Flash Marriage: He is a Wife-pampering Addict

Chapter 1303: 1302 Common Topics

Bai Yiyi nodded slightly and said indifferently, “The police are responsible for the investigation of the drugs, I can’t be of much help here.”

When Gu Kai heard Bai Yiyi say she would take him home, his originally somber handsome face brightened slightly, and the atmosphere around him no longer felt as heavy. He said to Mo Xiuchen, “Call me if something comes up,” then turned around and left the pharmacy.

A hint of a smile appeared in Mo Xiuchen’s eyes as he told Bai Yiyi, “Drive carefully.”

Upon exiting the hospital, Bai Yiyi caught up with Gu Kai, and the two walked side by side to her car. Gu Kai pulled the car door open and sat in the passenger seat.

“Wasn’t Qing Feng supposed to drive you? How come you came to the hospital on your own, and in Ah Jin’s car?” Gu Kai tilted slightly, looking at Bai Yiyi with a puzzled gaze.

“After Qing Feng took me back to the factory, I sent him home,” Bai Yiyi blinked and strapped on her seatbelt while explaining, “I received a call from Zhang Siming, asking me to come to the hospital, so I drove President Wen’s car.”

“I’ve always found it strange. Didn’t I block Zhang Siming’s number last time? How did you still get his call?”

When Gu Kai asked this, his tone was very calm, showing no sign of anger, nor did it sound like an interrogation. After he finished speaking, he didn’t even look at Bai Yiyi but leaned back into his seat, raising a hand and lightly pressing on his temples.

Bai Yiyi’s brows furrowed slightly as she said indifferently, “He couldn’t get through on my phone, so he called with another number. If it wasn’t for the issue with the drugs, I wouldn’t have come to the hospital.”

“Mhm, let’s drive.”

Gu Kai twitched the corner of his mouth, putting an end to the conversation.

In his mind, Mo Xiuchen’s words echoed again and again, causing some inner conflict, and the hand on his temple unconsciously pressed harder.

He admitted that he had thoughts about Bai Yiyi, but every time, he forcefully suppressed them.

That night at her house, he had intended to say something, but Bai Yiyi spoke first, saying she didn’t want to get too close to him.

His pride and self-esteem wouldn’t allow him to lower himself to her, so for the following week, he didn’t seek her out.

As the car started moving, Bai Yiyi glanced at Gu Kai through the rearview mirror. Seeing his eyes downcast and his long fingers pressing on his temples, she hesitated before asking with concern, “Are you having a headache because you haven’t slept?”

“Mhm.”

Gu Kai looked up at her, his hand leaving his temple.

“How badly is your hand injured?”

Bai Yiyi asked again, her tone filled with concern.

A flash of surprise flickered in Gu Kai’s eyes, his somber mood brightening at her words, and the corners of his mouth curved involuntarily. The subtle arc softened the lines of his facial features.

“It won’t be useless, I just won’t be able to hold a scalpel for a while,” he said nonchalantly, as if the injury weren’t to his own hand.

Bai Yiyi’s brows furrowed lightly, “What about the surgeries you have scheduled?”

“Just need to switch doctors,” Gu Kai’s fine brows arched, he lowered his gaze, looking at her hands on the steering wheel, “I’ve decided to mentor Tongtong, to have her become a doctor when she grows up.”

“Ah?”

His topic jumped so suddenly that Bai Yiyi didn’t react immediately. A look of confusion flitted across her face, she blinked, and then a smile spread across her eyes again: “Yeah, Tongtong loves being a doctor so much, she’s completely obsessed.”

“That’s the power of genetics. Tongtong likes being a doctor so much, she’s definitely going to become a great one in the future,” Gu Kai said with a proud smile, “Those things she said over the phone, you didn’t teach her that, did you?”

At this thought, Gu Kai felt a wave of warmth in his heart.

Bai Yiyi chuckled, “How could I have taught her that, neither of us said a word.” The traffic light ahead turned red, and she stopped the car, turning her head to glance at his hand before continuing, “Ranran told me that Tongtong saw that scene on the news this morning, and she started crying, saying that your hand was bleeding and it must hurt.”

Gu Kai’s expression softened, giving Bai Yiyi the illusion that he was looking at her tenderly. She knew that Gu Kai was feeling this because of Tongtong, and yet, her mood also became more cheerful: “When I arrived at Ranran’s house, they were having breakfast. Ranran, afraid Tongtong would cry again, didn’t dare to bring you up. But Tongtong kept holding on to me, asking me to call you on the phone.”

“Really?”

Gu Kai’s smile broadened; his daughter truly was the most heartwarming little treasure. One shouldn’t underestimate children; their innocence allows them to keenly sense who has genuine affection for them.

If Gu Kai hadn’t showered Tongtong with so much love usually, how could she have cried about his injury and called him to say those things?

“Of course, if you don’t believe me, you can ask Ranran, and An Lin too, they were all there listening.”

Bai Yiyi and Gu Kai shared a common topic, and that was Tongtong.

In the beginning, they would argue because of this topic, but now, whenever Tongtong came up, it was like there were endless topics to talk about, and the atmosphere was especially warm.

Perhaps all parents are the same. Gu Kai chuckled and then said, “This morning, Fang Zhiwei came to the hospital after you left.”

“I saw her.”

Bai Yiyi did not expect Gu Kai to bring up Fang Zhiwei. Listening to him sounded like he was trying to explain something to her.

The cars ahead began to move, and she gripped the steering wheel again, restarting the drive. Gu Kai explained gently, “Fang Zhiwei also saw the news and called Ranran. It was probably because of Fang Zhiwei’s call that Ranran turned on the TV. But, I asked her to go back.”

Bai Yiyi didn’t know what to say, Gu Kai’s words unexpectedly stirred her emotions.

In the silence, a delicate atmosphere began to grow within the cramped car, spreading silently through the air.

After Gu Kai finished explaining, he said nothing more, just gazed gently at her hands holding the steering wheel—as delicate and fair as any hand model’s.

Bai Yiyi kept her eyes straight ahead, pretending not to notice that Gu Kai was watching her.

A few minutes later, Gu Kai’s voice filled the car again: “Let’s go pick up Tongtong first.”

It was implied that he wasn’t going home.

Bai Yiyi had originally planned to turn at the intersection ahead, but upon hearing his words, she subconsciously turned to look at him: “Aren’t you going home now?”

“Tongtong hasn’t seen me all day; she must miss me a lot.” Gu Kai’s face showed a touch of tender smile, making Bai Yiyi’s heart soften. However, thinking of the injury on his hand, her brow furrowed slightly: “After seeing Tongtong, you should go home to rest.”

“Hmm.” Gu Kai nodded, uncharacteristically taking Bai Yiyi’s advice.

Bai Yiyi blinked and teased, “People who are doctors, when they become patients themselves, do they tend to be more conscientious?”

Gu Kai raised an eyebrow: “Of course, if I’m not conscientious as a patient, how can I expect my patients to listen to me? Even though you’re not a doctor, I’ll take your words just now as you caring about me.”
