Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Ren crossed the sea before dawn.

Ward carried him away from the northern landing with Riptide ahead, and silver water washed quietly along the whale’s sides. Above the new coast, the ash had thinned into long bands with stars showing between them. He watched those openings as they approached. On his first journey through the Burning Sea, smoke had hidden everything above the water.

The silver gave way to black beneath Ward. Ren felt the warmth when spray touched his hand, and the familiar smell of the volcanic coast reached him. Ahead, Tide’s blue Hearthfire showed through the haze, its light catching the platforms around it.

The elder waited at the landing. It stepped aside as Ren came off Ward, then walked with him to a clear stretch of rail overlooking the coast.

”The ash is getting thinner,” it said.

”There were stars over the islands on the way here.” Ren looked toward the pale gap above the horizon. ”The sun should come through there.”

”Some of our guides saw it from your shore yesterday.”

The elder rested its hands on the rail. Around them, most of the doorways were still closed, though tenders were already moving beside the Hearthfire. Blue light reached into the pockets where the young fires drifted. Ren could hear water beneath the bridges and the low sound of the flame behind him.

He leaned against the rail and waited with the elder.

The gap above the islands brightened slowly.

Ren began to distinguish the coast beneath it: steep rock rising from the sea, lower outcrops farther along, and pale obstructions between them. The light spread until he could follow a channel that had disappeared into darkness when Ward brought him in.

Then the edge of the sun cleared the islands.

A band of ash drifted across it, dimming the light before it reached Tide. For a while, only the highest platforms caught the sun. As the band moved on, a bright patch travelled down the steps and across the lower ring, picking out wet stone and the water beneath the bridges.

The Hearthfire looked fainter against the brightening sky. Its height hadn’t changed, and Ren could still hear the same low hum, but he could now make out the far platforms through the thinner edges of the blue flame.

Steam showed white against a nearby headland. Beyond it, he could distinguish the empty outline of the Glass Hearth’s ring, though haze still hid much of the farther coast. The pale ridges in the channels remained where they had been the previous day.

Another ash band crossed the sun. Shade passed over the rail, then withdrew, leaving light across the inner platforms and a long stretch of open water.

A doorway opened behind Ren. Two members of a household stepped out, one still holding the fastening it had just undone. They stopped beside the wall and looked toward the islands. Farther along the ring, someone called through another doorway, and more people came outside.

One of the household members went down to the water and crouched beside its Lawfire. It passed a hand through the blue tip, then looked toward the islands again. The other stayed at the doorway, shading its eyes against the brightness.

”The sun’s reached their water, Ren.”

He heard Kaia through the connection as the light spread into the sheltered pockets below.

At the landing, Tarin paused with a bundle against its chest. It looked up toward the gap in the ash, held still for a breath, then bent to set the load on Ward’s back. A guide steadied it while Tarin reached for the next bundle.

Near the Hearthfire, the tender with the bowl stood between the sun and the young fires. It watched their outlines in its shadow before moving aside. The light reached the water, and the small flames continued drifting as they had before. The tender stayed beside them a little longer, then lowered its bowl to resume feeding.

The Quickfire courier passed along the lowest bridge in a bright burst. Ren followed its climb, each short rush ending at a turn or a flight of steps, until it reached the highest platform on the far side. There it stopped at the outer edge, with nothing between it and the sunlit coast.

A tender called from behind Ren. He turned toward the bridge and saw the injured guard sitting on a lower platform with its feet above the water.

He recognized the narrow chest and the small Heartflame inside it. Balm had helped hold that body together after the raiders’ attack, but the flame they had partly swallowed remained diminished.

The guard held one hand in the sunlight, palm up. It turned the hand slowly, watching the light pass through its fingers, then spread them farther apart. Ren could see the rail through the blue water of its wrist.

He stayed by the bridge until the tender called again.

When he looked back toward the elder, it was still beside the rail. Its Lawfire rested below in the water, and it had turned to examine Tide’s flame in the daylight.

”Come here,” the tender said. ”Beside me.”

Ren crouched at the pocket’s edge. Sunlight reflected from the water straight into his eyes, hiding all but the brightest parts of the young fires. He raised a hand for shade and shifted until he could distinguish their outlines.

”Can you see the ones by the root of the bridge?” the tender asked.

”Now I can.”

”I keep losing them when they move.”

It held the bowl close to the water. One of the small fires approached, briefly vanished in the reflection and became visible again beneath the tender’s hand.

Ren looked along the ledge. A narrow recess ran beside the pocket, with stone on either side where the tenders crouched to feed the fires. A cover across part of it would give them a shaded place to watch the water without closing the approach beneath the bridge.

”Have you got any flat slabs?”

The tender called another over. Together, they led him to a stack beside the loading steps and pulled a loose piece far enough out for him to inspect its underside. It was broad enough to span the recess, with room for both ends to rest on stone.

Ren took one end while the tenders shared the other. His right fingers closed farther around the edge than they had the previous evening, though the grip still stopped short. He let his left hand take most of his share and used the right to steady it.

