Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The elder looked from Ren’s lowered hand to the road, then touched its own chest and pointed at him.

[CONCEPT: ENTER. MUST. BIND.]

Ren shook his head, indicating the families waiting beside their bundles.

The elder watched his hand before pointing down the road again.

[CONCEPT: ENTER. STAY. NOT. BOUND.]

He nodded.

It turned toward Ward in the water below, brought two fingers together, then looked back at Ren. He confirmed that too. When it indicated the families and repeated the distinction, he nodded once more.

The Pyreborn who had asked turned toward its family. The elder exchanged a few gestures with it, then returned its attention to Ren.

He let his hand rest at his side. Given a statement he could understand, he could confirm it or correct it. The elder had begun separating the questions into parts small enough for him to answer.

It tried the same thing with the hauler’s question. Was there room for everyone gathered on this platform? Ren nodded. The elder indicated the other platforms, the occupied doorways and the guides on the lower bridges. He nodded again.

When it swept its hand toward the sea beyond Tide, he hesitated. He didn’t know how many people remained out there. Ren pointed toward the distant islands and spread his hands, then confirmed the smaller number again when the elder checked.

It relayed the answer to the hauler, which moved aside to let the Glassfire approach.

— • —

Before taking the next question, the elder indicated Ren and the road.

[CONCEPT: INSIDE. REFUSE. YOU.]

Ren nodded.

[CONCEPT: INSIDE. TURN. AGAINST. YOU.]

He shook his head. The elder held his gaze, then checked:

[CONCEPT: WORLD. PREVENTS.]

Ren nodded again. The sunken sea’s residents could refuse him, argue or swim away; they couldn’t be turned against him.

The elder passed the answer to those nearest it. A Steamfire hauler stopped adjusting its bundle and asked something that made it repeat the exchange. Ren waited while the others listened.

Then the elder returned to the Glassfire’s question about what his world would consume.

[CONCEPT: WORLD. TAKES. NOTHING.]

Ren shook his head.

The elder’s hand stopped above the platform. It looked out across the water, then pointed at Ren.

[CONCEPT: OUR. SEA. INTO. YOUR. WORLD.]

He nodded.

It indicated the stone beneath them and the families on the steps.

[CONCEPT: PEOPLE. HERE. GO. WITH. SEA.]

Another nod. The silver sea had brought its city and its inhabitants with it. This fragment would join his world too; crossing the arch beforehand was a way to move early, not the only way to arrive.

The elder looked toward the road.

[CONCEPT: STAY. HERE. STILL. YOUR. WORLD.]

Ren confirmed it, then indicated Ward and repeated the earlier head-shake about the families’ bonds. The elder checked that distinction again before passing the answers along.

Several people stopped packing to listen. One called a family back from the steps. Ren waited through the repeated questions, keeping his answers the same: their sea was coming into his world, and living there would not make them formal Subjects.

— • —

Tide’s next questions concerned the journey.

The haulers wanted to know the distance and whether the crossing at the bend would take them fully laden. The elder answered from what it had seen of the route, pointing toward the lower bridge while a guide added gestures of its own.

Two families went back into their doorways and returned with more belongings. Jars accumulated at the top of the steps. A Steamfire tested the weight of one, set it down beside another and adjusted its grip to carry both.

A tender brought a Cinder down and settled it beside the bundles. Its little flame inclined in the draft between the platforms, and the tender crouched nearby while another Pyreborn counted the jars.

Ren moved out of their way and looked along the water passages.

The pale stone remained where parts of the sea had petrified. Beyond Tide, the route was passable again, but none of that hardened water had softened, and the Glass Hearth beyond the headland was still dead.

The elder came to stand beside him.

[CONCEPT: SEA. STILL. DYING.]

Ren nodded. Defeating the World Fire had given them a road out. It hadn’t restored what the sea had lost.

Spear had come up from the landing and remained close through the questions. The elder turned to it and went over the confirmed terms. Ren stayed while they exchanged gestures, then indicated the routes he knew toward the nearby Hearths.

The Quickfire courier waited beside the lowest bridge. Spear descended to its Lawfire and joined it, and the two set off together, disappearing around the bend while the haulers continued bringing their loads down.

