SSS- Rank: I awakened a 100,000 Roulette Return System

Chapter 18: Chapter 18: The Tamer’s Gambit

”One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” — old proverb

The morning had gone to Albright’s office, and the debrief had lasted exactly four minutes.

She had handed him his class schedule without ceremony, informed him that the academy expected the ghost of the Carrow boy at his desk by the next morning bell, and repeated her three terms for the alliance, which were to be grey, to be boring, and to stay alive enough to bury the administration properly.

Joel had agreed to all three, and then he had walked down the hill through the festival wreckage of the upper city and spent the rest of the day in the Rustward, because a man building a counting room does not build it where the neighbors count.

He found the safehouse an hour past noon, three streets up the cinder slopes, above a foundry that had died before he was born.

The boarding row was a stack of salvage cabins bolted onto the old shell.

The landlady was a broad woman named Hetty, with forearms built by thirty years of stacking salvage and a grey braid as thick as a mooring rope.

An iron ring of keys hung from her hip, and she touched it the way other women touched prayer beads.

She counted his fifteen credits twice, asked him nothing at all, and delivered the rules of the house, which were that there were no rules so long as the rent arrived on time and the noise stayed ordinary.

The room itself was a pharmacist’s dream of defensible real estate. It had one door with an honest lock, iron shutters over a single window, a cot, a table, and a gap in the smog ceiling through which the Zenith Spire was visible at night.

Joel set his satchel on the table, laid the credit boxes beside it, and took inventory of the day, which now read two thousand eight hundred credits after rent and supplies, a Silver-tier weapon wrapped in chitin, a black band on his wrist, and a grey pamphlet that had cost him two coins out of a junk crate.

Five days inside the Spire had cost him a single evening in Caelmont, and he had been doing that arithmetic all day, because the tower paid time the way it paid everything else, at exchange rates that were posted nowhere.

A boy could sit in a classroom by day, pass through the academy gates at evening bell, and come back before morning having aged a week, and nobody in a city that had closed his file would ever think to open it.

’The city filed me under finished,’ Joel thought, pulling the lamp closer. ’Closed files are the cheapest real estate in any town.’

•••

The pamphlet read like a prescription written by a drunk, and Joel read it the way he had once read compounding formulas, line by line, looking for the active ingredient.

[Bind Corpse] required three gestures of channeled mana, draped over dead tissue and sealed with a binding loop.

The entire implementation was garbage from start to finish.

The loop was sloppy, which produced the one percent success rate, and it leaked, which produced the minutes-long duration, and it could hold about a teacup of animation, which produced the ceiling of one weak undead.

Everything wrong with the spell was a cost problem rather than a concept problem, and the concept itself, resurrection plus binding, had never been priced at F-rank anywhere in the market, because no guild in history had been stupid enough to file it there.

He learned it the standard way, which was to read it until the reading was no longer necessary. The pages warmed under his hands, the ink lifted off the cheap paper in a faint grey mist, and the system processed the transfer like a pharmacist processing a return.

[Ding!]

[Skill Book ’Bind Corpse’ consumed.]

[You have learned: ’Bind Corpse’ (F) - Lv. 1.]

The pamphlet stayed behind on the table as a husk of blank pages, and Joel went out through the iron shutters and down the dead foundry’s back stairs to collect a test subject.

The Rustward provided one within minutes, because the district’s drains coughed up dead vermin daily, and he returned with a fresh grey ash-rat and laid it out on the table with the professional detachment of a man who had spent the past week being the test subject instead.

He spent two mana, closed the loop, and cast.

The rat stood up on legs that had forgotten their original order, dragged itself through a half circle toward him with clouded eyes, considered the ceiling with an expression of profound administrative confusion, and collapsed back into being dead. The entire performance lasted nine seconds.

[Ding!]

[Bind Corpse (F) executed. Result: SUCCESS.]

[Bound Entity: Ash-Rat (deceased). Duration: 9 seconds.]

[System Note: the skill has performed at the ceiling of its specifications.]

Joel sat down and looked at the rat for a long moment, because the result had just proven something the market had never bothered to test.

The odds were never the insult, since one percent was merely a gamble, and the insult was the product, because even at its best the spell sold nine seconds of a dead rat for two mana.

The guilds were right to call it trash, and the bookshops were right to shelve it in the junk crate, and every one of them was right for the wrong reason, because they had priced the implementation and never once looked at the architecture underneath it.

And the Wheel had never once asked the market for its opinion, because the Wheel multiplied implementations, and implementations were only arithmetic.

He checked the balance, and the balance was two Fate Points, and he spent a full minute on the reserve argument before he spent anything else.

