Seeing the wooden splinter lodged in her thigh, she gritted her teeth and pulled it out.

”Ugh!”

Blood flowed out. Beverly used her remaining vitality to repair the wound, but the blood still kept seeping.

”Your leg!”

Having just awakened, Camilla was still dazed by what was happening, but seeing her best friend injured, she hurried over and used a healing spell to treat her.

”Don’t waste your strength.”

Beverly slapped Camilla’s hand away. For some reason, there was a trace of anger in Beverly at this moment, anger at her own incompetence...

”You have nowhere left to run—give up and surrender.”

Little White stepped out, holding a wooden bow. In his soul-fire of ghostly blue, there was nothing but indifference and coldness.

Sha sha sha!

The sound of feet trampling through the snow could be heard. The blood slaves and Skeleton Cavalry appeared one by one, surrounding the two of them.

”Captain Little White, sister Vina, senior Maro, what are you all...?”

”Go back to them. This time, I’ve lost again.”

As Beverly finished speaking, she pushed Camilla away with one motion. She was trying to protect her from being implicated, because in her eyes, escape was now impossible.

”The traitors will receive strict punishment, and the manner of the punishment will be determined by the Queen.”

Little White spoke as the Skeleton Cavalry advanced step by step. Seeing this, instead of going over to Little White’s side, the pushed-away Camilla ran to Beverly’s side and spread her arms to shield her.

”Wait, this...this is all a misunderstanding.”

”Take that explanation to the Queen.”

Little White ignored Camilla. After she was controlled by the blood slaves, everyone turned toward Beverly.

Watching their steady approach, rage blazed in Beverly’s eyes. When had she ever been treated so...

But now, she had lost. This time there would be no more chances to remain hidden. Yet she carried a mission—she absolutely could not fall into that woman’s hands. She had to resist!

”Wailing spirits of the endless purgatory, with my blood as conduit—descend upon this world!”

A rift tore open suddenly. At this point, she no longer cared about expending life force, because this time, she fought with no thought of survival.

”Be careful!”

The blood slaves rushed to engage the wailing spirits.

”Aaaah!”

The wailing spirits were extremely fragile, but possessed powerful spirit attacks. Yet, limited by her abilities, Beverly had only summoned a few; the blood slaves swiftly eliminated them all.

”Beverly...”

Looking at the ferocious Beverly, Camilla felt as if she was a stranger, as if everything before had been an illusion.

Seeing her wailing spirits destroyed, the unwilling Beverly continued to summon by overdrawing her life, but suddenly, an arrow flew.

Thud!

The arrow struck her abdomen. Vina had not aimed to kill, but interrupted Beverly’s casting. Yet in her madness, Beverly began to chant magic once again, even seriously injuring several blood slaves who had held back. Seeing this, Little White quietly nocked another arrow.

”Take her back and let Lola treat her.”

A shot that would not miss!

Vina and the others hesitated because Beverly used to be a companion. But Little White would not—he was the Queen’s loyal undead, for him, Serea’s will came first, not emotions.

”Kill...kill them for me!”

Commanding the wailing spirits in an effort to block the enemy, Beverly did not notice Little White’s sneak attack—but Camilla did.

”No!”

Camilla cried out, but Little White would not heed her. As the bowstring was drawn to full, Camilla’s mind replayed all her memories with Beverly.

”We...must always be together!”

The image froze on Beverly’s childhood promise to her. In an instant, fangs grew in Camilla’s clenched jaw.

”Fall...”

”Don’t!”

A powerful psychic force erupted, blasting several blood slaves away. At the same time, Little White’s arrow was about to fly. At that perilous instant, Camilla did not strike her companions but rushed to embrace Beverly.

Thud!

The arrow pierced through Camilla’s back and out her chest. Feeling the warmth soaking Camilla’s chest, Beverly began to tremble.

She reached out and touched—it was both warm and wet, her hands drenched. Beverly went mad.

”What are you doing!”

Beverly demanded loudly, while Camilla asked softly.

”Beverly must not be able to stand living here and wanted to leave—I understand how she feels. Suddenly waking up in a strange place and all...”

”What nonsense are you talking about? Can’t you see I’ve been pretending all along!”

Beverly was furious at Camilla’s naivety. Even when not under her enchantment, Camilla still believed her. No matter what Beverly did, she would not fight back, and now she even foolishly blocked an arrow for this impostor.

Incompetence and rage filled her heart, and amid them, a peculiar thought arose.

Maybe, back then, she should not have cared about her mission and just stayed hidden. This ’idiot’ would never have figured it out for a lifetime...

”Camilla!” xN

Seeing Camilla shot, Vina and Maro both called out, as Little White froze with his second arrow ready.

”Aaaah!”

In a flash, Beverly snapped—she made her final decision.

Burn the soul!

”Uaaah!”

Ghostly blue power raged around her, and then the soul of a giant sword-wielding figure appeared behind her.

Summon: Warbeast Akma!

Once a slain hero, now summoned in the form of a wailing spirit by Beverly. With a single sword swing, the blood slaves were forced back, but Beverly, whose soul was burning, also suffered unbearable agony.

This wound could not be repaired—which was why she would rather die and be reborn than burn her own soul...

”Kill them!”

The enraged Beverly commanded Akma to charge at the others while she cradled Camilla and fled to the rear as fast as she could.

”We’re almost out...”

She forced herself to say the words, but suddenly a black shadow plummeted from above.

Bone tail swept across, flinging the two aside.

”Camilla!”

Beverly screamed, seeing a high-level undead in black robe—it was...

Little Black!

At that moment, Little Black caught Camilla and gently set her by a tree. Beverly then shifted as if to snatch Camilla back, but—

”Don’t...”

Camilla’s lips parted slightly, no sound escaping. But Beverly understood what she meant.

Far off, a mass of black shapes were rapidly approaching—the Skeleton Warrior army!

”Damn it!”

Beverly roared, knowing there was no way she could take Camilla with her today. So—

Run!

Once her strength returned, she would be back for Camilla—she was sure of it, absolutely sure!

Soul Wings unfolded once more. This time, after burning her soul she gained even greater power. Though it had caused irremediable soul damage, she escaped with astonishing speed.

Maro and the others wanted to mount a Carrion Beast and give chase, but it was already too late.

Seeing how strongly you all reacted, I’ve modified this chapter’s content.
