Chapter 11: Chapter 11: The Gore-Ape Chieftain

”Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” — Mike Tyson

The arena at the center of the camp had been swept, and that single detail rewrote the entire engagement in Joel’s ledger.

The fighting pit was a ring of packed red earth, raked clean of rubble and bone chips, and a landlord who maintained his floor was a landlord who used it regularly.

The ring wall was stacked from femurs and whole ribcages, and several of the skulls mounted along it were human, and one of them still wore the bent shank of a Rift-Iron spear through its eye socket, which meant that licensed hunters had stood exactly where Joel was standing, and the state of the floor said that none of them had ever swept it afterward.

The Chieftain entered its own arena by stepping over the wall and it planted the butts of both pillars in the swept earth with a sound like foundation pilings settling.

It stood four meters tall on legs like storage tanks, covered in crimson fur that was matted with old gore, and beneath the fur its hide showed a crosshatch of pale scars from throat to hip, which was the resume of a creature that had survived every challenge this floor could issue.

The lower pair of arms was the longer pair, and each fist gripped a quarried stone pillar as tall as Joel was, chipped along its edges from use and wrapped at the grip with braided sinew.

The upper pair of arms was shorter, with hands the size of doors, and a bony crown sat above small dark eyes that were set deep in the skull like rivets.

[Ding!]

[Boss engagement initialized.]

[Gore-Ape Chieftain (Lv. 15, Stratum Boss).]

[Boss vitals unlocked: 100%.]

[System Note: try not to look at the number too often.]

Joel circled left along the raked earth, and the Chieftain mirrored him without hurry, moving its enormous mass the minimum distance required to keep its pillars between them.

Every step it took was the smallest step available. He offered a long probing thrust at the edge of range to see what the thing did with pressure, and it did almost nothing, pivoting a few degrees and letting the point pass through air half a meter from its ribs.

’You conserve everything,’ Joel thought, updating the chart. ’No wasted motion, no temper, no show. You have done this a hundred times, and the last hundred tenants all stopped moving, so you have learned to spend nothing on them.’

•••

The first roar arrived with no telegraph at all.

The sound was not heard so much as received, a physical wave that rolled across the arena and hit him in the chest and the skull at the same time, and his vision tilted sideways on a suddenly liquid horizon.

The packed earth swung like the deck of a ship, his knees softened, and nausea arrived with a two-second delay.

Joel understood within those two seconds that the roar was not anger and was not display, because it was a prescription, aimed with surgical precision at the vestibular canals of the inner ear.

[Ding!]

[Status: ’Sonic Bellow’ applied. Effect: vestibular disruption, 6 seconds.]

[System Note: the landlord prefers tenants who cannot stand.]

As the world tilted around him, Joel tore a strip of cloth from his shirt. He rubbed it in ash, stuffed the pieces into both ears, and barely got them in before the next roar hit.

The dizziness still came, but it was weaker this time. Weak enough for Joel to keep his feet beneath him as the rush that always followed the roar hit.

Because a rush always followed the sound.

Joel watched from the edge of the ring three times.

Each time, the same thing happened. The roar came first. Then a brief pause. Then the Brutes charged.

By the third cycle, Joel knew the pattern.

It was as predictable as a clock.

The Chieftain bellowed, waited the six seconds of the tenant’s scramble, and then crossed the arena in two strides with a pillar sweeping low to harvest whatever balance remained.

The interval between bellows held steady at forty seconds, close enough that he was willing to schedule around it, and on the third cycle Joel stopped retreating and sold the monster the exact scramble it was buying.

He staggered right on cue.

The Chieftain took the bait and charged, its pillar sweeping low.

Joel waited until the last second, then slipped sideways. The pillar missed him by inches.

His feet moved before he could think. Three phantom lifetimes of training had burned the movement into his body.

He planted his feet, turned with the swing, and raised his blade.

The Meteor Piercer launched him forward in one explosive burst.

Joel drove the spear into the Chieftain’s exposed flank, just behind the armor plates.

The impact hit like a cannon shot. 11,200 units of kinetic force tore through the spearhead and into the Brute’s body.

The point penetrated perhaps ten centimeters into hide and rib muscle that would have taken a Crawler through the spine, and the discharge itself still went through like a wrecking ball, and the Chieftain took one full stagger step, its first of the day, and the bone wall of the arena rang from the pillar it used to catch itself.

