SSS- Rank: I awakened a 100,000 Roulette Return System

Chapter 26: Chapter 26: The Master & The Weapon

”I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” — William Ernest Henley, ”Invictus”

---

Joel sat down on the worn silk of the dead queen’s floor because standing was no longer a service his mana-drained body offered.

The soul-forge had taken everything, and the difference between an empty tank and a full life was now academic, so he ate the second half of his rations in the blue-green dark while the newest employee of the Carrow account stood watch over the nave with the stillness of furniture that could kill.

”Report your understanding of your condition,” Joel said at last

”I died,” Nyx said. ”The account of my death is the first entry in my new ledger. You pulled my roof down, you withstood my orchestra, and you killed me with my own stored force, which was clean work, and I respect clean work.”

The violet eyes did not blink. ”The forge bound me, and the binding is not a leash. I have inspected it from the inside, Architect, the way you would inspect a contract, and it does not take my judgment. It takes my side.”

”Elaborate on that difference,” Joel said.

”A leash decides where I go,” she said. ”A side decides where I stand. I was a queen for thirty years, and I kept what was mine, and I chose my ground, and my ground was my death, because I chose to fight you on it.”

Something moved through the silk-drawn voice that a pharmacist’s ear tagged, after a moment, as humor. ”You are the first thing in thirty years that has offered me a position rather than a meal.”

’That,’ Joel thought, ’is the single best reference letter I have ever received, and she has not even listed her skills yet.’

He tested the contract’s terms while he ate. He asked her what she could do, and she demonstrated the first half of the answer without moving from her spot, which was the shadow-step, a translocation between connected dark that moved her from one side of the nave to the other in the space between one drip of water and the next, folding through the dark like a needle through cloth.

The second half of the answer she demonstrated on the salvage pile, four dorsal blades fanning from her back and stripping a trophy plate into neat quarters in a single pass, unaimed, the way a man peels fruit from memory.

”Density of your darkness determines my reach,” she said. ”Your shadow, deep shade, night itself.

In full sun, I am an elegant corpse. I travel through shadow-space, and you carry its deepest anchor, because it lives behind you, Architect.

The binding parked my existence beside yours, and I can withdraw into it entirely, and time inside is not time outside.”

’She is a courier, a knife, and a vault,’ Joel wrote in the ledger of his mind. ’And the vault has a door only I can open.’

”State your intentions,” Nyx said, when the rationing and the cataloguing were finished, and it was not a request, because a queen did not request, she audited. ”A forger does not spend a x12,000 forge on a personal guard without a purpose, and purposes have shapes. What shape is yours?”

The tiredness had passed its peak, and Joel gave her the honest architecture, because an employee this expensive deserved the real blueprint and would smell any counterfeit in it.

”Revenge is the short-term shape,” he said. ”There is a mayor in this city who has hired assassins once and will try again, and a golden boy who poisoned his way into my class, and a girl who poured the tonic, and the revenge is a line item, not a mission.

It will be executed, and it will be executed quietly, and then it will be closed.” He looked at the dead nave around them, at her ledgers hanging in the dark.

”The long-term shape is sovereignty. I intend to own my own survival, in a world where survival is licensed, metered, and sold by people like Sterling, to people like me, for prices I cannot currently afford.

I am building a house that does not sell, does not leak, and does not need the city’s permission to stand. You are the first permanent staff.”

Nyx considered this with the stillness of thirty years of listening.

”Then the honest answer is that I have joined a startup,” she said. ”A small one. I was a queen of a silk economy, and the forger of my death is my first employer, and my employment terms are absolute, which is a better contract than any of my children ever offered me.”

The vestigial crown of lenses across her brow flickered, and the humor surfaced again, dry as the dark itself. ”State your standing orders, Architect, and I will tell you what they will cost you.”

”No killing inside the city,” Joel said. ”Not by my hand, not by yours, and not by anything I own. The Inquisition reads dead humans the way scanners read plates, and my house is not yet strong enough to be questioned.

Reconnaissance is standing order one. You were the best listener in this stratum, and you will be the best listener in Caelmont, and you will map the Ministerial hill, the garrison, the Sterling estate’s habits, staff, rotations, and its master’s schedule, and you will do it without leaving a single thread of silk behind. Standing order two is the archive.

Miss Albright holds the one honest console in the Spire’s Antechamber, and you will deliver to her, through me, anything the shadows of this city cough up. Standing order three is containment. Nobody learns what you are until I say the word, and the word comes last.”

”Understood,” Nyx said, and the blades along her back settled flat with the sound of a ledger closing. ”And my compensation, Architect?”

”You sleep in my shadow, and you evolve when I do,” Joel said. ”And when the house is sovereign, I will build you a dark of your own to hold.”

The violet eyes regarded him for a long, unblinking moment, and something in the set of the obsidian visor shifted that he was willing to file under approval.

”Acceptable,” she said. ”The night is mine, and the day is yours. I will hold your dark, Architect, and you will hold the ledger. We are in agreement.”

The walk out of the Weeping Caverns took the rest of the night.,

Nyx traveled the way she had always traveled, along the ceiling and through the connected dark, and Joel walked the silk roads below with his lamp lit, and the stratum let them pass, because the silk economy’s owner had changed and everything that hunted in the dark now hunted for him.

At the portal seam she asked, with the formality of a creature filing a change of address, what she should do about the daylight world above, and Joel gave her the answer he had spent the walk composing.

”You withdraw into the shadow-space at dawn, and you sleep behind me,” he said. ”You wake when I call, or when the dark is deep enough to move in, or when something threatens the house. The house is me, and I am the house.”

Ads by PubFuture The seam of light took them both, and the Antechamber processed the return at its flat mechanical leisure, and the scanner at the outer gate read a Level 1 Flesh-Guide in a hooded coat walking at a stroll into the grey hours of Caelmont morning, and it did not read the two and a half meters of obsidian and blade folded into the space behind his heart.

The city smelled of rain coming, and Joel walked the merchant avenue at an unhurried pace while the first shift belatedly awoke around him.

On the aqueduct wall, someone had already chalked a crude eight-legged glyph beside the word ’Grey’, and a pair of off-duty guards were arguing over whether the story was worth a credit bet, and the city’s rumor mill was busy minting its newest currency, an anonymous who killed mercenaries and hung them like laundry.

’Enjoy it while it is cheap,’ Joel told the rumor mill silently. ’The trials are in three days, and the price of the story goes up then.’

At the safehouse, he slept until noon, and the sleep was the deep black rest of a man with a vault in his shadow, and when he woke, he tested the withdrawal.

’Nyx.’

The dark behind him opened like a coat being taken off a hook.

”Architect,” said the night, standing in his room in the middle of the day.
