Chapter 27: Chapter 27: The Vanguard Academy Envoy

”Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” — Seneca

The trials arrived on the third morning, and Caelmont closed its shops for them.

The city colosseum was the oldest grand thing Caelmont owned, a great stone ring on the south hill that had been watching spectacles since before the Rift Fall was a anniversary, and by dawn it was dressed for its biggest show of the year.

Vanguard white and garrison blue hung from every tier, vendor stalls lined the approach road, and the candidates of the seventeenth year came up the hill in their academy uniforms with their families behind them, carrying their class plates like passports.

The Vanguard Academy Enrollment Trials convened only in the shadow of a Tear ceremony, and every hand gone up in the plaza weeks ago now descended on the colosseum, because the Inner City academies took their students from these games or from nowhere.

Proctor Harrison arrived before the Mayor did, and the order of arrival was its own sentence.

He came up the hill on foot with two adjutants and a locked case.

He wore the black and silver of the Zenith Vanguard, a half-cloak pinned to one shoulder.

He crossed the colosseum floor like a man inspecting a warehouse he intended to claim by contract.

The candidate desks were arranged in rows beneath the arches. Scanner crystals stood on brass stands at each one, while the running-order drum sat on the secretariat table with its slate board beside it.

Harrison checked every piece himself before allowing a single candidate through the gates.

”The Inner City does not inherit assessments,” he said to the secretariat, in a voice that carried on purpose. ”It conducts them. Every candidate of the year who presents a plate tests, or nobody tests, and the envoys of Aethelgard do not grade your mayor’s opinions.”

•••

Mayor Sterling’s opinion arrived an hour later, wearing its best coat.

Joel stood near the back of the second queue, in his washed academy uniform with his hood down and his class plate in his hand, and he watched the maneuvering from the cheap seats of a registration line, which was the best vantage in any building.

The Mayor entered through the VIP arch to warm applause, wearing his gold chain, four rings, and a wide, lifeless smile.

Behind him came an aide in garrison colors, carrying a folio of sealed papers.

The aide placed the folio on the secretariat table while the Mayor was still waving.

The papers were medical deferments, two of them, and a revised running order, and the request inside them was simple, which was that the city’s A-rank and the Bellamy B-rank be excused from the physical examinations as a courtesy to their upcoming schedules, and be billed in the exhibition slots at the top of the card.

Harrison read all three pages in silence, and then he filed them in his coat without a word, which meant the papers now existed in exactly one place, his pocket, and nowhere else.

”Vanguard Protocol Nine,” he said. ”Full assessment, every plate, no exceptions and no deferments.

The candidates will earn their card positions on the floor like everyone’s children. If Aldrich Vance is what your city says he is, Mr. Mayor, then testing him costs you nothing.”

Sterling laughed warmly for the crowd, and conceded gracefully for the crowd, and his smile did not move by one muscle while he did it, and Joel marked the transaction in his ledger with cold professional respect.

The Mayor had just been told no by a man he could not buy, in public, with his whole investment watching, and he had absorbed the blow without spilling a drop, which meant the counterstroke would arrive somewhere no one was looking, and the somewhere was already scheduled, in the wilderness phase, on a floor full of accidents.

’Two canopies, one table,’ Joel thought, ’and the house has already read the dealer’s sleeve.’

•••

The queues moved through the scanners, and the murmurs had been running ahead of Joel for ten minutes by the time he reached the desk, because a hooded F-rank who hung mercenaries like laundry had been the Rustward’s favorite story all week, and the story had climbed the hill on its own legs. The clerk took his plate with a joke already loaded, read the name on the metal, and stopped smiling.

”Carrow,” the clerk said. ”The file says the Carrow boy was deceased.”

”The file is wrong,” Joel said mildly. ”I have been dead twice this month, and it has not taken either time.”

An aide was already at the secretariat table with a quiet word about registration irregularities and a reported death, and the head clerk pulled the Spire’s own gate ledger to settle it, and the ledger settled it in Joel’s favor with the flat authority of the tower’s handwriting, because the outer gate had logged his exit alive, and it had logged it twice, once for each stratum.

”The Spire’s ledger says he lives,” Harrison said, arriving at the desk in time to watch the ledger do its work, ”so he stands. Register him.”

