”Hello, Hong Fang?” At the same time, the phone connected. A steady, robust voice came through the receiver. Even through the phone, it sounded very authoritative, imbued with the air of a man in power.

Clearly, the person on the other end of the line was none other than Xiao Nanyun, a Deputy Governor of Jiangnan Province!

He was also the brother of Yang Peicheng’s mother, Xiao Hongfang.

”Brother-in-law, it’s me, Yang Bin. I’m so sorry to trouble you again...” Before Xiao Hongfang could even speak, Yang Bin couldn’t stop himself from taking a deep breath and speaking first.

However, before he could finish, Xiao Nanyun cut him off. ”That’s enough,” he said indifferently. ”I know why you’re calling, but you’d better stay out of this. Secretary Zhuo from Northern Mountain already called me. This time, Peicheng brought this entirely upon himself. He deserves to be severely punished by the law!”

Yang Bin’s heart skipped a beat. ”Secretary... Secretary Zhuo?!”

”But... but...” On the other end of the line, Xiao Hongfang was dumbfounded. She never expected her own brother to refuse to help, especially when it concerned his own nephew. ”Brother, that’s your nephew! My only son! How can you be so cruel as to say you won’t do anything? I don’t care! Brother, you have to help me with this...” Xiao Hongfang panicked, her voice rising to a desperate shriek.

”That’s enough. Let’s leave it at that. Both of you need to calm down.” At that, Xiao Nanyun simply hung up the phone.

Listening to the busy tone from the receiver, Yang Bin and his wife, Xiao Hongfang, could only look at each other, their faces filled with despair and regret.

”Yang Bin, what on earth is my brother thinking?” Xiao Hongfang was in a total panic, sobbing as she spoke. ”Isn’t it just that Peicheng is young and impulsive? Maybe a bit too full of himself, and he acted recklessly this one time? Isn’t what’s happened already enough? What more do they want?”

”Shut up!” Yang Bin couldn’t stop himself from bellowing. ”Young and impulsive? Acted recklessly just once? Are you really unable to understand what your brother meant, or are you just playing dumb? That little brat has pierced the heavens tonight, and you still expect him to walk out of there unscathed?”

He spat, ”Let me tell you, Xiao Hongfang! If you hadn’t spent all these years spoiling that damn dog from the moment he was born, would he be in this mess today?”

”It’s my fault, it’s all my fault... but what do we do now?” Worried sick about her son’s safety, Xiao Hongfang was in no mood to argue with Yang Bin.

”What do we do? We do what has to be done! That little brat must have started the trouble first. Otherwise, someone of the other party’s status and level would never be this relentless! I’m done with this. There’s nothing I can do. That’s it.” Yang Bin roared with fury, yet he seemed to age a decade in an instant. His back hunched, he turned and walked away.

Only Xiao Hongfang remained, crying and blaming herself. She, too, seemed to have aged considerably. ”It’s all my fault... If I hadn’t been so indulgent with Peicheng all these years, none of this would have happened tonight.”

Although Xiao Hongfang spoiled her son, she wasn’t a complete fool; she could still grasp the severity of a situation.

Right now, even her own brother, the distinguished Deputy Governor of Jiangnan Province, Xiao Nanyun, had said such things. She knew perfectly well what that implied. It meant that the person her son had offended was far more powerful than even her brother—so powerful that her own brother didn’t dare to get involved, fearing he’d be dragged down too!

This must be what people call retribution. If not for her excessive indulgence in the past, how could things have ended up like this?