— • —

The Glassfire gathered nearer once Spear had left.

They had been sheltering at Tide since their Hearth went out, with their Lawfires grouped beside the lowest bridge. The craftsperson stood among them carrying the tools Ren remembered from the repairs.

The elder repeated the terms for those who hadn’t heard them. Several looked toward the headland when it explained that the land would come too, but their first question concerned what they would find on the other side.

[CONCEPT: GROUND. FOR. HEARTH.]

Ren nodded. They could look for a place along his coast or wait for their own ground to arrive. The merge wouldn’t necessarily rekindle a dead Hearth, though, and he declined to promise that when the elder checked.

The craftsperson tapped its tools and indicated the stone beneath their feet. Through the elder, it asked whether there was stone to work. Ren nodded, remembering the exposed rock along his shore.

Water for their fires? Yes, there was a sea. Would their Lawfires hold on it? Ren couldn’t confirm that for the Glassfire. He waited until the elder offered the uncertainty back to him, then nodded to that answer too.

The craftsperson lowered its hand to the tools while the elder passed the answers along. One household began gathering its belongings. Another remained beside the bridge, listening as its neighbors gestured toward the road.

Ren watched the craftsperson check the fastening across its chest. He could offer a place to work and material to examine, but they would know better than him whether his coastal stone was suitable. He hadn’t built what they had lost.

Farther back stood the Glassfire whose chest was still stretched around its small Heartflame. It rested a hand on a bundle without lifting it. Ren couldn’t tell whether it had decided to go or had simply prepared in case it did.

— • —

He noticed the Nightfire when one stepped clear of the others.

There were five near the edge of the platform, their flames almost black against the stone and dark water. Ren could make out their outlines more easily when someone passed behind them carrying a brighter fire. Within each chest, a small Heartflame remained visible.

Their speaker addressed the elder, then waited while it turned to Ren.

[CONCEPT: REFUSE. YES. TURN. AGAINST. NO.]

He nodded. Those were the terms he had confirmed.

[CONCEPT: THEN. YOUR. WORLD. HOLDS. US.]

Ren kept his hands still. He couldn’t agree to everything that might mean, but shaking his head would dismiss the restriction they had just discussed.

He indicated the elder and confirmed the two conditions again. The Nightfire listened to the answer, then pointed toward the sea and planted both hands against its chest.

[CONCEPT: OUR. HEARTH. STAYS. OUTSIDE.]

Ren shook his head.

Another Nightfire moved beside the speaker. A Pyreborn farther back set its bundle down and joined the exchange, gesturing sharply toward the road. The elder waited until their hands lowered before turning to Ren.

[CONCEPT: WE. REFUSE. MERGE. YOU. WAIT.]

His jaw tightened. He had kept answering because they needed to understand what was coming, but they were asking him to put it off until they approved.

The grey tree was still approaching. Back home, Kaia held a world that already had people living in it, and the strength this merge could bring might matter when that threat reached them. He had fought the World Fire and carried their dying princess to safety. He would help them prepare, too, but he wasn’t going to leave his own world weaker for their sake.

”No.”

The word came out hard enough that the elder stopped moving its hand. Ren’s good hand had closed into a fist; he opened it before speaking again.

”The merge will happen.”

They could hear his anger, even if they couldn’t understand the words. He pointed across the sea, then at himself, and held the elder’s gaze.

[CONCEPT: YOU. MERGE. EVEN. WE. REFUSE.]

Ren nodded once.

The elder turned and passed that answer to the waiting Pyreborn. This time Ren left his hands at his sides while they responded.

He didn’t like the way the families had gone quiet. His first impulse was to offer something else, find another way to make the answer easier to accept. He let the impulse pass. As their lord, he would have to listen to complaints and still make decisions some of them hated. Being patient didn’t excuse him from being decisive, especially when the people already under his care would bear the cost of another delay.

The Nightfire speaker withdrew to the outer edge of the platform. Its companion followed, while two others stayed near the elder. Ren let them argue among themselves, then turned back to finish the arrangements.

