SSS- Rank: I awakened a 100,000 Roulette Return System

Chapter 42: Chapter 42: The Apex Coalition

”Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.” — Theodore Roosevelt

---

Zenith Vanguard Academy taught its first lesson before the first bell even rang. The lesson was simple: everyone had a place in the food chain.

The campus covered the entire platform facing the Spire. White stone terraces were connected by bridges of light, and every wall carried a Merit board.

The huge slate screens ranked every student by the points they had earned. Their scores updated every hour, glowing softly in the morning light like a stock market that never closed.

First-years walked through the terraces in their grey uniforms. Older students watched them from balconies and training halls.

The Academy allowed student factions but taxed them instead of banning them. Everyone understood why.

In a place where everything depended on Merit Points, powerful groups would always rise to prey on the weak.

Joel walked to his first assessment with his hood down and his hands in his pockets. Along the way, he studied the people around him.

•••

The Meteor Hall was a huge, round chamber that hummed softly.

White stone galleries surrounded the assessment area at its center. Above them, twelve meteor cores floated near the ceiling. Each was as big as a wagon and older than the Spire.

Their power bent gravity, creating visible ripples in the air around them.

The air inside the hall felt heavy. A deep hum filled the room.

VMMMMMMM.

The sound was so low that the first-years felt it in their chests more than they heard it.

They stood in rows beneath the floating meteor cores. At the center of the floor, a resonance crystal sat on a pedestal, waiting to test them.

The crystal assessed each student one at a time, and it always gave an honest result. That was the whole point of the test.

[FLESH-GUIDE (F), LEVEL 1.]

When Joel’s turn came, the crystal’s result appeared on the public slate in grey letters.

The galleries had spent three weeks hearing stories about him. Now, they reacted like a crowd watching a firework that failed to explode.

Laughter broke out in the second-year section and spread through the hall.

Joel stood still, wearing a bored expression. He studied the laughter with interest. It was different from the laughter he had heard in Caelmont.

These people were annoyed because they had believed the rumours about him and now felt foolish for it.

Only one corner of the gallery did not laugh.

Odette Bellamy stood at the rail with eleven other first-years who had been in the deep quadrant the night the sky tore.

The twelve stood shoulder to shoulder as laughter filled the hall. They had seen what Joel could do, and they knew the truth.

Odette stared at the public slate as it labelled him Level 1. Her face burned with anger, like a witness being called a liar in open court.

The practical assessment followed the reading.

Brass and Core-glass golems rose from the floor in neat rows. Each construct was matched to the candidate’s grade.

Every first-year had one minute to fight a middle-tier construct and earn a score for the placement boards.

During his minute, Joel blocked three attacks, dodged twice, and landed one clean strike. He spent most of the time doing very little.

The assessors recorded their scores, and Joel’s result landed almost exactly in the middle of the year group.

He later confirmed this with some pride. Hitting the exact middle was harder than it looked, and he had now done it in two different cities.

[Ding!]

[Assessment logged: MEDIAN. Public file consistency: maintained.]

[System Note: the house is reliably unremarkable, and it works very hard at it.]

•••

The recruiters found Joel at lunch. They came one after another.

The Meridian Exchange sent two well-dressed second-years carrying contracts. They offered him a stipend, connections, and a signing bonus. In return, they wanted a share of his future Merit Points and his signature on four pages of legal terms.

Joel turned them down.

The Dawnward Order came next. Two sincere-looking healers in white sashes offered him brotherhood, purpose, and prayer sessions in their shared dormitory.

Joel declined.

The Apex Coalition didn’t send recruiters. It sent collectors.

Two of them approached Joel’s table. One was a broad fourth-year with a thick neck, built like an enforcer. The other was slim and carried a ledger.

Both wore the Coalition’s black iron pin, shaped like an eight-pointed star.

They sat across from Joel without asking permission.

”Iron tier, outer city, no faction,” the slim student said, opening his ledger. ”That means you pay us thirty percent of your Merit Points, and we get first choice of any salvage you collect.

Everyone without a faction pays the same fee. It’s not personal, and you can’t negotiate it. Besides, it’s cheaper than the alternative.”

”What alternative?” Joel asked calmly.

”Quarters,” the broad one said.

”No,” Joel replied, returning to his soup.

The two men exchanged a look. Then the slim one wrote something in his ledger and drew a box around it.

They left without hurrying, confident that their organization had handled thousands of refusals and always collected in the end.

Joel had to admit, with some respect, that a protection racket that kept proper records was the most honest form of government he had encountered in this world.

The storm arrived twenty minutes later.

•••

Victor Kole didn’t just enter the mess hall. The room seemed to make space for him.

The conversations near the doors stopped first. Then the silence spread from table to table.

Joel looked up from his soup and studied the newcomer from head to toe. Reading people had become a habit.

Victor was tall, with the build of a fencer and the broad shoulders of a swimmer.

He wore the Academy’s black and silver uniform like it had been tailored just for him. It was fitted, clean, and without a single crease. His white-gold hair was cut short, and his storm-grey eyes were striking in the way only expensive things could be.

