SSS- Rank: I awakened a 100,000 Roulette Return System

Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Chitin-Queen

”Into the heart of the beast.” — old hunting proverb

The silk roads ran downhill for an hour, and the deeper they ran, the more the country changed around them.

The web curtains thickened from hanging sheets into solid walls, layers of silk stretched between ribbed stone until the galleries became tunnels of grey gauze.

The lure-moss abandoned its neat rows completely. It spread into wild fields, glowing blue-green across every surface without leaving a single dark gap between them.

The larders multiplied as he descended.

Cocoons hung in racks of a dozen, then a dozen dozen.

Joel passed them at a steady walk, his lamp dark and his breathing slow. The heart of the stratum had nothing left to hide behind.

Neither did he.

Water ran everywhere in the glow, the caverns weeping down walls and ceiling alike, and the deep hum of the Spire had thickened into a bass note he felt in his teeth rather than heard, the sound of a place that had stopped being geography and started being an organism.

The road ended at a mouth.

The lair opened like a cathedral nave that had been melted and re-carved, forty meters of ribbed vaulting vanishing up into moss-lit haze, and the floor of it was not stone at all but a bowl of layered silk, old and grey and firm as teak, worn into paths by years of traffic.

Stalactites hung from the unseen ceiling in drowned forests, jeweled with water, and between them, strung on cables of silk thick as Joel’s wrist, the trophies hung whole and unspun, pelts and plates and the armor of things that had come down the silk roads and stopped, kept the way a banker keeps documents rather than the way a hunter keeps heads.

She was in the middle of her ledger, and she was bigger than the bestiary rhymes had been brave enough to say.

The Chitin-Queen occupied the center of the silk bowl the way a ship occupies a drydock, and Joel read her from the ground up.

Her body was the size of a loaded cargo wagon, low and vast, armored in plate that had started life as slate-grey chitin and had ended as something closer to terracing, layers of grown plate overlapping in ridges that shed the moss-light in dull bronze waves.

Eight legs held her weight above the floor, each one a column of segmented armor ending in a hook the size of a wood axe.

Unlike her children, she had eyes, a crown of wet black lenses set into an armored brow ridge.

Every one of them tracked Joel as a single, unbroken gaze.

Below the crown, her fangs folded like the scouts’, but at her size they were executioner’s tools.

The grown barb at the tip of her abdomen glistened wet. That wasn’t even the worst of it.

The worst ran along her back—a ridge of raised sockets built into her armor. Dozens of them, each holding a spike of grown chitin sharpened to a blade.

As her crown turned toward him, the spikes rose from their racks one by one, like an orchestra waiting for its cue.

She opened with the orchestra, and the opening taught Joel everything about the difference between an elite and a monarch.

The volley came as a single motion, thirty spikes leaving the racks with a sound like wet silk torn lengthwise, and they did not fly so much as they arrived, filling the air of the nave in a pattern with no floor in it.

He moved on instinct, but a spike still caught his outer thigh.

It tore through his coat, flesh, and the stone behind him.

Joel rolled behind the root of a stalactite, already measuring the depth of the wound.

It was shallow.

That fact told him everything he needed to know.

Anything that could cut him at all could kill him if it landed cleanly.

Armor superior to the halberd’s edge,’ he catalogued, while she reloaded the racks with movements like a card dealer’s. ’Speed superior to mine, ground superior to mine. Everything she has is superior, so I need the one thing she cannot be, which is underneath her own weapons.’

Joel came out from cover as the second volley fired.

He didn’t try to survive it cleanly. He ran through the weave instead, reading the rhythm between heartbeats.

One spike caught his ribs. Another tore open his calf.

He paid both wounds into the account without slowing down.

Pain had become a currency, and Joel knew the exchange rate.

The web-nets came next, spat from her crown in weighted sheets, and the first one took his halberd’s crescent and would have ended the fight if he had not let the weapon go entirely, dropping it into the silk and diving out from under the wrap that had been thrown for his whole body.

Paralytic, the numbing cold told him, spreading from the strands that had kissed his knuckles, and his Caustic Filtration burned it out of his blood even as he rolled to his feet empty-handed and sprinted for the nave’s flank.

