Chapter 37: Chapter 35: Exploitation Is Also a Form of Protection

Clang~

A resonant sword cry echoed through the air, and Baiyi, who had already reached the ground via a passage, turned back for a glance.

He just happened to see Kami swing his sword and slice through the Scarlet.

At the same time, he also noticed a glowing red crystal between the Crimson Sacrifice and the many Blood Mage below, which might very well be the Ancient God Flesh.

At the edge of the battlefield, the Mage Corps had been surrounded again, with a thousand Apocalypse Soldiers and five hundred Will Clan members battling with some Scarlet Sect members.

Although there didn’t seem to be that many people from the Scarlet Sect, the scene was still extremely chaotic for a while.

Baiyi withdrew his gaze and swiftly traversed between the buildings, inquiring aloud, ”How many Teleportation Arrays have you set up? I need to return to the Inner City now.”

”Are you planning to rob those wealthy merchants? That’s a great idea.” Sabo’s tone held a hint of surprise: ”The teleportation array that brought us here is still usable, my dear friend.”

Baiyi asked, ”What do you think of my image?”

”My friend, you are, of course, an unprecedented genius. If you mean your image to the public, it might be just a tad greedy,” Sabo said somewhat cautiously, ”But my friend, trust me, that is a very good quality.”

Baiyi nodded understandably, ”Indeed, it’s very good. If I happen to be among the victims when those wealthy merchants get robbed, do you think me going to the battlefield to snatch some things as compensation could be reasonable?”

Sabo paused, a bit surprised, ”Is that necessary? If you want, you can use both the Transformation Potion and Hidden Potion to participate.”

Baiyi quickly arrived outside the building hosting the Teleportation Array and said quietly, ”One must act the whole part, and the only golden upper-tier scroll I can use to change the situation is, while from the black market, not completely untraceable, and also....”

As Baiyi spoke, it was like he was watching the first scene of a promotional video, with the Level 77 City Lord mysteriously disappearing and Dongwu City falling, everything turning to ruins.

”I sense that if that mysterious force gets hold of the Ancient God Flesh, Dongwu City might not remain peaceful anymore. Therefore, I’ll have to take some risks.”

With that, Baiyi pushed the door open and was instantly hit by a strange smell.

Ignoring some filth in the corners, Baiyi’s Magic Power surged out to begin powering the Teleportation Array.

He never quite understood how the Old City Lord, nearly top of the ladder just under Legendary, could have Dongwu City taken by Old Wolf; even a single shot from a City Defense Cannon would leave Old Wolf half-crippled.

It would make sense if the Black Night Rose was involved, though.

And now that he had changed many things, making the Federation aware of this power, Baiyi didn’t know if the timeline where Dongwu City falls would advance.

For now, the safest option would be to temporarily keep the Ancient God Flesh in his grasp or expose it to the spotlight.

Because a reputation is a double-edged sword—as long as Black Night Rose has its eyes on you, no one can escape before reaching Gold.

”Alright, my friend, as you wish, I’ll tidy up for you,” Sabo didn’t refuse either, since the more they obtained, the more they divided, naturally prompting him to wish for Baiyi to do more.

”Alright.” Baiyi responded, lightly touching his headset to cut off the communication, his eyes full of contemplation.

The other question is, why does the Will Family also want the Ancient God Flesh so badly?

This family is quite famous, and during version 3.0, they still stood firm, with no rumors of them being part of Black Night Rose.

This eliminates the summoning of the Ancient God as a possibility for them; sealing or collecting it cannot rationalize this pursuit halfway across the Federation.

As he pondered, the Teleportation Array’s power-up finished, requiring several rounds of mental preparation before stepping onto it.

Buzz~

When the array activated, a strong feeling of vertigo hit, followed by what felt like a sudden dull blow to the head, making him stagger a bit.

After shaking his head and looking around again, the foul smell had vanished.

Pulling out the only Spiritual Recovery Potion from the multitude in his pocket, he gulped it down and instantly felt much clearer-minded.

Walking out onto the streets, although the battlefield in the Outer City District was intense enough, it still didn’t stop the Inner City’s extravagance.

In the early hours, the casinos were still booming with loud cheers, and not far away, the brothels were brightly lit—an expensive display screen plopped in the lobby, showing scantily clad beauties of various races fleeting past, tantalizing the hearts of those who watched.

Baiyi swiftly headed to the Potion Shop, opened the door; the two young girls should already be asleep, leaving Mr. Or, a Level 50 Witch Demon, on watch.

Mr. Or seemed to sense something, and the whole shop’s atmosphere suddenly chilled, with the deep blue flame under his hood turning scarlet.

Baiyi dispelled the Hidden Potion’s effect and, under Mr. Or’s icy gaze, softly said, ”Mr. Or, summon some ghosts and help me move some things from some wealthy merchants’ treasure vaults, and we’ll split twenty-eighty.”

”Really?” Mr. Or was genuinely surprised, and scarlet ghostly flames flickered with astonished emotions within the hood, slowly reverting back to blue.

The effects of the contract they signed were significant, and what was initially a somewhat relaxed contract almost turned him into a slave after its folding.

If not for the tenure being only ten years, he might have long dragged Baiyi down with him.

A few days ago, he was already taken aback when Baiyi offered to pay him a salary; now, sharing profits as well....

”Of course.” Baiyi nodded, casually pulling a sheet of white paper from the counter and began sketching illusory text with his Magic Power: ”Follow this list to move the stuff, try not to get noticed.”

”Rest assured, I hope the profit-sharing isn’t a lie,” Or’s tone held slight excitement, for with resources, he harbored hopes and wouldn’t have to stagnate needlessly for five years.

Though for those like the Undead Creatures, sleeping away five years wasn’t unheard of, but that would be an exploitation, a severe kind, leaving him without a good night’s sleep in half a year.

He knew what Baiyi feared: when such a contract between a weaker and a stronger party is effective, the greater their power gap, the looser the contract becomes.

During the six months since signing the contract, he hadn’t had sufficient Magic Power, rendering a breakthrough to Gold impossible.

The five-year term of that oppressive contract was because it was a tenure where both parties wouldn’t come to ruin.

The exploitation also served to protect Baiyi, and now, this protection was easing.

The reason Or understood was Baiyi had now broken through to Silver, closing the capability gap between them; Or’s growing strength couldn’t threaten Baiyi for the time being.

Although still being exploited, Or didn’t find this squeeze as unsettling this time.

Magic Power danced at Baiyi’s fingertips as the sheet filled densely with text.

The first name was a boss named Chi Feng, with the rest being casino owners’ names, or rich merchants made wealthy from human trafficking or loan sharking.

Baiyi wasn’t extraordinarily evil; given the choice, he’d still like to be a good person, certainly not because these wealthy people’s cash flows were extraordinarily robust!

”And this.” Baiyi pulled out a crimson vial, continuing to explain something...