[Ding!]

[Damage dealt: significant. Target Vitality: 96%.]

[Warning: Weapon durability: 3/80.]

[Warning: Discharge strain recurring. Host structural tolerance: 4,560 units.]

[System Note: the cannon is working. The mountain is simply very large.]

The deep eyes came back around to Joel, and something in them was finished conserving.

The fight that followed was nothing like the Blood-Brutes.

The Chieftain was smarter. It stopped wasting its strength and started making every attack count.

One of its upper hands darted forward.

Joel raised his spear.

The hand pulled back at the last second.

The Chieftain shifted its weight, making Joel think the next attack was coming from above. Instead, it swung the pillar low.

Joel stepped in rather than giving ground and caught the sweep on his spear shaft.

The impact tore one of the chitin plates from his grafted armor.

Pain shot through both arms, and the force rattled his bones like a bell.

Joel staggered back, fingers tightening around the spear.

[Ding!]

[Weapon durability: 2/80.]

[System Note: the pointed stick is approaching retirement.]

Then it did something that truly frightened him.

Joel felt the fear rise in his chest, but he pushed it aside and kept moving.

Instead of pressing, it raised its right pillar high and brought it straight down into the arena floor ten meters from him, and the packed earth cratered and shock-cracked in radiating lines, and Joel clean footwork lanes became rubble and tilted plates.

It did the same on the other side a moment later, unhurried, patient, and Joel understood that it was not attacking him at all, and it was attacking the floor, fencing the arena itself to herd him into the broken ground near the wall where footwork went to die.

’You are not a beast,’ he thought, backing onto the least ruined plate of earth he could find.

•••

He was still holding the chart in his head when the chart betrayed him.

The forty-second interval was due, and he had built his next fifteen seconds around it, and the bellow arrived at twenty-two seconds instead.

While Joel weight was committed to the wrong foot and his inner ears were still packed with wadded cloth that turned out to matter not at all.

The world swung sideways, and through the tilt he saw the right pillar rise high, which was the committed overhead he had catalogued and answered three times already, and he moved to answer it a fourth time.

The right pillar was the feint. The left one, arriving early off the broken schedule, came in flat and low from the other side, and the two quarried stones closed on his left side like a nutcracker accepting a nut.

The cross-smash caught Joel’s left arm and collarbone between the pillars, and the sound it made was small and architectural, like a bundle of green sticks wrapped in a towel.

The pain did not come as pain at first.

It came as a white flash.

Yet somewhere inside that emptiness, Joel’s mind stayed strangely calm, studying what had happened with cold focus.

The left arm hung from his shoulder by meat and sleeve, the humerus had become an estimate rather than a bone, and the collarbone beneath it had been redistributed into more than two pieces, and the diagnosis was delivered in a clean clinical sentence that his mouth would never be permitted to say out loud.

Consciousness offered him a graceful refund at that point, a soft dark exit from the noise, and Joel declined it through gritted teeth, because a man who fainted in this arena would never wake up in it.

He swallowed the scream, and the effort of swallowing it cost him more than the arm had, and the Chieftain looked down at the tenant who had taken a full cross-smash and was still upright on two feet, and for one full second the veteran with the library simply stared.

[Ding!]

[Lethal engagement survived (critical trauma sustained).]

[Survival Accumulation: 60%.]

[+0.3 Physique detected. Micro-adaptation logged.]

[Undying Vigor: 5 hours 27 minutes remaining.]

Then the heat arrived in the ruin of Joel’s shoulder, the deep flood of it pouring into pulped bone and torn meat.

Joel watched the Chieftain’s face do something that no scar on its entire crosshatched hide had ever prepared it for, because the monster had drawn both pillars back for the finishing stroke, and the stroke had already begun to fall, and the arm it had pulverized between two quarried stones was moving.

The ruined limb hung there in the space between the pillars, wrong in every angle, and it was not hanging the way dead meat hangs, because beneath the torn sleeve the flesh was visibly, impossibly, putting itself back together in real time, and Joel Carrow stood in the white field of his own pain and smiled up through it with his teeth still clenched, because the landlord had just learned what every poisoner in Caelmont was going to learn eventually, which was that this particular tenant did not stay broken.