She pursued at speed that shamed her children, tonnage moving like water, and the floor of her own house was the trap he had been running for all along.

The wild moss fields climbed the stalactite forests along the nave’s edge. Where the moss grew thick, water ran off its cushions in thin, invisible streams, coating every surface.

A column holding three tons of wet limestone above a silk-covered floor had opinions about being struck by a Level 18 with 59 Strength while being chased by something heavier than a wagon.

The Meteor Piercer, applied sideways to the root of the first column, was not a weapon in that moment but a demolition order, and the nave’s ceiling joined the battle on neither side’s instruction.

The stalactite came down like a verdict, four meters of jeweled stone, and the Queen’s speed was exactly as inhuman as advertised, and still not enough for a fact that large, and it took her across two legs on her left side and drove both into the silk floor to the hip with a shriek of plate and a crash that ran through the whole stratum like a struck bell.

Half the nave’s moss-light went out with the impact, dust and spray hanging in the ruined glow, and Joel retrieved his halberd from her own webbing and turned to face the settling dust with the account already balanced in his head, because a pinned monarch was a monarch with her armor racks at the wrong angle, and the fight had exactly one phase left in it.

[Survival Accumulation: 71%.]

Then she did the thing that ended every clever plan he had made that night, which was simply refuse the premise, and Joel watched her tear her own legs out of the floor.

She left them there. She walked out of the impalement on six legs trailing silk and ichor, and her crown of lenses found him across the ruined nave with the entire orchestra rising in its racks, and Joel understood, in the cold clear way of a man whose treatment plan has just been overruled by the disease, that the margin between a clever kill and a dead pharmacist was now one exchange wide.

•••

So he made the last trade left on the table, and he made it standing still.

He planted the halberd’s butt on the silk floor, squared his chest into her charge, and opened the account to deposits, and the Queen arrived at him.

The first foreleg came down like an axe.

Joel took it on the sternum, and the strike simply stopped. Its force was swallowed whole.

Her second hook slammed into his ribs and met the same silence.

Then her full weight came down on him, her armored crown crashing into him with the steady beat of a drum.

She had found prey that would not fall, and her instincts had no answer for it.

So she made one.

Strike after strike.

The nave rang with the sound of a queen hammering a boy who absorbed every blow.

[Ding!]

[Aegis Frame: 6,200 units absorbed. Host damage: 0.]

[Aegis Frame: 7,400 units absorbed. Host damage: 0.]

[Aegis Frame: 11,300 units absorbed. Host damage: 0.]

[Aegis Frame: 14,700 units absorbed. Host damage: 0.]

He fell only as far as one knee, and he stayed there on purpose, because a kneeling target invites the killing overhead, and the killing overhead was the entire schedule now, every strike committed from above, each one a deposit, the frame singing under him like a struck tuning fork the size of a life.

[Ding!]

[Aegis Frame: full charge approaching. 19,000 units stored.]

’Noted,’ Joel thought, from the center of the storm, and on the next descending blow he rose into it instead of under it.

The leap carried him off the silk and up the face of her crown.

One boot found the ridge of her brow.

Joel reversed the halberd in both hands. Nineteen thousand units of her own force rode the crescent as he drove it down through the lens crown, through the brow seam, and into the skull.

Then he released everything.

[Ding!]

[Meteor Piercer executed. Stored Charge released: 19,000 units.]

The detonation was inward, and that was the whole design of it. The Queen’s armored head rang like a cathedral bell hit from the inside, and the discharge of everything she had ever hit him with went off within the casing that had been built to keep the world out, and the casing failed from within in a single catastrophic instant.

The crown of lenses went dark, the tonnage sagged into the silk floor of her own nave, and the echo rolled away down the stratum’s silk roads, junction after junction, until the weeping dark was quiet in a way it had not been quiet in years. ℴ

Joel stood on the settling silk beside the enormous ruin of her, chest heaving, lacerations already closing, and he looked down at the headless ledger-keeper of the Weeping Caverns in the blue-green dark, and the last system note of the night arrived almost gently, like a dealer sweeping the table.

[Fate-Bound Legion: eligible target detected.]

’Yes,’ Joel answered, looking at his first general. ’Let us discuss the terms of her employment.’