A storm-brand gauntlet covered his right forearm up to the elbow. Pale energy ran through the dark metal, and it hummed softly.

HUMMMMM.

The sound was steady, like thunder waiting to break.

Three ranked seniors followed him, each wearing a faction pin and watching the room carefully.

Victor walked between the tables as people moved aside. His raised chin and confident stride looked practiced, as if he’d rehearsed them in front of a mirror.

”You’re the Caelmont anomaly,” Victor said as he reached Joel’s table.

”I’ve heard the story from six different people, and I’ve read your assessment results. One of them is lying. I don’t care which. You’re interesting either way, and I like collecting interesting things.”

”I am flattered,” Joel said.

”The Apex Coalition is the largest faction in the Academy, and membership comes with certain expectations,” Victor said.

His storm-grey eyes studied Joel, taking in his hood, his soup, his average scores, and his Iron-tier placement.

”You’ll join our faction, wear our pin, and give us thirty percent of your Merit Points. We’ll also get first claim on your salvage. I hear you’ve already met my collectors.

”In return, you’ll get shorter queues, access to better training halls, and more time in the portals. Nobody in this Academy will dare touch you, because nobody touches what belongs to me.”

He said the last four words as casually as a greeting.

The mess hall had gone completely silent. Everyone was listening.

Joel set down his spoon.

Joel used the silence to assess the threat. He assessed everything, and this was no different.

The results came back in clear.

Victor Kole was Level 35, nine levels above Joel. He had an A-rank class and the perfect footwork of someone trained by aristocrats. His body was free of scars, which told Joel he’d never faced anything that could truly hurt him.

The gauntlet hummed as it slowly recharged. Joel could count the cycle. Victor’s footwork was perfect, but it was limited to what the Academy had taught him.

Nyx stood in the shadow of a serving pillar ten feet away, her blades folded.

[Ding!]

[Observe: Victor Kole. Level 35. Class: Storm-Caller (A-Rank).]

[Aegis Frame: hostile element — electrical. Kinetic absorption: INAPPLICABLE.]

[Threat assessment: genuine.]

[System Note: the house has met a game its favorite tool cannot rig. The house recommends not being struck.]

’There it is,’ Joel thought. The answer came to him in one clear, cold sentence, just as it always did.

’Lightning. The Frame’s one weakness. The same flaw the anomaly’s beam passed through, now backed by a nine-level gap and a founding family name.

He can hurt me in a fair fight, especially in public. I could kill him in any shadow in this hall. Both options would cost me more than I’d gain.

So I use the same strategy I used in the study, the colosseum, and the jungle: refuse the offer and keep the ledger open.’

He looked up from his assessment and into the storm-grey eyes, and he gave Victor Kole the flat, unblinking, dead-eyed stare of a man who had stood under a falling anomaly and found it merely noisy.

”No.”

The word was small and the silence around it was enormous.

”...No,” Victor repeated, as if testing the word.

His chin lowered slightly, and his patience began to wear thin.

”You’re Level 1, from the outer city, living in an Iron-tier hall. I just offered you the only umbrella in the rain, and you’re choosing to get wet.”

”I’ve been rained on before,” Joel said. ”The last man who told me everyone had to pay his fee is now answering the Inquisition’s questions in orbit, Mr. Kole. I wasn’t impressed with his collection methods.”

Somewhere in the gallery above, a fork struck a plate with a small clink.

The hall fell completely silent.

Victor stood still for a moment. Then the storm made his argument for him.

KRAKA-BOOM.

The gauntlet released a small burst of lightning above the table.

Every lamp in the mess hall went dark at once. The smell of ozone filled the air, and the pressure of a Level 35 A-rank spread through the room.

First-years pressed themselves against the walls. Even the senior students stepped back.

Two hundred students held their breath in the darkness.

Then, from the center of the room, came a small, dry sound.

Joel picked up his spoon.

The lights came back, and the grey boy was eating his soup.

Victor Kole stared down at Joel for a long moment.

Then he smiled.

”Mark him,” Victor told the slim collector without looking away from Joel. ”Special terms. The Coalition collects from everyone, whether they’re from the outer city or not. We collect in Merit Points or in dignity. And I’ll enjoy collecting from you.”

He straightened his collar, and his followers gathered around him again.

”You’ll come knocking on my door before the term ends. They always do.”

”Your door is safe from me,” Joel replied calmly.

Victor walked out of the mess hall, his thunder fading behind him. Slowly, the two hundred students began to breathe again.

•••

Joel left the mess hall while the silence still lingered. Whispers started behind him before the door even closed.

A first-year had just told Victor Kole no in front of two hundred witnesses. Already, the story was becoming the Academy’s second legend about the grey boy.

The portal office stood at the end of the terrace, lined with queues and booking boards. Joel presented his plate at the private window his enrollment had earned him.

”Fourth Stratum,” he said. ”The Iron Wastes. Solo clearance, earliest available window.”

[Ding!]

[Portal booking confirmed: The Iron Wastes (Fourth Stratum), dawn departure.]

[System Note: the house has opened its first account in the big city. The interest rates are, as predicted, wicked.]
