SSS- Rank: I awakened a 100,000 Roulette Return System

Chapter 28: Chapter 28: The Trial of Assessment

”The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.” — Sun Tzu, The Art of War

The combat assessment began at the third bell, and the colosseum had been transformed overnight.

Eight reinforced, chained wagons had come down from the Spire before dawn.

The creatures inside had kept the whole south hill awake with their noise.

The arena floor had been cleaned and salted.

Scanner crystals stood on brass posts at the four corners.

A large board hung from the VIP railing, showing the rules clearly enough for every candidate to read.

The trial was scored on four axes of twenty-five points each, which were Offense, Defense, Efficiency, and Control, and a combined forty qualified a candidate for the wilderness phase at the week’s end.

The slate board would show every score in public, the Proctor had announced.

The Inner City did not hide assessments. It conducted them openly.

Joel stood in the candidate gallery with his hood down and his hands folded.

He read the board once and memorized it.

He had already read the same board in his head two nights ago, in a garret, while a general stood in the corner.

Aldrich Vance went third, he moved like a storm.

His beast was an Ash-Brute, a Lv. 17 cousin of the Barrens elites.

It was all muscle, thick hide, and pure rage.

The moment the cage opened, it charged across the sand like a landslide.

The crowd came up off its benches, and Vance let it come, because the whole point of the performance was the pause.

He stood calmly with his feet planted and his chin raised.

He waited until the Brute was within ten paces.

Then heat spread from his body, and a red blade formed in his hand, glowing like clear crimson glass.

He took one step into the charge and swung.

The blade cut through the Ash-Brute from the shoulder to the opposite ribs.

Its momentum carried the two halves past him and onto the sand. It was already dead before they hit the ground.

Vance turned off the blade, wiped nothing from his hands, and raised them toward the crowd.

The crowd erupted with the special roar it saved for its chosen ones.

Mayor Sterling applauded, his rings flashing in the sunlight.

Gold on the banners caught the morning sun, and for a brief moment, the whole morning belonged to the golden boy.

Chloe Bellamy went in the second hour.

Her beasts were two Soot-Hounds, fast creatures with strong bodies and smoke-colored hide.

She dealt with them the way her house dealt with everything elegantly and with style.

Frost spread from her fingers in thin, white patterns.

She froze the sand beneath the hounds’ feet, turning it into a smooth sheet of ice.

The hounds slipped and struggled to stay up.

While they were off balance, Chloe built more ice around them until both were trapped inside clear, white shells.

The crowd applauded the prettiest thirty seconds of the day.

Two monsters stood frozen like pastries in a display case.

’One clean strike for showmanship. A mirror of ice for elegance,’ Joel noted from the gallery, judging the fight in his head for practice.

’Both of them used more mana than they needed. The crowd was the real target.

Efficiency 24 is generous. The Proctor knows it.

His real judgment is in the margins.’

•••

The fourth hour arrived, and the slate board posted the last name on the card, and the crowd settled in for the comedy portion of the program.

[CARROW, J. - FLESH-GUIDE (F)]

Laughter spread through the tiers, just like it had in the Antechamber on the day of the grey mist.

The candidates gave Joel extra space as he walked down to the arena floor.

It was a new kind of respect, the kind people give someone they think might make a mess of their clothes.

In the stands above the east gate, an old woman with three teeth was already arguing with a bookmaker.

She had bet two credits on the grey boy at five to one.

Her reason was simple: a boy who survived the Spire and left mercenaries hanging would surely survive a pig.

The pig came out of the cage sideways.

Even the Spire’s quartermasters knew how to make an entrance.

The Rift-Boar was a common beast from the Second Stratum.

It was a Lv. 14 mass of muscle with an armored skull and one simple strategy: charge straight ahead as fast as possible.

The one they had brought out for the Flesh-Guide was as big as a hay wagon and already angry about the whole morning.

The cage crew dropped the gate and retreated behind iron, and the boar came out already charging.

[Ding!]

[Hostile detected: Rift-Boar (Lv. 14, Trial Stock).]

[Assessment note: threat to host, negligible. The Wheel does not pay for matinees.]

Joel had spent the three prior hours doing the one thing nobody in the stands would ever think to charge him for, which was observing.

He knew where the raked sand was damp and

He knew which parts of the sand were damp and which had dried into firm ground.

He knew where every scanner crystal stood.

He had even chosen his position before breakfast: eleven paces from the north wall and four paces away from the direct path between the cage gate and the instructor benches.

The beast had one strategy.

And one strategy meant a pattern.

