Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Ren slept at home and ate before returning to the Burning Sea. The ache in his legs had eased enough that he could walk down to the beach without feeling every step.

At the waterline, he checked his allowance.

[REVIVALS REMAINING TODAY: 1.]

Spear and the courier were waiting below the shelf when he crossed. The courier pointed toward the sea, then waited while Spear raised the raft beneath his boots.

They stopped at Tide first.

The guard sat beside its pile of stones while Ren lifted Balm from its chest. Its water-body held together after the moss came away, and the small Heartflame remained steady. Ren watched it pick up another stone before carrying Balm over to Anvil.

The moss settled into the scorched crack along the shell. Anvil lowered itself onto the platform, keeping the damaged edge clear of the stone.

”Stay here,” Ren told them.

He took Ward with Keep, Riptide, Snap and Lantern, and called Knock down to join them. The calf followed Ward into the water while the courier returned to its flame and moved ahead of Spear’s raft.

— • —

Beyond the old gate, the route brought them to a black island split by a cleft. Water ran between its walls and disappeared around a bend. A narrow line of footholds followed one side above the surface.

Ward approached behind the raft, but Ren held him outside. Submerged shelves narrowed the water below the footholds; the whale would have little room to turn, and carrying people on his back would put them nearer the low stone. Ren pointed toward the open water beside the entrance, where arrivals could gather.

Slabs had broken away from the cliff overhead. They hung at different angles above the lane, with ash drifting between them. Ren watched one slab until its lower edge moved against a crack in the wall behind it.

It was still falling, slowly enough that he could have missed the movement.

The ash descended with it until it reached an invisible boundary. Below that line, the flakes fell normally toward the water. The footholds and the sea beneath them lay outside the slowing.

Ren looked along the lowest edges of the stone. Anything that crossed that boundary would fall onto the passage.

The keeper stood on a ledge just inside the entrance, both arms raised. Its pale body leaned slightly toward the wall, and the coal in its chest shuddered as it shifted from one foothold to another. Beside it, its Lawfire burned so slowly that the tips barely changed shape.

The slabs continued their gradual descent while it moved.

[RACE: PYREBORN.]

[HEARTFLAME: STILLFIRE.]

[HEARTFLAME GRADE: PYRE.]

[LAW COMPOSITION: FIRE / TIME.]

[DANGER TO HOST: HIGH.]

Ren recognized the raised hands from the courier’s warning. He followed their angle toward marks running along the entrance wall.

Old slag-glass blocks were set into the rock there. Their inscriptions extended around a thick stone shoulder onto a sheltered outer shelf, where a faint distortion followed the cuts in the glass.

[INSCRIBED SUPPORT: STILLFIRE WORKING.]

[MATERIAL: FIRE / TIME.]

The keeper adjusted its hands, and the distortion shifted along the marks toward the cleft. Ren watched the connection before it began speaking.

[CONCEPT: HOLD.]

[CONCEPT: PEOPLE. CROSS.]

[CONCEPT: FALL. SOON.]

He pointed beyond the bend, then toward Ward waiting outside. After a pause, he indicated the inscribed blocks and touched his own chest.

The keeper glanced at him. It gestured along the occupied passage before turning one raised hand toward the working.

[CONCEPT: AFTER. EMPTY.]

[CONCEPT: YOURS.]

[CONCEPT: NOT. BEFORE.]

Ren nodded and lowered his hand. The blocks would stay where they were until everyone had crossed.

— • —

He went through first with the courier and Snap. Keep’s spore clung to his sleeve, and he checked it before stepping onto the footholds.

The lane narrowed around the bend. Three recesses lay beneath intact rock, each with enough ledge for a family and sheltered water below for their Lawfires. Between them, the footing passed directly beneath the broken cliff.

Ren stopped at the bend, where a broad slab hung lowest. He pointed to the courier, then back toward Knock at the entrance.

The courier returned, and the calf’s three-note phrase echoed through the cleft. The walls doubled the sound, but Ren could distinguish the original notes. He waited for the echoes to fade before beckoning the courier back.

They checked the final recess and continued toward the Hearth side.

Behind them, the keeper moved along the footholds with its hands still raised. It stopped beneath the intact overhang before the bend, its Lawfire drifting beside the ledge. From there it could watch the lowest stone, although the turn hid the next stretch from view.

The Hearth stood in a bowl of rock beyond the cleft. Its fire burned low among the platforms, where adults waited with jars and Cinders. Their Lawfires gathered beneath the stonework.

Ren watched a Steamfire collect its jar and approach the entrance. He held up a hand, pointed toward the recess and waited until the courier had shown it where to stop.

They practiced the first hand signal while the group was still outside the falling stone. Then Ren sent the courier back to the keeper.

The Steamfire watched him touch the spore on his sleeve. It accepted a marker on its own shoulder and beckoned the rest of its group closer. Ren indicated the last traveler before repeating the arrival signal; reaching shelter alone would not be enough to send the next group after them.

— • —

Knock’s notes marked an opening, with silence between each call. A group moved to the next recess and waited there with its guide. The courier checked that both the footholds and the water below were clear before signaling the keeper to let a piece through.

Only after the stone had fallen and the water settled did it carry the next clearance to Knock.

Keep’s markers gave Ren slower reports from the travelers. He used those to hold the next group at the Hearth until the previous one was out. A late report meant a longer wait; nobody was sent beneath a slab because a message had failed to arrive.

The first group entered with the Steamfire carrying its jar. Ren watched its Lawfire follow beneath the footholds, then lost sight of both around the bend.

The notes came, followed later by the guide’s signal through Keep. Ren waited for the report that the whole group had reached the mouth before releasing the next.

