Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 39: Chapter 39: The Miserable Woman 39

The house belonged to a lonely elderly person in the village. Since the elder passed away, the house has remained vacant for years, becoming quite dilapidated.

The window creaked when touched.

The man looked out the window and said, ”Who’s outside, come on in.”

Yuan Chun’s face stiffened.

It’s truly awkward to be caught peeping.

But Yuan Chun was very curious about the man’s identity, so she went inside and began interrogating, ”Who are you? You’re not from this village. What are you doing in Feng Family Village? What are you looking for here?”

The man chuckled, ”Miss, you’re spying on me, and yet you’re so righteous about it?”

”You’re the one stealing from our villagers, why shouldn’t I take a look?” Yuan Chun glanced at the dilapidated house, ”This house has been empty for five years. What are you rummaging for? You don’t really think there are gold and jewels buried here, do you?”

”This is my house.” Gu Zhishu placed the torch in a chipped clay pot and continued searching through the cupboards.

”Your house? Impossible.” Yuan Chun exclaimed, ”This is Grandpa Gu’s house, he was a lonely old man with no descendants left behind, how could this be your house?”

Without lifting his head, Gu Zhishu continued searching and explained, ”The Grandpa Gu you refer to is my actual grandfather. After my father died, my mother took me when I was just one year old and left the army, going to live at my maternal grandmother’s house. I only recently discovered I still had a grandfather.”

He sighed regretfully, ”Unfortunately, I arrived too late.”

”I’m looking for an album my grandfather left behind. I went to the village chief’s house, and he said that after my grandfather died, nobody touched anything in this house, so I’m here hoping for luck.”

”Photos?” Yuan Chun’s curiosity piqued, ”You’re looking for your grandfather’s photos to see what he looked like?”

”I want to know what my grandmother looked like.”

”Your grandmother passed away many years ago, right?”

At least, in the original host’s memory, they had never seen Granny Gu.

”Yes, my mother said my sister resembled my grandmother a lot, about ninety percent likeness, and I want to know what my sister looked like. My sister disappeared when she was five.”

When Gu Zhishu mentioned this, he fell silent.

Yuan Chun felt the heaviness in this topic too.

”Then keep searching, I... forget it, I’ll help you look.”

For Grandpa Gu’s sake, she should help his grandson. When Grandpa Gu was alive, he often supplied the original host with food.

Let’s repay some of Grandpa Gu’s kindness for the original host.

Yuan Chun was too lazy to rummage through dusty, broken furniture, so she asked 007, ”Where is the album Gu Zhishu wants? Do you know where it’s hidden?”

immediately scanned the entire house and then exclaimed in surprise, ”Host, it’s inside a compartment under the bed board, along with two gold bars and several hundred yuan, plus quite a few vouchers—all are nationwide and indefinite for grain, meat, cloth, and milk powder.”

Yuan Chun raised an eyebrow, ”Grandpa Gu was a war hero, a retired veteran, receiving state subsidies while alive. Having nationwide vouchers and so much money is normal.”

Back then, Grandpa Gu saved children from the village and was killed by a wolf descending from the mountain. Perhaps his sudden death left no time to arrange affairs, and those money notes and gold bars were so well hidden that no one ever discovered them.

Yuan Chun glanced at Gu Zhishu.

Forget it, considering Grandpa Gu is a national hero, a battle hero, she wouldn’t covet his legacy.

Soon, Yuan Chun pretended to discover the compartment beneath the bed board, instructing Gu Zhishu to lift it himself.
