Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Tragic Woman

Gu Zhishu’s eyes turned red after seeing his grandfather’s belongings.

He didn’t immediately take the gold bars and money notes, but instead picked up a photo album and flipped through it in the light of the flames, taking out a picture and staring at it for a long time.

Yuan Chun felt she should leave, feeling a bit awkward.

Just as she lifted her foot, she heard Gu Zhishu ask her, ”Comrade, what’s your name?”

”Feng Yuanchun.”

”Comrade Yuanchun, thank you for helping me find the photo album and the wealth my grandfather left behind. These money notes are for you, as a token of gratitude.”

”No need, those are left for you by Grandpa Gu, keep them well. If you don’t spend them, keep them as a keepsake.”

After Yuan Chun finished speaking, she left.

Gu Zhishu stared blankly at her departing figure for a long time and then, with a hint of resignation and amusement, said, ”Haha, I didn’t expect Feng Family Village to have a girl who treats money like dirt, hundreds of dollars, saying no just like that.”

When Yuan Chun returned home, she mentioned Gu Zhishu to Grandma Feng.

Grandma Feng sighed and told her, ”Old Man Gu had a son who went to serve in the army, but a few years later, news came that he was killed in action. Mrs. Gu couldn’t take the blow and passed away, and Old Man Gu couldn’t go to the army to see his son for the last time. By the time he took care of Mrs. Gu’s funeral and went to the army, his daughter-in-law had already completed her husband’s funeral on her own and left with a one-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter.”

”His daughter-in-law was from the south, and after Old Man Gu got the address of her family’s home from the army, he immediately went to bring back his grandchildren. But when he got there, the house was empty; they had moved away. From then on, his daughter-in-law and her children just disappeared.”

”Before Old Man Gu died, he regretted never seeing his grandchildren.”

”Unexpectedly, five years after Old Man Gu’s death, his grandson actually showed up.”

Grandma Feng sighed with emotion.

Yuan Chun didn’t expect that the next day when she returned from the mountains, she would find Gu Zhishu at her house.

She was a bit stunned, ”Comrade Gu Zhishu, why are you at my house?”

Gu Zhishu smiled and said, ”I came to express my gratitude. If it weren’t for your help, I wouldn’t have found the photo album my grandfather left.”

”It was just a small effort. Even without me, if you had looked a bit longer, you definitely would have found it,” Yuan Chun replied nonchalantly, waving her hand dismissively.

Grandma Feng also said, ”Little Shu, it’s just a small matter. How could Yuan Chun accept such a grand gesture from you? You should take it back.”

On the table, there were two net bags of items, two bottles of white liquor, two jars of malted milk, two cans of fruit, two kilos of White Rabbit candy, a packet of brown sugar, a packet of white sugar, two packets of pastries, and two tins of milk powder, all valuable items.

”Grandma Feng, this is a small token of my regard; you must accept it. Even without Comrade Yuan Chun’s help with this matter, I would have visited you. I heard from Village Chief Seventh Uncle that my grandfather received a lot of care from you before, for which I thank you.”

”We’re all neighbors and part of the same village, helping each other out. Your grandfather helped my family quite a bit while he was alive, and Yuan Chun had more than her share of candy from your grandfather.”

Grandma Feng continued sharing stories about Grandpa Gu, and invited Gu Zhishu to stay for lunch. Coincidentally, Yuan Chun had hunted a few wild rabbits and chickens earlier, so she cooked soy-braised rabbit meat, chicken stewed with potatoes, sautéed some vegetables, and made a big plate of wild duck eggs.

On her way to school, Yuan Chun passed through a large reed marsh, and every day after school, Yuan Chun and her siblings would sweep through the area.

With 007, their golden finger, her siblings always returned with a full harvest.

The family had an abundance of wild duck eggs, more than they could consume, and Qiu Guihua had pickled quite a few salted duck eggs as well.