Ward and Riptide received them outside, with Lantern lighting the entrance and Spear guiding the arrivals onto the sheltered shelf. Inside, the courier kept moving between the recesses and the keeper.

During the fourth crossing, Ren heard stone strike the water beyond the bend. The sound rolled through the cleft, followed by a wash against the footholds near him.

He held the waiting group back. When the echoes faded, there was still no call from Knock. The courier came into view, checked the water at the final recess and returned toward the keeper. Only then did the three notes sound.

The Hearthfire stirred behind Ren. He glanced back at the emptied platforms, then checked the people still beside him.

Two adults waited with an older Pyreborn and a Cinder. One adult supported the older one’s arm; the other held the child close. Ren beckoned them forward when Keep brought the previous group’s final report.

He followed them into the cleft, with Snap behind him.

— • —

They waited in the first recess until the courier checked the stretch ahead. Knock’s phrase reached them through the bend, and the adults started along the footholds.

Ren kept close behind the Cinder. Three strides short of the next shelter, the distortion above the lane trembled.

The lowest slab dropped abruptly before slowing again. Its edge crossed the boundary, and a fragment broke away beneath it.

Ren drove water against the adult’s back, pushing it and the child forward into the recess. He was turning after them when the fragment’s edge struck across his shoulders.

Gravebloom opened from the seed-torc at his collar. Black petals spread into the blow and burned to ash as the impact knocked him off the foothold.

He hit the water beside the falling stone with his breath gone. Snap caught his arm and hauled him beneath the overhang before he could slip farther into the lane.

Ren sat against the rock, trying to draw air. His first attempt barely worked. He stayed still until he could manage another, then lifted a hand toward the courier waiting at the edge of the shelter.

Water ran from his sleeves. He looked down at the torc, where ash clung to the wet cloth around his collar, and brushed it away with fingers that shook. Snap kept its claw near his elbow while he shifted his weight onto the ledge instead of trying to stand at once.

Knock was silent. The group remained beside him, their Lawfires gathered in the water below. The older Pyreborn had a hand on the child’s shoulder while its parent checked the small flame.

Ren planted his feet and rose with Snap’s claw beneath his arm. His shoulders hurt when he straightened, but he could move them.

He nodded to the courier. It checked the next stretch, then went ahead to carry the clearance.

When Knock’s notes returned, Ren pointed the family onward and followed them out.

— • —

Ward waited beyond the mouth. Spear helped the older traveler onto the shelf while Riptide kept the Lawfires together in the sheltered water.

Ren turned back toward the cleft.

The keeper followed along the footholds, arms raised, stopping once beneath intact rock to steady its stance. Its Lawfire stayed alongside it as the courier watched from the entrance.

Ren waited until both body and flame were outside. They moved around the stone shoulder onto the sheltered shelf, away from the mouth, and the keeper lowered its hands.

The collapse began deep inside the island. Stone struck stone, and dust rolled out across the water. A surge swept past the entrance while Riptide held the gathered flames farther along the shelf.

Ren stayed behind the rock shoulder until the noise subsided. When the dust thinned, rubble filled the visible passage.

The keeper rested with its hands against its knees before approaching the outer blocks. It checked the wall, then worked one loose and held it out to Ren.

[CONCEPT: DONE.]

[CONCEPT: YOURS.]

He helped remove the accessible blocks from the sheltered side. The distortion was gone from their marks, though the cut glass still carried a faint warmth.

The keeper checked each opening before moving to the next block. Ren followed its lead, leaving the supports nearer the ruined passage alone.

[LAW-BEARING MATERIAL: STILLFIRE WORKING.]

[CONTAINS: FIRE / TIME.]

[ENDLESS GRAFT COMPATIBLE.]

[GRAFTING UNAVAILABLE WITHIN FRAGMENT.]

Ren put them into storage. The keeper watched him finish, then drew his attention to a weathered fragment lodged beside the wall. Grey powder lay beneath it, distinct from the fresh black rubble farther away.

It lifted the fragment carefully. Loose grains fell through its fingers before it held the remaining piece toward him.

[CONCEPT: FIRE. MAKES. OLD.]

[CONCEPT: WALLS. WEAK.]

[CONCEPT: EATERS. COME. AFTER.]

Ren looked from the powder to the blocked cleft. The keeper pointed along the sea route beyond the island, then indicated the fragment again and spread its hands wide.

[CONCEPT: BIG. ONE.]

He followed the direction, holding it in mind while the keeper lowered the stone.

— • —

They took the evacuees to Tide. Ward carried those who needed it, and the keeper sat on his back for the journey while its Lawfire traveled alongside.

At the Hearth, Ren stayed until everyone had landed. The keeper settled near its people and remained seated while Spear brought the raft around for him.

His shoulders stiffened on the way to the shelf. He moved carefully through the arch and up to the Worldroot, then sat beside a root with the blocks laid out in front of him.

Death opened each graft site, and Life sealed the wood around the inscribed glass. Ren kept a hand against the bark as the retained working entered the tree.

The burning progressed slowly. During one of his breaths, less fuel was consumed than he expected, and the flame changed less. He could follow it advancing toward completion, even though every part of that process took longer.

Quickfire had concentrated its burning into short bursts. Here the same process stretched across a longer interval. Ren held the two patterns beside each other, recognizing how Time altered the rate without changing what the fire consumed.

There was more to understand than he could apply yet. He remembered the boundary above the cleft, where ash left the slowing and fell normally, and followed that distinction as the last inscription passed beneath the bark.

The blocks gave up the finite understanding held in their marks. Ren waited until the join settled, then lifted his hand from the root.