The old rule, from the Antechamber and the cave, had been to keep one point for a healing crisis.

The Epic chassis had quietly repealed that law, because the body itself was now the emergency dose, and a man with Juggernaut Vitality could afford to convert his entire liquid reserve into infrastructure.

’Double or nothing,’ Joel thought, and he pushed both points across the felt.

[Ding!]

[Fate Points Wagered: 2. The Wheel of Fate spins...]

Click... click... click... click... clack.

[Result: x50,000 Multiplier Achieved.]

The number sat in the lamplight like a loaded weapon, five times the multiplier that had rewritten his skeleton, and the largest figure the Wheel had ever shown him.

[Ding!]

[Multiplier x50,000 Locked.]

[Please select an application for Fate Energy:]

[A) Skill Proficiency - (Apply to a known skill or unlearned Skill Book)]

[B) Cellular Regeneration - (Apply to physical trauma for instant/sustained healing)]

[C) Body Evolution - (Apply to genetic structure for permanent stat/trait mutation)]

[Awaiting User Input...]

’A,’ Joel answered. ’Target: Bind Corpse.’

[Selection A Confirmed: Skill Proficiency.]

[Target: ’Bind Corpse’ (F) - Lv. 1.]

[Applying x50,000 Proficiency...]

This install arrived as text instead of muscle.

The formula hung in his mind like a page on a lit desk, and the first thousand repetitions simply cleaned the loop, tightening the sloppy strokes.

The next ten thousand rebuilt the loop’s geometry entirely, and the ten thousand after that refined the rebuild past anything the original author had gestured at, and the proficiency kept arriving, and somewhere in the flood the F-rank scaffolding began to strain.

[Ding!]

[’Bind Corpse’ has reached MAX Level.]

[Proficiency overflow detected. Skill is mutating to accommodate excess Fate Energy...]

[Ding! System Override.]

[Mundane magic cannot contain this proficiency level.]

What followed was not training. Joel watched the laws of the little spell get deleted and re-derived in real time, and he understood each amendment as it passed.

The duration clause was struck out entirely. The one-undead cap came down like a wall being replaced by a gate.

The binding loop, which had been a knot of string closing over dead meat, was re-drafted into a forge, and somewhere in the re-drafting he was made to understand the difference between animating a corpse and binding a soul, the way a student is made to understand the difference between a label and a diagnosis.

The lamp guttered, although the room held no draft. His own shadow on the wall behind him deepened, took on a dimension it had never owned, and settled.

[Ding! Skill Mutated!]

[You have learned: ’Fate-Bound Legion’ (Mythic).]

[Fate-Bound Legion (Mythic) - Lv. 1: resurrects a boss-tier entity defeated by the host as a soul-bound Vanguard. Success rate: 100%. Loyalty: absolute (soul-bound). The bound are granted sentience, retain their combat instincts, and evolve alongside the host. Vanguards may be withdrawn into the host’s shadow-space.]

[Binding requirement: the Wheel adjudicates only kills it has witnessed. Only entities defeated by the host in lethal encounter qualify.]

[Current Vanguard Limit: 0/1.]

[Cost: soul-forge ignition. Scales with target grade.]

[System Note: the library retracts its earlier statement.]

Joel sat with it for a long time, the way he used to sit with a diagnosis that changed the entire treatment plan, because the arithmetic had just changed everything.

Every landlord in the Spire was now payroll. The Wheel had been paying him for the kills all week, and it had apparently been maintaining a referral program the entire time, because from tonight forward every boss he defeated was not merely a payout but a recruitment opportunity, a dead elite with combat instincts, sentience, and a loyalty clause that no human employee in either of his lives had ever honored so completely.

He thought of the Chieftain first, four meters of crimson muscle cooling in a bone arena a stratum away, and the logistics killed the fantasy before it finished forming, because walking a gore-ape through the Caelmont gates would end the masquerade in a single afternoon.

The recruit needed to be a shape that could hide, and the First Stratum’s management was all shoulders.

’Which means the Second Stratum,’ Joel thought, and every child of Caelmont knew its name the way they knew the first.

The Weeping Caverns, a bioluminescent maze of venom flora and things with too many legs, a floor that hunted in the dark, and therefore the ideal ground for interviewing an army that could live inside a shadow.

[=================================]

He blew out the lamp and stood a moment at the shutter gap, where the Spire hung in the smog with its slow wheel of storm, patient as always.

Tomorrow he would sit at a desk and be grey, and be boring, and let the whole city keep its closed file.

And after evening bell, he intended to go and interview some staff.
