SSS- Rank: I awakened a 100,000 Roulette Return System

Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Blueprint of Evolution

”What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly.” — Richard Bach

The portal did not take Joel to the Antechamber.

It took him into a room between rooms.

Joel understood the Spire’s logic before the light had even left his eyes.

The vestibule was a ten-by-ten room made of breathing black stone.

There were no windows. Only a sealed gate stood in the far wall.

Beside it was a flat pedestal with a slot exactly the size of an iron candidate plate.

The air carried the same deep harmonic note as the Tear, the wall veins pulsed with their slow pale light, and the whole chamber had the atmosphere of an airlock, which was exactly what it was.

The Spire did not dump its survivors back into the world, because the Spire processed them first, the way a hospital processes a discharge before anyone is permitted to argue with the paperwork.

A flat voice spoke from the gate itself, indifferent as ever.

[Return processing initiated. Solo clearance detected. Candidate log flagged for review. Gate release pending candidate readiness.]

’Pending my readiness,’ Joel thought, reading the sentence twice. ’The tower will hold this door for as long as I ask it to, in the one room in this world where nothing is allowed to kill me.’

He sat down against the humming wall and pulled his status screen, and he did the accounting, because five chips was more money than he had ever held in either of his lives, and a gambler with money is at his most dangerous and his most stupid in exactly that order.

The screen laid the problem out without mercy. His base attributes read Strength 12.4, Agility 14, Physique 22.4, and Mana 4, and next to each of them sat the rented numbers of the Ash-Spine Halberd, which was the entire difference between an elite and a support class with a nice stick.

Equipment was borrowed power, and a lender could repossess, and a broken weapon had nearly gotten him killed twice in one week.

Worse than the numbers was the shape of them, because the Wheel multiplied whatever existed, and a multiplier applied to a small number stayed a small number, and the [Flesh-Guide] chassis capped every future purchase he would ever make.

His mana would never power a lantern, his agility would never scale past what micro-adaptations dripped into it, and the class written into his flesh had a regenerative trick and nothing else to govern.

’The class lives in the body,’ Joel thought, working the logic the way he used to work a dosage. ’The Tear read my palm and priced my genetics, so if the genetics are rewritten, the class that manages them has to be rewritten too, because no F-rank framework can govern a chassis it was never built to run.’

He had bought Option A and survived the install.

He had bought Option B twice and cashed both refunds.

That left the third door—the expensive one. The one that didn’t change the software running on the platform.

It changed the platform itself.

Before he knocked on it, he asked the system the question that had been sitting in his ledger since the gorge.

’Can points be wagered together on a single spin?’

[Wager stacking confirmed. Additional Fate Points on a single spin raise the Wheel’s tier ceiling and improve the odds of high multipliers.]

Joel weighed it out like a man splitting a vial.

Three points on a single roll meant a ceiling the wheel had never shown him.

It also meant that a bad landing could burn most of his fortune on one mutation.

And a pharmacist never spends his entire stock. The emergency dose might be the one that keeps the patient alive.

He kept two points in reserve, one for a healing crisis and one for an exit, and he pushed the other three across the felt.

[Ding!]

[Fate Points Wagered: 3. The Wheel of Fate spins...]

Click... click... click... click... clack.

[Result: x20,000 Multiplier Achieved.]

The number hung there, twice the miracle that had saved his life on the dunes, and Joel sat very still in the humming room and looked at it the way a man looks at a loaded weapon he has just been handed.

[Ding!]

[Multiplier x20,000 Locked.]

[Please select an application for Fate Energy:]

[A) Skill Proficiency - (Apply to a known skill or unlearned Skill Book)]

[B) Cellular Regeneration - (Apply to physical trauma for instant/sustained healing)]

[C) Body Evolution - (Apply to genetic structure for permanent stat/trait mutation)]

[Awaiting User Input...]

’C,’ Joel said, and the system accepted it before the thought had finished crossing the dark.

[Selection C Confirmed: Body Evolution.]

[Target: Host Base Genetics.]

[Applying x20,000 Evolutionary Catalyst...]

[Warning: Extreme physical discomfort imminent.]

The warning was, by far, the most dishonest sentence the system had ever printed.

Joel had about four seconds to appreciate that fact before his marrow caught fire.

The rewrite began where all blueprints begin: in the foundation.

And the foundation was bone.