They carried the slab along the ledge, pausing where the bridge narrowed. Water beaded beneath the tenders’ hands as they adjusted their holds. Ren waited for them to settle their end before lowering his onto the supporting stone.

One tender checked beneath it while the other fitted a small wedge at an uneven corner. Ren pressed down, then against the edge. The slab stayed seated, its weight resting clear of the pocket.

The tender crouched beside the new shade.

”Better,” it said. ”I can see this side.”

Ren knelt next to it. The nearest fires showed clearly beneath the cover, but glare still hid the farther part of the recess.

The tender reached across with its empty hand, checking whether it could still get to the bridge side of the pocket. Ren moved back to give it room. There would have to be enough space for both the bowl and an arm when a fire drifted away from the ledge.

”Another beside it?”

The tender checked the space above the water and nodded.

They brought a second slab and set it with a gap between the two covers, leaving room to reach through. After checking the supports, the tender moved its bowl beneath the shade. Ren watched a young fire approach from the open water; this time, its outline remained visible all the way to the ledge.

The guide who had taken the Glassfire households to their ring found Ren as he left the pocket.

”The platforms stood,” it said. ”Their tools are there. Two households are staying, with their Lawfires in the old sheltered water.”

”What about the third?”

”Still looking through what they left. They haven’t decided.”

”And the Hearth?”

”Dark. Nobody has tried to light it.”

Ren nodded. ”Let me know if they need help making the platforms usable.”

”The one with the stretched chest was on the upper platform when I left. It could see Tide from there.”

The guide pointed out the route it had used around the pale stone before going down to speak with the others. Ren followed its gesture across the water. In daylight, he could see where the first obstruction forced the road away from the headland.

The Nightfire guide arrived carrying a cord knotted at intervals. It laid the cord along the rail and held one section straight.

”The tender measured the opening. This is the width.” It indicated the next knot. ”And the height of the cover.”

”Did the sunlight reach beneath it?”

”Where you said. They’re watching how far it moves across the Hearth.”

”Take that to the northern landing. The Glassfire craftsperson will show your people where to cut the stone. Tell the guides if you need help carrying the slabs back.”

”We’ll look at them first.”

It coiled the cord and went down to its Lawfire.

Ren stayed on the ring while the next load was finished. The courier remained on the highest platform, and the guard had lowered its hand to the stone beside it. Beneath the new covers, the tender moved its bowl between the young fires, pausing where one came close to the ledge.

Tarin called up from the landing when Ward was ready. A household was making the trip to the northern shore, and its bundles had been secured behind Keep. Ren went down and climbed aboard with them, leaving room along the whale’s side for their Lawfires to travel nearby.

Riptide led them out through the channel. As Ward turned toward the silver water, Ren looked back at Tide’s blue flame beneath the broken bands of ash.

Eira was at the Worldroot when he returned.

She crouched beside the pocket with a notebook on her knee, looking between the page and the small gold figure resting against a root. Loom kept the water moving beneath the princess, and Wick glowed on the bank near Eira’s boots.

Ren came down beside her.

”You’ve been to the beach?”

”I came up from there.” She glanced toward the coast. ”I wasn’t expecting another sea.”

”It arrived yesterday.”

”I saw the ash. There’s some on the flowers too.” She looked back at the pocket. ”Was she in it?”

”Under the central vent. She couldn’t hold a body when I found her.”

Eira closed the notebook around her pencil while he crouched.

”What helped?”

”Life made the shape last longer. The Worldroot’s support kept it from breaking apart, but I had to carry that through my hand until I brought her here. The roots have held her since.”

”And the flame in her chest?”

”Still incomplete. Full maturation needs compatible nurturing material. That much I know. I don’t have any.”

”Do you know which material?”

”No. Just the requirement.”

Eira watched the princess for a moment, then opened her notebook again.

”May I come back to check her? I can draw what she’s holding now and compare it on later visits. Her hands, her face, the colors. The Heartflame too, if I keep the same angle.”

Ren looked at the small fingers resting against the root. ”Yes. Tell me if you notice a change.”

”I will.” She noted where the hand rested against the root before turning the page. ”That gives me somewhere to start. I can sit here again next time.”

She shifted to a place where the light caught the narrow chest and began sketching. Her pencil paused often while she checked the outline against the page. Once, she moved her knee back from the bank so she could see the whole arm without leaning over the pocket.

Ren settled against the trunk beside her. The princess’s shape remained steady while Loom’s current moved around the roots. He let Eira work and turned his attention to the System.

’Am I ready for Stage Seven?’

[STAGE SEVEN REQUIREMENTS: NOT MET.]

He thought of the figures from the previous evening, especially Time. The merge had given him more to work with, but he still needed to understand what had come into his world. The basins were here now, and the witness could answer him in words when they spoke.

For the moment, Eira was checking the princess, the guides were running between shores, and the Nightfire had taken their measurements to the landing. Ren stood, brushing a few grains of ash from his trousers, and looked toward the path through the flowers.

He still needed to find warmer water for the families on the northern shore.
