This Life, I'm Raising the Right Man

She’s now been settled by him, presumably already reunited with her family.

After the palace banquet ended, Zhang Zhaodi rushed back to the palace where the banquet was held to meet Su Yaoguang, who had come looking for her, and then the whole family went home.

”Mom, where did you go just now?” Su Yaoguang asked Zhang Zhaodi inside the carriage.

Zhang Zhaodi replied, ”I went to the toilet! The palace toilet is even more fragrant than the ones outside; there’s no smell at all.”

Seeing Zhang Zhaodi’s natural expression that didn’t seem like anything was amiss, Su Yaoguang didn’t ask further.

”I never thought that one day I could enter the palace,” Zhang Yingdi said, ”and our child is gaining experience while still in my belly.”

”Auntie, Uncle did so well on the exam; he’ll soon be assigned an official position. Then you’ll be an official’s wife. Congratulations to you and Uncle.”

”I think this girl just wants us to praise Wang Shu. After all, when it comes to being outstanding, who can compare to Wang Shu? Don’t worry, we’ve prepared a gift. In the future, Wang Shu and your uncle will both hold office, and we can bask in the glory of having a niece like this.” Zhang Yingdi teased Su Yaoguang.

Su Yaoguang hugged Zhou Wangshu’s arm and said, ”Our Wang Shu is naturally amazing. People outside are saying this year’s new Champion Scholar is better looking than the Third Scholar.”

Zhang Zhaodi looked towards the direction of the palace gate, which had shrunk into a small black dot, and a worried expression flashed in her eyes.

”Did any of you see the National Guardian General?” Zhang Zhaodi casually asked.

Su Yaoguang and Zhang Yingdi exchanged a glance.

When did Zhang Zhaodi become so close with the National Guardian General?

”Mom, something unpleasant happened in the palace just now,” Su Yaoguang said, ”You went to the toilet and didn’t see the scene. I heard the Commander of the Imperial Guard rushed into the palace looking for the Crown Prince, saying the National Guardian General was in trouble, leading everyone to Princess Consort Rong’s palace. Inside the palace, there were ambiguous sounds, and everyone thought it was the National Guardian General with Lady Rong, but when they opened the door, it turned out to be two eunuchs.”

”Even if the eunuchs are normally frivolous, they wouldn’t do such sordid things in their master’s palace. Today’s matter clearly has issues. Mom, what do you think happened in the palace tonight? Why is it so bizarre?”

Zhang Zhaodi said, ”Actually, it’s not that bizarre. It’s just that someone knocked out the National Guardian General, then sent him to Lady Rong’s bed. Lady Rong was under the influence of sedatives, and she was lying on the same bed with the National Guardian General. If someone barged in at that moment, they wouldn’t be able to clear their name no matter how they argued. Your mom, being an unsung hero, happened to witness this shameful scene. I first knocked out the two eunuchs and then woke General Su up, telling him what I knew. But he seemed to never leave the palace; could it be that he’s being punished because of Lady Rong’s situation?”

”Mom, are you saying tonight’s events had your involvement?”

Several pairs of eyes looked at Zhang Zhaodi in amazement.

Zhang Zhaodi, feeling a bit uneasy being looked at with such eyes, said, ”I just happened to see and thought he was an okay person. If he were to be schemed against like that, it would be too pitiful.”

”Mom, you’re really bold,” Jiang Jing said, ”That was the Imperial Palace. Moreover, the one scheming against General Su must be quite formidable. Helping General Su could mean putting yourself in a dangerous situation.”

”I’m just an ordinary citizen; surely no one would cause me trouble? No one else saw it at the time, and General Su wouldn’t speak of it outside.”

”Mom didn’t do anything wrong; General Su is a righteous person who shouldn’t be harmed by such vile means. If this were proven and a verdict reached, General Su would likely not survive. After all, she is the Emperor’s woman, and while the Emperor can choose not to want her, he absolutely cannot let another man covet her.”

”In that case, you’re General Su’s savior. General Su was indeed fortunate to encounter you, big sister,” Zhang Yingdi said. ”If he had encountered another woman, he might not have had such luck.”

”In that situation, the National Guardian General actually stabbed his arm with a dagger, repeatedly, to wake himself up. His persistence is truly extraordinary; you can tell how much hardship he must have endured in the military over the years,” Zhang Zhaodi remarked.

”Mom, you seem very concerned about him,” Su Yaoguang said. ”Is it because he resembles Dad, so you...”

”No, your dad is your dad. What I like is his character, not his face. How could I see someone resembling him and immediately take a liking?”