His skeleton was examined from the inside, joint by joint. Wherever the system found the body’s original design, it marked it for removal.

His femurs shattered first, one after another, like dropped test tubes.

Then new bones grew through the wreckage.

They were denser. Heavier. Dark beneath the skin, with a strange sheen that looked like Rift-Iron.

His tendons were unwound and rebuilt with finer fibers.

His heart was reconstructed to a design no pharmacy on Earth could support.

His muscles were stripped from the frame and rebuilt in layers that no seventeen-year-old support class should have been able to carry.

Joel rode through it the only way he knew how, which was as a spectator behind his own eyes, a pharmacist watching the worst compounding error of his career and taking notes through the screaming.

His body remembered every adaptation it had gained so far, the small gains from sixty-nine carcasses, the forced upgrades, and the scar tissue from a week of being torn apart.

It used all of them as raw material.

Every gain he had earned was folded into the new body, the way a bank rolls old accounts into a merger.

He lost consciousness twice.

The system recorded each blackout like a nurse noting a dropped chart.

Around him, the black stone of the vestibule cracked in a spiderweb pattern, spreading from the spots where his hands gripped the floor.

Sometime in the third hour, the body he had lived in for two lives was finally torn apart.

But what rose from the wreckage was not finished yet.

The F-rank framework that had once governed his body had become the last outdated part of the machine.

[Ding!]

[Evolution Complete.]

[Base Strength +45.6. Base Physique +51.6. Base Agility +27. Base Mana +6.]

[F-rank class ’Flesh-Guide’ is incompatible with the evolved chassis.]

[Class mutation in progress...]

[Ding! Class Evolved!]

[You are now: ’Aegis Juggernaut’ (Epic, Unique).]

[Class Trait Acquired: ’Aegis Frame’ (Passive) - kinetic energy from physical impacts is absorbed into the chassis as Charge. Charge reinforces the frame passively and may be discharged through a held weapon.]

[Class Trait Acquired: ’Juggernaut Vitality’ (Passive) - former ’Flesh Mending’, re-issued at Epic tier. Regeneration now scales with class vitality.]

Joel stood up out of the cracked stone, and the standing was the first test, because his boots pressed prints into the Spire’s floor.

The room felt smaller, which was a lie the new body told the old eyes, and the air had acquired a weight around him, a faint pressure that made the wall veins flicker when he moved, the aura of something that the First Stratum had never needed to evolve a word for.

He spent twenty minutes learning the volume controls, breathing the pressure inward the way the form gathered momentum, until the hum of the room settled and the stone stopped complaining under his feet.

[Ding!]

[Structural restraint achieved. Aura suppressed to passive emission.]

The second test was the debris.

A cracked section of stone had broken loose from the wall during the rebuild. Joel pried a chunk about the size of a brick free and dropped it from head height onto his bare forearm.

He wanted to see what happened.

The stone hit his skin and stopped.

No pain. No mark.

The impact sank into his bones as a low hum, like a tuning fork struck once. The force settled inside his body and waited there, like spare change in a pocket.

[Ding!]

[Aegis Frame: 340 units absorbed. Host damage: 0.]

[System Note: the wall would like its brick back.]

Joel laughed, shortly, in the empty room, and then he got to work on the disguise, because the mask mattered more now than it had ever mattered.

He wrapped the crescent head of the Ash-Spine Halberd in sinew cord and covered its Silver-tier edge with Crawler chitin.

By the time he finished, the weapon looked like battlefield salvage—a dead man’s junk hanging from a dead man’s shoulder.

He left the week-old dried blood exactly where it was.

He was still the boy the ledger had buried, and the city beyond that gate would keep his file exactly as written.

But the body beneath that file had become something the Mayor’s money could never buy a sword for.

[================================]

He looked at the balance of it, the borrowed numbers finally dwarfed by the owned ones, and he read the truth of the outline twice, which was that he was no longer a healing trick wearing armor, because the baseline itself had moved into the realm of elites, and the file that said F-rank had become the biggest lie in Caelmont.

Joel pressed his plate into the pedestal slot, and the gate spoke one final sentence into the humming dark.

[Gate release authorized. Candidate, proceed.]

The seam of pale light split down the middle and began to open, and beyond it, vast and hollow and almost empty at this hour, the Antechamber waited with its silent consoles and its breathing stone, and somewhere inside it, a lamp was still burning over one last stack of data logs.
