Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Checkmate in the Dark

”Everyone sees what you appear to be; few experience what you really are.” — Niccolò Machiavelli

The darkness of Caelmont belonged to Nyx now. She moved through it smoothly, just like she used to move through the deep caves of her old home.

She traveled in the shadows between the streetlamps along the merchant street, passing closed market stalls and warm night bakeries. She studied the city as she moved. Thirty years of keeping ledgers in the dark had taught her that everything valuable could be seen from above if you knew how to look. The upper city slept behind iron fences, lit by bright Rift-Core lamps. She noted every light, knowing that bright lights were an expensive habit for men who feared the dark. In her experience, fear always meant someone was hiding something valuable.

The hill rose up from the sleeping city, and the Mayor’s estate sat glowing at the top.

Nyx stopped in the deep shade of a hedge line across the street. She watched the house patiently, having set aside the entire night for this job. Stone walls three meters high surrounded the property, topped with iron spikes. Inside, Core-lamps lit the grounds every ten paces. But the dark spaces between those islands of light belonged to her—a connected path of shadows stretching from hedge to hedge all the way to the study windows.

Guard dogs walked the grounds with their handlers. Their sharp noses checked the air, but Nyx did not move through the air. The shadow-space beneath the physical world had no smell, no heat, and no body weight. The hounds would walk right past her and notice nothing.

’The wall lamps are his real defense,’ Nyx thought, moving slowly along the hedge line. ’The Mayor bought light the way old cities bought archers. His magical security traps react to mana and warm blood. But I am cold silk and shadow. He spent forty years defending against living threats, not something like me.’

She climbed over the stone wall through the shadow of a pillar, and the estate swallowed her silently.

Checking the inside of the house was an organized job. She followed the Architect’s instructions to read the entire house before opening a single drawer.

The outer guards were city watchmen on loan. They walked set patrol routes on fixed schedules, so predictable she could time her breath by them. The house staff slept in the east wing behind locked doors.

The strongroom sat in the basement behind an iron grille lit by a Core-lamp. She counted eleven strongboxes through the bars. One box was freshly delivered, bearing the seal of an outside mercenary group. That meant the Mayor had already started replacing his dead Hounds. She noted the box count and seal for her report.

The wine cellar held nothing useful except expensive wine, which she noted with brief regret before moving on.

The study sat at the top of the stairs in the west wing. The hallway stairs were lit all night, guarded by the Mayor’s personal bodyguards. This was the main barrier she had to analyze, because the two men guarding the door were skilled professionals.

Both guards were Level 30. They stood guard like veteran fighters working for rich employers. Corvo was the taller one, thin and sharp, wearing chainmail under servant clothes. He carried a longsword and watched the stairs with his back to the wall. Brann was heavy, bearded, and scarred, with an old garrison tattoo on his arm. He paced between the stairs and the study door. Every fifteen minutes, Brann opened the window at the end of the hall to smoke cheap tobacco, accepting the health risk as part of life. They were former killers acting as bodyguards, but they were the best guards in the house.

Nyx watched the hallway from the shadow beneath a window seat for two full guard cycles. She quickly learned their routine. Brann’s smoke break at the open window lasted four minutes. For three of those minutes, Corvo left his post at the stairs to join him, since old soldiers liked company. During those three minutes, the study door stood completely unguarded. The lamps left a clear path of shadow running uninterrupted from the window seat to the door. The way to the Mayor’s private papers was wide open for the length of a cigarette break.

’For thirty years I hunted fools who stayed in the light,’ Nyx thought, opening her sharp blades carefully. ’The rich still have not learned that shadows form a road, and roads are where the collector walks.’

She did not kill them during the smoke break, because she needed that same clear road to exit safely.

She killed them after the window was closed and both men returned to their posts. She targeted Corvo first at the stairs, since help would come from that direction.

She stepped out from the shadow under the window seat, crossing the dark spaces directly to the stairs. Corvo noticed the shadow blocking the lamp behind him a split second before her blades struck. The professional in him understood what was happening, but he had no time to react. She drove two blades through his collarbones from behind. The sound was muffled by his chainmail and body. She lowered his body softly to the floor, leaving the hallway quiet and untouched.

Brann heard a faint sound and turned from the study door, his hand reaching for his sword. Nyx appeared right in front of him. The last thing the guard saw was a figure of shadow with glowing purple eyes. Before he could shout an alarm, her second pair of blades cut him down. She leaned his body against the wall beside the door, placing his hand in a position that made him look like he had been paused mid-salute.

The study door had a magical Inner City lock, but she did not bother picking it. Instead, she slipped through the shadow of the window shutter directly to the dark space under the Mayor’s desk.

The room was full of records and papers. The safe sat hidden behind a portrait of Mayor Sterling in his official robes. The painting was on hinged frames, and the lock was a combination dial with ten thousand possible codes. Four of the numbers showed clear wear from the Mayor’s fingers. That reduced the combinations to a short list. The Architect had already told her the code was likely his election year, and he was right. The safe unlocked easily.

Inside lay the records of a careful criminal, and she sorted them by value:

First came the tribute ledgers—an encrypted cipher-slate tracking quarterly Rift-Core shipments. The Mayor had recorded the true weight counts next to the fake numbers sent upstream to Aethelgard. Eleven years of stolen tribute were recorded on that slate. The encryption used standard Inner City methods, making it easy to open later. She took the entire slate without disturbing the dust around it.

Second was a stack of letters between Sterling and an Exchange broker. She took the letter stamped with the mercenary company’s seal.

Third was an envelope prepared for the morning courier, addressed to the Warden of the Registry. She opened it carefully. Inside was a single written line about the upcoming academy trials: candidate Carrow, J., [Flesh-Guide], was assigned to Quadrant Nine in the deep Labyrinth, with his rescue beacon marked as ”already recovered” at the start.

Nyx read the sentence twice, her purple eyes glowing darkly.

’So the old man has already planned the boy’s death,’ she thought, resealing the envelope expertly. ’And the Architect plans ahead to turn that trap into his own victory. I like working for him.’

She put everything back in its exact place. She left behind two dead guards in a locked hallway without raising an alarm, having stolen the study’s secrets without leaving a single trace.

An hour before the morning bell, inside a dark barracks two miles away, a shadow opened between a bed and the wall. A cipher-slate, a sealed letter, and a mercenary contract slid out onto a sleeping boy’s blanket.

Joel Carrow sat up silently. His hands found the cipher-slate in the moonlight, and the System logged the items.

He turned the slate over with a slow, cold smile—the smile of a pharmacist holding the medical records of a man who had been stealing medicine for eleven years. Exposing the Mayor right now would cause a public scandal and an execution, but that would only pay off once. Blackmail, on the other hand, provided steady income. It could fund an army, buy a Null-Band, and secure a place in the Inner Cities. He could expose the Mayor later at his own convenience.

The game board was set.