A pattern meant a weakness.

Joel Carrow had never missed a weakness in two lives.

He stood on his chosen spot and did not move.

The boar stopped at the bottom of the ramp.

It kicked up sand, lowered its armored head, and charged.

The one-and-a-half-ton beast crossed the arena in a grey-brown blur.

The crowd rose to its feet.

Even a joke has a moment when it can go wrong.

Joel watched the boar charge with a calm heart.

He judged the distance as it closed in.

At the last possible moment, he took one slow step to the side.

Just half a meter.

His body moved off the boar’s path, his weight already shifting onto his other foot.

The boar passed the space where Joel had been standing at a full gallop, found nothing there to stop against, and met the north wall of the colosseum instead.

The impact shook the whole arena.

The stone rang like a giant bell, and dust fell from the cracks in the walls.

The one-and-a-half-ton boar crashed onto its side in the sand, its legs still kicking at the air.

The scanner crystals flashed as they checked the beast.

Then they gave their verdict.

The fight was over.

[Ding!]

[Trial Stock neutralized (unassisted structural impact).]

[Threat assessment: none. Survival Accumulation: unchanged.]

[System Note: the house thanks the wall for its cooperation.]

The crowd was quiet for exactly as long as it took ten thousand people to confirm what they had seen, and then it booed.

The boos came down from the tiers like a storm.

They were honest boos. The crowd had paid to see blood and instead got a pig that had been dodged.

A bread roll flew from the cheap seats and broke apart in the sand near his boots.

A man two rows up shouted, ”Coward!” at the top of his lungs.

Laughter spread beneath the boos.

The city had decided what the Carrow boy was weeks ago, and twenty seconds in the sand had done nothing to change its mind.

Joel stayed where he was while the gate crew secured and hooded the sleeping boar.

He bowed to the booing crowd with a serious expression, giving them exactly the show they had paid for.

Behind his mask, his mind was calm and quiet.

He was satisfied.

•••

In the instructor benches, Miss Albright closed her eyes for one moment, which was her entire reaction on the performance, and then went back to her clipboard.

In the VIP box, Sterling leaned back with his rings laced over his stomach, and whatever moved behind his smile, his aide was already at his shoulder taking quiet instructions about the wilderness phase.

Vance laughed louder than anyone else in the arena.

Back in control, he shouted something generous across the sand about how well cowards could survive.

Chloe did not laugh, Joel noticed that too.

She was watching the north wall, not the boy, with the quiet focus of someone doing math she did not like.

And Proctor Harrison stood at the rail with his rune-slate forgotten in his hand.

He had trained Inner City candidates for eleven years.

He knew what accidental survival looked like.

It was messy. It was desperate. The candidate would panic, stumble, and keep as much distance from the beast as possible.

What he had just watched was nothing like that.

There had been no accident at all.

The Flesh-Guide had stood in one spot like a man waiting at a counter.

At the last possible moment, he took a single step barely half a meter.

It wasn’t luck, luck was messy. That step had been exact.

He pulled up the scan log and read it twice.

No skill used. No mana spent.

The movement was within the normal limits of a Level 1 body, but the footwork belonged to someone with ten thousand hours of dueling practice.

No academy on the continent gave that kind of training to a support class.

”Forty-six,” he said to the scoring clerk, without looking up.

[Slate: CARROW, J. - Offense 0, Defense 25, Efficiency 21, Control 0. Total: 46. QUALIFIED.]

The pass mark was forty.

Harrison had scored enough trials to know what a coward’s score looked like. It could be anything, a lucky 70 or a miserable 12. Fear was never precise.

But a score of forty-six, earned with a single step from a boy who only needed forty, was not a coward’s score.

It was a budget.

He wrote one line on his slate and underlined it twice, and the line read the same as his flag from the Antechamber, which was that grey readings which walk home were rare, and grey readings which walked home without ever hurrying were rarer still.

Joel climbed the gallery steps through the tail of the booing, collected the two credits the old woman pressed on him as a tip out of pure gratitude for her winnings, and sat down in the candidate benches with the sun warm on his shoulders. Somewhere in the dark behind his heart, a voice like silk over a blade edge stirred.

”The golden one’s heart was loud, Architect,” Nyx murmured. ”But the man with the rings stopped breathing for a moment, and the woman who watched the wall never blinked.”

’Then everyone important bought a ticket,’ Joel answered, folding his hands. ’The wilderness phase is in three days, and the Mayor has already paid for the accident. Let him send it. I have been meaning to expand the staff.’
