Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

His hands still ached when he stepped back through the arch.

Balm had closed the splits over his knuckles, leaving tight pink skin that pulled whenever he bent his fingers. Ren made a slow fist on the shelf and opened it again before climbing down to Spear’s raft.

The courier waited beside them, then led the way to Tide. Ren collected Ward with Keep and Snap; the others remained at the Hearth. The Stillfire keeper sat facing the sea with its hands in its lap, much as it had during their last exchange.

They passed the split island and the green Hearth with its damaged wall before reaching a fork between two low islands. The courier stopped there and pointed along the left branch.

It waited until Spear turned the raft, then headed back toward Tide in short bursts.

Beyond the fork, the floating fires grew sparse. A red flame burned beside a flat landing rock, and farther on, the chop eased among low stone rims rising from the water.

Ren pointed toward the landing. Spear brought the raft alongside, and he turned to Ward.

”Wait here. If I go down, Ward leads. Back to Tide with Spear. Don’t wait for me.”

Ward settled beside the rock with Keep riding between his shoulders. Snap climbed onto the stone, while Spear rose from the water after Ren stepped off the raft.

He touched the spore on his sleeve and waited for a response through the link. Keep was close enough that it came promptly, though Ren knew it would take longer once he moved farther in.

The landing and the route back to the fork were clear. He left them there and walked toward the first basin.

Rings of black stone lay one inside another, each holding a separate pool. Their water stood at slightly different levels behind continuous stone lips. Small waves washed the polished edges, leaving wet bands above the surface.

Ren followed the first rim until it approached the next, then stepped down into knee-deep water. The bottom was visible beneath his boots. He crossed the shallow gap and climbed onto the next lip, placing his palms carefully so he didn’t pull too hard on the new skin.

The crossings grew easier once he knew where to look. He followed the lower edges, stepping through the water where the rims came close and keeping away from the deeper centers.

Ash had collected in sheltered grooves. A few grains shifted when his boot brushed near them, then settled again. Beside his foot, a small wave washed over a rounded edge and drained back into the basin.

The fire in the innermost pool was grey-white.

It burned low on the water, its surface steady enough that Ren stopped to watch for a flicker. Little warmth reached him when he stepped onto the last rim.

A Pyreborn sat beside it, facing the basin. Its grey-white stone body was smooth, with a pale Heartflame inside its chest and both hands resting in its lap. The Lawfire lay close to the rim below it.

[RACE: PYREBORN.]

[HEARTFLAME: HOURFIRE.]

[HEARTFLAME GRADE: CROWNFIRE.]

[LAW COMPOSITION: FIRE / TIME.]

[DANGER TO HOST: EXTREME.]

Ren stopped at the last line. Both Furnace-grade enemies had read SEVERE. This was higher, although the seated figure had yet to turn toward him.

He stayed where he was. After a while, the witness looked up and began speaking, leaving long gaps between the sounds.

[CONCEPT: TRAVELERS. SPOKE.]

[CONCEPT: GATE. OPEN.]

[CONCEPT: CLEFT. EMPTY.]

[CONCEPT: HEARTH. STANDS.]

Ren glanced back along the basins. Someone had brought word of the passages and the Hearth before he arrived. He couldn’t tell who, or how much they had said.

The witness lifted a hand and indicated a place on the opposite rim.

[CONCEPT: SIT.]

Ren followed the curve of the stone and lowered himself onto the offered place. His shoulders protested as he braced himself, so he shifted until he could sit without leaning on his hands.

Across the water, the witness returned its attention to the basin.

Ren watched the grey-white flame for a change he could follow.

Quickfire had moved in bursts. Stillfire’s working had faltered under the falling stone, and Agefire had gathered itself between attacks. Each had given him something distinct to observe, a change with a beginning and an end.

He waited for the witness’s chest coal to brighten, or for its Lawfire to draw inward before an effort. Neither happened. The pale coal remained visible through the stone, and the flame continued burning beside the rim.

He tried counting an interval, but couldn’t find a change to measure it against. After a few attempts he stopped and looked between the body and its fire, wondering whether he was watching the wrong part.

A questioning impression reached him through Keep: Ward, waiting at the landing, uncertain whether to approach.

Ren sent back wait. The acknowledgment came after a delay, and he settled again.

His hands had begun aching where they rested against his knees. He turned them palm-up and eased his fingers apart. The skin over the knuckles was still pink, with the lines of the old splits visible through it.

He studied one while waiting for the discomfort to pass. Balm had closed the wound, but his hand hadn’t immediately returned to what it was before. He flexed it gently, then laid it down again.

The witness raised one finger toward the water beside its knee.

[CONCEPT: WATCH.]

Ren followed the gesture to the small wave washing the rim.

It reached the stone and withdrew. The next came a little higher, wetting a band above the first. Another broke unevenly around a shallow notch and left water running through it after the rest had drawn back.

He watched them separately at first, following each arrival until it disappeared. Gradually his attention stayed on the notch while the water continued passing through it.

Its edges were rounded smooth. Water followed the same hollow repeatedly, sometimes filling it, sometimes barely reaching the bottom. Ren couldn’t see the stone wearing away, but he could see where it had worn.

He shifted closer to look at the curve below the surface. Holt’s old masters, sitting and watching things change, came back to him as he waited for another wave.

Across the basin, the witness sat with its hands in its lap. Ren had been looking for a technique it would begin and finish for him. Instead, it had directed him toward something already happening, which continued while his attention wandered and returned.

He thought briefly of Aldric’s vigil at the sealed door. He had known how long his ancestor had held it without being able to imagine living through that much waiting.

The wave reached the notch again. Ren watched it drain, then stayed with the stone until the next one came.

By the time Ward’s next question reached him, hunger had settled into a persistent ache and one of his legs was stiff beneath him. The impression carried more restlessness than before.

Ren sent wait again and shifted his foot. Ash stirred in the groove beside his heel. He straightened his leg slowly, waiting for the pins and needles to ease before folding it back.

There was still nothing he could name as a new working, and no panel announcing that he had understood. He kept watching without knowing how long the witness intended him to stay.

Then the grey-white figure stood.

Ren looked up as it unfolded from the rim, taller than it had seemed while seated. It stepped down into the shallow water and crossed toward him, sending small ripples against the polished stone.

It stopped a step below his seat and touched its chest over the pale coal. Then it extended one hand, palm up.

[CONCEPT: SHOW.]

[CONCEPT: LEARN.]

[WARNING: DIRECT CONTACT IS LIKELY FATAL TO THE HOST.]

[REVIVALS REMAINING TODAY: 1.]

Ren read the warning, then the allowance beneath it. He still had the revival he had carried through the cleft and the Agefire fight.

The witness waited with its hand extended. Ren looked from the smooth palm to the coal inside its chest. Nothing was being removed or offered for him to carry away. It was asking him to make contact.

He read the warning once more. Likely fatal. He couldn’t tell what the witness intended him to experience, or whether he would understand any of it before the exposure killed him.

The Embers and inscribed blocks had given him workings he could follow under the Worldroot. He had learned what each source contained and still come here with a question he couldn’t answer. The witness had listened to the travelers, offered him a seat and let him watch. Now it was offering to show him more directly. Ren looked at the waiting hand, then back at the single revival listed beneath the warning.

Its hand remained open, within reach if he chose to stand.

Ren touched the spore on his sleeve and sent one last wait. Ward already had the instructions for what to do if he fell. He waited for the acknowledgment before moving.

Then he unfolded his legs and stood, letting them take his weight before lifting his right hand. The skin pulled across his knuckles as he opened his fingers.

Their hands touched.
