Chapter 1001: Chapter 437: Montefel Siege (Part 1)

On the tenth day of the siege, the undead finally launched a very fierce attack. Led by several Tomb Evil Ghosts, several Skeleton Warrior Legions and Zombie Legions launched an extremely fierce assault on the walls of Montefel Castle, with the undead army’s offensive coming in waves, bringing great pressure to the defenders.

At this time, Duke Fulcard personally led the knights of Montfort on patrol along the walls. His cries full of fighting spirit and hope greatly boosted the courage of the defenders. After he personally fought a bloody battle on several occasions, the undead army, which had barely climbed the ramparts, was driven back by the defenders.

Especially the Expedition Knight by Fulcard’s side, wearing a Golden Fire Dragon Cross Helmet, was exceptionally valiant beyond common measure. When a Bloodthirsty Celestial Ghost descended from the sky to attack the garrison on the wall, this Expedition Knight slew the Bloodthirsty Celestial Ghost with a single strike.

Fulcard’s presence on the front lines inspired the entire castle’s morale. He drew his longsword: ”Fire the cannons! Soldiers! Destroy the undead army! Victory belongs to Montfort, for the Lady and the King, for Brittania!”

Dozens of cannons on the castle fired continuously, the sizzling of ignited fuses and the pungent smell of black powder ringing one after another. Amidst the roar of countless cannons, solid shots fell into the undead array, throwing the entire undead formation into chaos, especially as the towering Tomb Evil Ghosts fell one after another, greatly reducing the pressure on the front lines.

”For Montfort! Soldiers, counterattack! Where are my catapults?” Fulcard led a charge to the front lines in combat; the Duke himself was a powerful Kingdom Knight. He swung his sword, slicing a zombie that had just climbed onto the rampart into two, filthy blood and flesh splattering across his face. However, the Duke ignored the pleas of his Personal Guard Knights asking him to retreat. Duke of Montfort shouted loudly, ”That’s the siege hammer! Destroy it! Destroy it!”

”Adjust the angle!” Montfort Duchy’s army did not fight alone; many migrants from the Empire were very willing to lend them a hand. Due to Montfort Duchy and the Empire’s long-term trade, the relationship between this Duchy and the Empire was excellent. In addition to spending a fortune to import outdated artillery from the Empire, the Empire’s residents here also took up arms to join the battle, most wielding only a scimitar and a fire cannon, with a few holding long halberds, sword and shield, and long-barreled fire cannons. They shouted angrily to release their might, and retired engineers and musketeers from the Empire, along with Brittania’s peasant archers, poured forth powder and arrow showers. Free People Corps and Peasant Infantry Corps repeatedly knocked the tide-like undead offensives off the ramparts.

High on the wall, over a dozen giant catapults and cannons aimed at the massive siege hammer being carried forwards by the undead. This siege hammer was very rudimentary, yet covered in many undead magic curse seals. Under Kemler’s power, this siege hammer was thoroughly reinforced.

Eight Tomb Evil Ghosts were pushing the siege hammer forward. The rotten metal at the tip, blessed by dark green undead magic, made Fulcard’s heart tremble with fear. He would never allow this siege hammer to reach the castle gate: ”Fire, soldiers, shoot at the Tomb Evil Ghosts’ legs!”

The soldiers on the wall loudly responded, the defenders’ firepower fully concentrated on the siege hammer, even the peasant archers on the sides scrambling to ignite arrows from their quivers and fire them.

The Tomb Evil Ghosts had thick hides and flesh; facing old muskets and peasant archers’ shots, they barely felt any pain. Even if one or two Tomb Evil Ghosts fell, those behind quickly filled in.

At this moment, a row of cannons on the wall fired. Several cannons finished loading, aside from one unfortunate cannon that misfired and went silent completely, the remaining cannons shot seven or eight rounds towards the siege hammer.

”Hoo~” These black solid rounds headed directly towards the siege hammer, emitting a subtle sound in the air. Watching from the Central Army, Kemler’s eyes narrowed as he loudly chanted a spell: ”Day of the Undead, all things wither, by the command of all spirits, heed my time!”

”Fourth Ring Magic, Wall of Bones!”

A short wall, composed of countless eerie white bones, emerged in front of the siege hammer. Solid rounds struck the short wall, creating several large holes, shattering the magically assembled bones into countless pieces.

The siege hammer remained intact under Kemler’s protection, Kemler was about to signal for the siege hammer to advance when two stones flying from above the castle entered his view.

The counterweight wheels of the catapult turned, the launched boulders bypassing the Wall of Bones, slamming heavily into the siege hammer’s upper part. The simple wooden structure was shattered by the impact, along with a Tomb Evil Ghost being hit, turning into a nauseating lump of flesh.

”Hm! Lucky shot.” Kemler snorted coldly, shaking his head, turning his back on the Central Army. Mathew Bade witnessed everything, remaining silent throughout. Seeing Kemler leave, he turned to go as well.

High above the walls echoed cries of victory. Fulcard and his Personal Guard Knights quickly mounted horses, launching a charge along the walls. Relying on textbook knight charges, the defenders finally repelled the Skeleton Warriors and Zombies who ascended the ramparts using makeshift wooden ladders. As the last Skeleton Warrior was defeated and thrown down the wall, the Ancient Tomb Legion, having lost the siege hammer, was forced to retreat.
