Chapter 368: Chapter 242: Wiping Out Traces After Eating Chicken Chapter 368: Chapter 242: Wiping Out Traces After Eating Chicken Dong Lei was even more nervous, trembling all over. He crawled forward two steps, grabbed the hem of Gu Changsheng’s skirt, and said, “Lady Changsheng, the Phoenix Divine Bird is a spiritual object that descends from the heavens as an auspicious sign. Disrespectful words alone are a blasphemy against the spirits, let alone killing it!”

“Lady Changsheng, my mother says that when it comes to ghosts and deities, it’s better to believe they exist than not. The phoenix must not be killed at all costs!”

Ning Er beside him was also extremely tense.

She had gone to great lengths to bring these two phoenixes from the County Prince’s Mansion, not for Lady Changsheng to feast on. What was she to do now?

Suddenly, she remembered the worried look on Yuan Bao’s face when she had asked for the phoenixes.

Indeed, Yuan Bao’s concerns were valid. Lady Changsheng was someone who didn’t always play by the rules!

Have you ever seen anyone cook a phoenix? She had lived so long but had never even heard of such a thing, let alone seen it! This was truly unheard of!

Gu Changsheng looked sorrowfully at her family members, their expressions as if she had committed some heinous crime!

Heaven knows, she was wronged!

“Mother, can phoenixes also be eaten?” Little Meat Bun hugged his stomach and stared at the two phoenixes in front of him with his big, round, puzzled eyes.

Gu Changsheng nodded with certainty, “If all phoenixes are like this, it would be a shame not to put them on the dinner table!”

“Why? Why do Grandpa Song and Aunt Lei disagree with eating it?” Little Meat Bun babbled, having had radishes for his morning meal that day–all radishes! And now he was a little hungry again!

Gu Changsheng cast a glance at Uncle Song and Dong Lei, who almost shielded the “phoenixes” behind them, and her lips twitched, “Because they lack insight!”

“Huh?” Gu Ze, Little Meat Bun, became even more puzzled.

Gu Changsheng kicked Dong Lei, who was clinging to her skirt, aside and flashed a look of helplessness. Pointing to the two great phoenixes, each measuring a meter and a half in length, she said, “Today, this old woman will broaden your horizons. In Qinghai, there is a chicken called a Golden Pheasant! The Golden Pheasant has a golden-yellow filamentous crown and a burnt orange collar on the back of its neck. Its body is brilliantly colored, and its tail feathers are as red as fire. These two are obviously over-sized, fat chickens!”

“Uncle Song, Xiao Leizi, do you understand now?” Gu Changsheng raised her hand and brushed it over the Golden Pheasant, then held her hand in front of them, “See this gold powder? If they were truly the legendary phoenixes, would they need gold powder to decorate themselves?”

Uncle Song and Dong Lei’s faces changed, and they were still baffled for a moment.

But the glistening gold powder on her hands was indeed laid out before them. If they were real phoenixes, it seems they really wouldn’t need to do this…

Gu Changsheng looked around the room, and apart from her beloved son who was open to the truth, the other three were all slack-jawed in disbelief. She shook her head sympathetically.

Heaven help us, the phoenix turned into a chicken. The difference was no small matter. Look how terrified the three of them were, their mouths agape in shock.

“So, this is not a phoenix, but a Golden Pheasant?” Uncle Song pointed at the two “phoenixes” incredulously.

“Indeed!” Gu Changsheng replied bluntly.

“So, the scene of Phoenix Visit and Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix descending from heaven as an auspicious sign is fake?” Uncle Song asked, following up immediately.

“Certainly!” Gu Changsheng responded without any ambiguity, straightforward and clear.

Then Uncle Song, who had been kneeling, suddenly sat down on the floor, a look of defeat and disbelief on his face.

“Beautiful phoenixes, how did they become chickens? Lady Changsheng, are you sure you’re not mistaken? No matter how you look at it, they seem to be the legendary phoenixes!” Dong Lei, in front of the gold powder, still couldn’t believe the truth.

Such beautiful phoenixes turned out not to be phoenixes!

She couldn’t believe it!

“But the fact remains, Golden Pheasants indeed resemble the legendary phoenix,” Gu Changsheng said nonchalantly, spreading her hands.

In modern times, Golden Pheasants were hunted extensively because of their beauty, facing the brink of extinction and designated as a second-class protected species. Gu Changsheng was absolutely certain she could not be mistaken!

Ah, the phoenix! Indeed, it was an entity of legend, far removed from real life!

Gu Changsheng felt a multitude of emotions.

People should indeed live more realistically; it’s better not to be too fantastical!

“But, why would His Highness Prince Mu do such a thing?” Uncle Song, sitting on the ground, suddenly raised his head, looking at his mistress with confusion. He was not a stubborn man. His mistress spoke with certainty, but if the phoenixes were Golden Pheasants, then knowing the truth and still orchestrating such a false auspicious event, what was His Highness Prince Mu trying to achieve?

With her danfeng eyes, Gu Changsheng shrugged, “You’re asking me? Who should I ask? Only the evildoer himself probably knows the answer to that!”

Why Zhou Mu would put on such a mystifying show was also a puzzle to Gu Changsheng.

Could it be to make a success of the Huo family’s girl?

It shouldn’t be…

The room suddenly fell into silence, with no one present able to utter a word.

I just can’t figure it out! A series of question marks hanged above their heads, especially for Ning Er, whose face was quite a sight at this moment.

