or fourteen, or even hinted at what lay past it.

He had another conversation to have; he’d promised it.

He brought Lyra and Iris through at dusk.

Only he could open the door into his own world, and he did it plainly — one hand each, one step, and then the three of them stood amidst his mother’s flowers with the sea at their backs and the Worldroot towering above. The tree looked like itself again. Whatever it had done last night, it stopped, and its leaves gave off that familiar, soft evening glow.

He sat down. They followed, Lyra on one side, Iris on the other, just like at the table.

”Okay,” Ren said. ”Rule one.”

It was the first of Iris’s three rules, born on the night in this very field when they stopped pretending: nothing that matters gets hidden from the others. Iris folded her hands.

”Go on.”

”My ancestor. Aldric. He didn’t die.” Ren kept his gaze on the flowers while he spoke; it was easier than looking at them. ”He’s alive. He’s somewhere far away, holding a door shut for centuries. Behind it is a thing that wants out. It’s the thing in Yueying’s record — the one with the name.”

”The seal,” Iris said.

”He’s the seal. Him. His body. His heartbeat is the lock.” Ren rubbed his right shoulder without thinking. ”Last night he sent a message. Not a new one; he put it in the blood when he shut the door, for whoever came after, and it reached me last night. I heard the whole thing.”

Lyra had gone completely still. ”What did he say?”

”A lot.” Ren picked three things — the three he’d been turning over all day. ”He said, ’I am not coming back.’ He said, ’Do not come until you can arrive.’ And at the end, ’Hold yours.’”

”Arrive where?” Iris asked.

”There’s a road to him. It’s in the blood, too. It carries you down the line to where he is.” Ren let out a breath. ”But it needs Stage Seven. Below Seven, he said, you don’t get there. You just don’t arrive.”

”Seven,” Lyra repeated.

”Two stages. I know.”

He explained the rest plainly. A message, a road, a bar on the road. A thing behind a door that hated the man holding it, and would hate Ren’s name once it learned it. He didn’t say which house had opened that door once — that wasn’t his to tell. He didn’t say what he’d been before this life, or what the brackets were, or who lived in the tree behind them. He told himself those weren’t rule one. They were the other kind of secret, the ones that could hurt more people by being spoken than by being kept, so they stayed where they always stayed.

Iris let a few seconds drift by, then asked just one question.

”Does the Alliance know you know?”

”They know something woke,” Ren said. ”Not what. The General felt it. He asked me once, straight, and I told him it was my blood and my business, so he put a man on a bench to watch me.”

”The man with the tea.”

”The man with the tea.”

Iris nodded slowly, filing it away. ”Then we never say anything that sounds like this,” she said. ”Ever. Not on a slate, in the chat, or a hallway. Nothing.”

”Agreed.”

Lyra hadn’t asked a thing yet. She was looking at him with the look she reserved for hard truths — not turning away, just looking straight at them.

”When you go,” she said. ”Can we come?”

”It only carries me.” He said it as gently as he could. ”It’s blood. Mine. It doesn’t take passengers.”

Lyra didn’t hesitate at all.

”Then come back.”

She took his hand easily, like that first night in the field, as if it had always been hers to hold. Iris looked at their joined hands, then placed her own on top, and for a while, nobody said a word — and that was fine.

”He left me something else,” Ren said, eventually.

”Money?” Iris asked.

”An art. His art. The thing he’s using right now to hold the door.” He stood up, stepping out onto the open grass. ”The first part is just a stance. I want to see if it works when it isn’t him doing it.”

He set his feet.

It came just like last night — heels down, weight low, and then the feeling under his boots of roots sinking into the earth, tightening their grip. Not his roots. The world’s. For as long as he stood like that, he and the field were one.

”Push me,” he said.

Iris stood, walked over, and pressed one hand flat against his chest, like she was checking a wall for damp. She pushed.

Nothing happened.

She used both hands, leaning her whole weight in — and for a late Seedling, that wasn’t a small amount of weight. Ren felt the push arrive, traveling straight down through his legs into the ground, and the earth took it the way a hill takes the wind.

Iris stopped. She looked down. Then she crouched to check the grass around his boots, because Iris checked everything, but the grass hadn’t even bent.

”Huh,” she said.

”Can I?” Lyra asked, already up.

She pushed with both hands, laughed when he didn’t budge, then pushed again and laughed some more.

Ren let the stance go and stood normally, and the field was just a field once more.

”It’s called Holdfast,” he said. ”Sea plants have it. It’s the part that grips the rock.”

”That’s the first part?” Iris asked.

”That’s the first part.”

Nobody asked about the last part. He’d explained what the man at the far end was doing with it, and they both understood.

He walked them back through and stood at the edge of his world once they were gone.

”You told them well,” Kaia said. Her voice drifted from the leaves, soft and pleased.

”Thanks.”

A pause.

”You left out the part where you died seventeen times.”

”That’s not what rule one is for.”

”Mm.”

The path home from the flower field, if he exited on the campus side, went past the seclusion hall.

Selene had ducked behind its door while Ren was out in the sunken sea, aiming for Stage Five, and it hadn’t opened since. Two offerings sat on the threshold — the arena badge Yuelan had left, and a second one from after the sea. And under the bottom edge of the door, just as Yuelan kept mentioning at dinner, there was a sliver of light. A lamp, lit inside.

Yuelan was sitting on the steps.

She sat sideways, back to the wall, head turned toward the door; she put a finger to her lips before Ren could even say hello. He stopped. He listened.

Through the door, low and steady, came a voice.

”One. Two. Three. Four.”

A breath.

”One. Two. Three. Four.”

He knew the count. Everyone in the cohort did. It was the breathing anchor — the last lesson Selene gave them before the World Creation night, the thing she taught them to hold when the test tried to pull them apart. She’d walked into this room to take that test herself. Now the lesson was echoing out through the door, in her voice, at her pace.

”How long has she been —”

”Since I got here,” Yuelan whispered. ”I bowed to the door. Like always. And it started talking.”

Ren sat down next to her.

He wasn’t the first. Iris was there, two steps down, with two hot cups, handing one to Yuelan without a word. Lyra was there, too. Yueying, with her slate dark in her lap for once. Vesper and Eira had come up together, Vesper’s notebook closed on her knee, something Ren had almost never seen. Cassian’s slate leaned against the top step, propped on someone’s shoe, with Cassian’s face showing and the treatment wing’s light behind him.

”I’d have brought snacks,” Cassian said quietly from the slate, ”if anyone had told me.”

”Nobody told anyone,” Yuelan said.

”That’s what I’m saying.”

Ren looked down the row. ”Who sent the message?”

”Nobody,” Yuelan said. ”That’s the thing.”

Across the way, on his bench with nowhere to be, the man with the tea lifted his cup an inch, took a sip, and went back to watching.

There was a gap on the step between Yuelan and Lyra, about one person wide. Nobody sat in it.

”One. Two. Three. Four.”

Eight on the step, if you counted the slate. Nine, if you counted the space nobody sat in. Behind the door, the counting went on.

Nobody went home.