The scanner crystal took its reading, and the result posted to the slate in polite grey letters, and the laughter moved down the nearest queues like weather.

[System Note: the drum does not judge.]

”It survived the First Stratum?” someone said behind Joel, not quietly, because the queue had learned the shape of his story from the gate gossip. ”The Flesh-Guide?”

”The relocation dropped me at the Rim Shallows,” Joel recited in the tired, flat tone he’d rehearsed in a garret with a general standing in the corner. ”I found a crevice, hid in it, and ate what the vermin didn’t want for a few days. When a gate opened for a patrol, I walked out and came home.

”That’s the entire adventure, and I wouldn’t recommend it.”

The queue laughed, because the story was exactly the story a Level 1 Flesh-Guide should tell, luck and vermin and a crevice, and the laughter was the sound of the disguise working, and Joel stood inside it and let them file him under miracle, which was the drawer next to garbage and nobody ever audited either one.

Harrison did not laugh.

He stood at the desk with Joel’s plate still in his hand, and his flat eyes went from the slate to the boy and back, the same slow audit he had performed over a rune-slate in the Antechamber on the day of the grey mist.

”Carrow,” he said. ”I flagged your resonance once already. Grey readings are rare, and grey readings that walk home are rarer, and my flag comes back from Aethelgard with a question attached to it now.” He set the plate down, and slid it across. ”The floor settles questions. Tomorrow, on the sand, in front of everyone. Whatever you are, you will be it in daylight, where I can see the arithmetic.”

”Understood, sir,” Joel said. ”I have been told I am not much to look at.”

”That,” Harrison said, already turning away, ”is what the last irregular said.”

•••

Vance saw him across the floor at the running drum, and the whole performance nearly ended there.

Joel watched it happen from thirty paces away.

The crowd shifted. The golden boy’s eyes found the queue, then the name on the slate board.

Joel watched the color drain from Vance’s face in the same stages it had during the meeting on Ministerial Hill.

The champagne glass stopped halfway, the tan went grey beneath it, and for one heartbeat the whole machine of Aldrich Vance, the smile and the warmth and the crinkling blue eyes, simply stalled in the sunlight with his dead man standing in a queue eating the view.

Then the machinery caught, and the smile reassembled itself, and Vance lifted his glass a polite inch in Joel’s direction, a champion acknowledging a stray, and the hand holding the glass was not entirely steady.

Chloe saw him a moment later, and she did not stall at all, which was the difference between them and had always been.

She looked once, said something low to the girls around her, and crossed the floor with her public face already on, gracious and warm and priced to the situation.

”Joel,” she said, gently, for the audience. ”You are alive. We were told the Spire took you.”

”I was told a lot of things too,” Joel said, and let the sentence sit there, flat and cold and deniable, a stone in the river of her performance. ”Good luck in the trials, Chloe. It suits you.”

She held the warm smile through two full seconds of arithmetic, and then she withdrew with the grace of a professional closing a tab, and the crowd around them exhaled with the pleasure of a story, and every listener carried away the version Joel had built for them, the crevice, the vermin, the lucky gate, the boy who was strange and sad and no one’s problem.

In the shadow behind his heart, a voice like silk drawn over a blade arrived, faint as a thought with texture to it.

”The golden one’s heart has been loud since you took your plate out, Architect,” Nyx murmured from the dark. ”It is the loudest thing on this hill that is not the drum.”

’I know,’ Joel answered, watching the secretariat load the running order drum. ’He knows what the laundry looked like.

He does not know who wore the coat, and today I am only the ghost at the bottom of the card, and ghosts do not fold into his sums.’

The drum turned, the lots fell, and the slate board posted the order for the combat assessment, Vance billed at the top of a full card with no deferments, the Bellamy frost in the third hour, and Carrow, J., [Flesh-Guide], in the fourth hour of the afternoon, against whatever the wagons brought.

The colosseum roared its approval of the whole arrangement, and Joel Carrow stood in the middle of the applause like a deposit nobody had counted yet, and he watched the golden boy’s unsteady glass, and he smiled the small grey smile of a man holding every card in a game that had not noticed him sit down.

’See you tomorrow, Aldrich,’ he thought. ’Fourth hour. Bring your sword, and I will bring the arithmetic.’