Could her lord, who was like a Divine Residence, actually engage in such ghostly trickery?

What in the world was going on?

Gu Changsheng was the least likely person to waste brain cells on trivial matters. If she couldn’t understand it, she would decisively stop thinking about it. She stared unblinkingly at those two big Golden Pheasants, nonchalantly starting, “Alright, even if the evildoer is incredibly bored, he wouldn’t do something meaningless. His actions must have a deep meaning. If he doesn’t tell us, then we won’t ask.”

“However, these two pheasants just pretended to be Phoenixes. Now that their task is completed, they’ll probably need to be disposed of without a trace!”

At this point, Gu Changsheng couldn’t help but jump for joy, rubbing her hands together in anticipation.

Believe me, when it comes to physical labor like disposing of bodies, she’s quite eager to lend a hand!

Gu Changsheng gulped, so hungry, she truly could take care of it!

Eat them! In ancient times, these weren’t considered national second-class protected animals! She didn’t believe the Court would be so free to protect animals! This was a Golden Pheasant, a true fighter among wild chickens! It would be a real shame not to eat it!

Even if she didn’t eat them, the chickens would probably be disposed of, what a waste!

Waste is disgraceful! Gu Changsheng felt she should demonstrate the excellent character of making the most out of things.

“So it’s decided, we can’t mess up the evildoer’s big plans. Let’s just quietly take care of the chicken on his behalf! Xiao Leizi, get the pot boiling, save the feathers from these two Golden Pheasants for me, I want to make a Brocade Feather Screen, and cook the meat for me! Act stealthily and quickly! I’m starving!” Gu Changsheng made her decision, covering her belly as she instructed the still seated Dong Lei.

“Cook them, cook them! Cook them and have meat!” Little Meat Bun clapped his hands, laughing joyfully, because there would be meat to eat!

Dong Lei scrambled up from the ground in a panic and hurriedly said, “Lady Changsheng, I’ve slaughtered plenty of chickens, ducks, and fish, but I’ve never slaughtered a Phoenix before!”

Hearing this, Gu Changsheng immediately glared, “I’ve already said these aren’t Phoenixes, they’re Golden Pheasants! A white horse is a horse, a Golden Pheasant is also a chicken! Don’t be fooled by their size, their long tails make up more than half of their length. Remove the tails, and they’re just slightly larger chickens. Haven’t you slaughtered chickens before?”

Hearing her Lady’s question, Dong Lei instinctively nodded, “I have slaughtered chickens…”

But she hadn’t slaughtered such big chickens that looked so much like Phoenixes…

“Just slaughter them as you would any chicken! Do you really need me to teach you that?” Gu Changsheng didn’t give her the chance to finish speaking, waving her hand dismissively, “Get moving, and make sure it’s done without anyone finding out, so as not to ruin the evildoer’s plans. We’ll enjoy our chicken and help him dispose of the bodies at the same time, killing two birds with one stone!”

Dong Lei saw her Lady make up her mind and leave those words behind, scooping up the Young Master and walking out, hurrying after her with a couple of steps, still wanting to argue.

But Gu Changsheng paid no attention to her, waving her hand impatiently and without turning back, said, “If you can’t even cook a chicken right, Xiao Leizi, have I been feeding you meat and fish every day just to fatten you up? If that Golden Pheasant isn’t served on a plate within a Shichen, I’m going to cook you, useless thing!”

“Wu…” Dong Lei watched the retreating figure, on the verge of tears, looking helplessly at Uncle Song and Ning Er.

Under her pleading gaze, Ning Er’s reaction was straightforward–she vanished on the spot as if she had never been there.

Heavenly Father! She certainly didn’t want to be involved in cooking a Phoenix, even if they really weren’t Phoenixes, she still wouldn’t!

Seeing Ning Er take off, Dong Lei grabbed Uncle Song, who also seemed keen to escape, stuttering, “Uncle Song, I don’t want to be cooked, so I’ve got to cook them! But they are so big, you can’t just leave me to deal with it alone, you must help…”

Heavenly Father! She was actually about to kill Golden Pheasants that looked so much like Phoenixes. Would the Heavely Father strike her down with a thunderbolt?

Seeing this, Uncle Song’s face fell. Looking at the pitiful Dong Lei, he couldn’t bear to let her undertake such a sin alone.

“Come on, I’ll help you ‘kill the Phoenix’!” Uncle Song dragged Dong Lei closer to the two Golden Pheasants.

If I’m going to sin at this ripe old age, so be it!

Grateful, Dong Lei prayed silently with her hands together: Oh Mother in Heaven, please protect me from offending the Deities! If they’re just chickens, then so be it, but if they’re not… could they possibly forgive the ignorant?

Together, Uncle Song and Dong Lei, with no one in the Royal Mansion the wiser, accomplished the great task of slaughtering and cooking the chickens.

In less than a Shichen, savory meaty aromas wafted out of Dong Lei’s private kitchen.

In the huge ten-inch pot, the chicken meat and broth were abundant, enough to feed a whole family!

A certain prince, starved and playing doorman at the back gate, sniffed the distant and faint aroma with a nose like a dog’s, his mouth watering as the saliva secretion increased, “It smells so good! It must be Changsheng’s Mother cooking behind everyone’s back!”

“I knew it, she would never just eat carrots. Watch as I catch her red-handed eating all by herself!”

While saying this, Zhou Zongbao followed his nose towards the source of the smell.