— • —

By the time the local questions eased, more families had set off toward the arch. Ren returned to Ward, and the elder accompanied them in its Lawfire along the route.

They passed laden groups moving between the islands. At the bend, a guide waited for a narrow stretch to clear before bringing the next household through. Ren watched them find their footing while Ward carried him onward toward the ledge.

The trial families remained near the arch with their guide and bundles. Their Lawfires floated in sheltered water below. Off to one side, the Stillfire keeper sat on the rock with its hands in its lap, facing the sea. It had come as far as the ledge but remained apart from those waiting to cross.

Ren stepped ashore while the elder approached the guide.

Before anyone went through, it gave them the same terms discussed at Tide. Ren stood nearby for the questions, confirming the distinction between residence and bonding once more when the guide checked it.

Two families brought their bundles forward. One carried a Cinder close to its chest. The guide joined them, and Ren permitted the group through.

The first adult stopped before the grey light and put a hand into it. It drew the hand back, looked at its fingers, then reached for the next member of its family and stepped across. The others followed with the Cinder between them.

Riptide raised a shallow sheet beside the ledge, bringing their Lawfires level with the opening. Ren permitted those through as well. The guide waited until the families and their fires had crossed before following with its own.

Grey light filled the space they had passed through. Those still waiting moved closer to watch, and one household set its bundles back on the rock. Ren remained beside the elder until the guide returned.

When the guide stepped out again, several heads turned toward it. Its Lawfire followed through the opening, and Riptide lowered it to the water beside the ledge.

The guide approached the elder, indicated the arch and swept its hands apart. Then it pointed to its fire, holding one hand above the burning surface.

[CONCEPT: WATER. WIDE.]

[CONCEPT: OUR. FIRE. HOLDS.]

Ren looked from the guide to the families. It had seen the water and returned with its Lawfire intact. That couldn’t tell them how life would be there, but they had watched one of their own cross and come back.

A family lifted its bundles and approached the opening.

Behind it, the Stillfire keeper stood. It crossed the rock and took a place at the back of the group, its hands resting at its sides.

Ren noticed it while allowing the next family through, then turned his attention to their waiting fires.

— • —

Spear and the courier were back at Tide when Ren and the elder returned.

They found them above the landing, waiting clear of the haulers coming down the steps. Spear approached with the first report.

[CONCEPT: BLOOM. HEARTH. KEEPERS. STAY.]

[CONCEPT: OTHERS. CHOOSE. GO.]

Ren remembered the green Hearth’s broken wall and the plants left brown by the aging. The custodians meant to remain with the fire they tended, while other inhabitants would choose whether to cross ahead.

He indicated the sea and repeated the gesture for the merge. The elder checked with Spear before relaying its answer: the keepers knew their island would come across. They intended to stay with their Hearth through it.

Ren nodded. That was their choice to make. Spear moved aside for the courier.

It had brought another request back through the routes between the Hearths.

[CONCEPT: HOUR. FIRE. SEE. ROAD. FIRST.]

Ren nodded and pointed toward the route they had just traveled. The elder checked:

[CONCEPT: LOOK. THEN. CHOOSE.]

He confirmed it. Hourfire could inspect the road before deciding whether to cross ahead or remain at its basin until the merge. Neither answer would delay the preparations.

After the reports, the elder went down toward the platform ring around Tide’s Hearthfire.

The great blue flame rose from the water in the center, its low hum audible beneath the movement on the bridges. Several tenders waited on the nearest platform. The elder joined them, and Ren stayed on the steps while they spoke.

One tender looked toward the fire before answering. Another indicated the departing families, then rested a hand on the platform’s edge. Ren could see their gestures, but no concepts reached him, and he waited until the elder came back.

It pointed to the blue flame, then traced the platform ring around it.

[CONCEPT: HEARTH. GROUND. TOGETHER.]

Ren nodded. The drowned city had arrived whole, and there was no reason yet to dismantle Tide and carry its fire separately. He would check the supports before authorizing the merge, with the tenders showing him what needed to remain connected.

The elder gestured to them, and one came forward. Ren went down the steps to meet it.

His silver sea was already full of people. Before he brought this one home, he needed to know where it would arrive.
