After Gu Kai placed the fruit basket in his hand on the table, he motioned towards the door. Wen Ran smiled and nodded, following him out of the ward. After lightly closing the door, she asked, “Older Brother Gu, did you specifically rush over to visit MO Xiuchen?”

“Yes, I heard you even came in the middle of the night. As MO Xiuchen’s good friend, wouldn’t it seem callous if I didn’t come?”

With a teasing tone, the laughter in Gu Kai’s eyes met Wen Ran’s as he curiously asked, “Ranran, how did you find out about MO Xiuchen’s hospitalization last night?”

The light in Wen Ran’s eyes flickered as she walked a few steps alongside him. They sat down on chairs in the corridor—far enough away not to disturb the sleeping MO Xiuchen, but close enough to keep others from disrupting him.

“I woke up in the early hours of the morning and couldn’t sleep, so I sent him a message. Unexpectedly, he called me back immediately. When I heard a voice on his end, I realized he was in the hospital.”

Wen Ran did not mention that it was a nightmare that had woken her up, and that it was because she felt unease in her heart that she had messaged MO Xiuchen.

Gu Kai laughed heartily, seemingly surprised and delighted that MO Xiuchen had been caught in the act, “It’s a good habit that you wake up in the middle of the night. Otherwise, that guy MO Xiuchen would’ve definitely kept it from you.”

Wen Ran smiled and didn’t respond.

“How’s his injury? I understand it’s not too serious, and will fully heal within half a month or so.”

As a doctor, Gu Kai had long been accustomed to illness and injury, and MO Xiuchen had suffered injuries over the years. He didn’t feel this was especially serious.

“Yes, it’s not very serious.”

Wen Ran understands that to Gu Kai, ‘serious’ means life-threatening.

Gu Kai continued chatting casually with her and then asked seemingly offhandedly, “Ranran, Yuting also happened to be in City C for a speaking engagement these past few days. Did you have a chance to meet her?”

Wen Ran watched Gu Kai’s smiling eyes and calmly replied, “Yes, Sister Ting brought breakfast and soup for MO Xiuchen early this morning. But MO Xiuchen is stubborn and refused to drink.”

She secretly speculated whether Shen Yuting had come at noon. She didn’t know.

“Did MO Xiuchen tell you the details of his injury?

If Wen Ran didn’t know that MO Xiuchen’s injury involved Shen Yuting, she wouldn’t have understood the implications of Gu Kai’s question. But she had heard from MO Xiuchen and understood the subtext, despite Gu Kai’s tactful demeanor.

“Older Brother Gu, are you trying to ask if I know Sister Ting was present when MO Xiuchen was injured? Or are you worried that I’m angry?”

Gu Kai was taken aback by her question, embarrassment flashing across his face. He chuckled awkwardly, “Ranran, you’re too clever, it’s really something!” “I’m not clever, you’ve just given too many hints.”

Wen Ran laughed warmly, showing no anger at Gu Kai’s probing. Without waiting for him to ask, she volunteered, “MO Xiuchen told me everything. Sister Ting happened to be present when he was injured, but it had nothing to do with her. The relative of the deceased already had malice towards him and brought a dagger.”

Gu Kai knew of Wen Ran’s goodness. Hearing her say this made him feel somewhat embarrassed. He was worried when he heard from Qin Mu that she had met Shen Yuting in the morning and that MO Xiuchen’s injury was somewhat related to Shen Yuting.

There was worry she would be jealous, would be angry.

He had rushed over in haste.

Besides wanting to see if she was angry, he also wanted Shen Yuting to proceed to City B as quickly as possible.

Her speaking engagement was originally scheduled to start from City B, but for some unknown reason, she had City B postpone for a few days while she came to City C first.

Gu Kai, being astute, had a fair understanding of the situation but chose not to expose Shen Yuting’s little scheme.

“Ranran, Yuting has had feelings for MO Xiuchen for a while now. Given your intelligence, you must have noticed it, right?”

This time, Gu Kai asked very directly. The conversation had gotten to a point where subtlety was no longer appropriate.

Wen Ran smiles gently and warmly, “Yes, I’ve noticed. It’s quite normal for Sister Ting to like MO Xiuchen, considering he’s such an exceptional man. I believe Sister Ting isn’t the kind of woman like Cheng Jia who would persistently pester him. Even if she openly expressed her liking for MO Xiuchen in the past, from now on, she’ll keep it to herself.”

Shen Yuting had left shortly after Ranran’s arrival in the ward this morning. She didn’t know whether she came at noon or was absent since then, but at least Shen Yuting hadn’t acted like Cheng Jia, presenting one face to MO Xiuchen and another to her in private.

She couldn’t stop Shen Yuting from liking MO Xiuchen. As long as Shen Yuting didn’t interfere with her marriage or use manipulative tactics to snatch her husband, she could turn a blind eye.

A complex emotion flashed in Gu Kai’s eyes. Watching Wen Ran’s fair and calm face and hearing her speak such words in a calm tone, for a moment, he didn’t know how to respond.

Let alone Wen Ran being his sister, even if she weren’t, he wouldn’t allow Shen Yuting to interfere in her marriage to MO Xiuchen.

“Ranran, don’t worry about this. Yuting wouldn’t dare to harm you or play tricks. If she did, I wouldn’t spare her.”

Gu Kai’s expression was serious, and his tone sincere. Wen Ran hadn’t expected him to say such a thing and blinked in surprise, saying lightly, “Older Brother Gu, if I didn’t know better, I’d think you were my cousin, not Sister Ting’s.”

Gu Kai burst out laughing, “I am acting on principle rather than personal relationship. While Yuting is my cousin, I have always treated you as a sister. I once mentioned that since you’ve called me ‘Older Brother Gut , I have to do something that suits the title.”

Wen Ran smiled, standing to say, “Let’s go back to the ward. MO Xiuchen should be waking up.”

“Alright!”

Gu Kai raised an eyebrow and stood up, accompanying her back to the ward.

In fact, MO Xiuchen had woken up as soon as Gu Kai had entered the ward earlier.

He was a light sleeper. Gu Kai hadn’t been particularly quiet, but it was enough to wake him.

He hadn’t immediately opened his eyes because he wanted Gu Kai and Wen Ran to have some time to chat alone. He understood how painful it was for Gu Kai to have found his sister without being able to acknowledge their relationship. “MO Xiuchen, how long have you been awake?”

Seeing MO Xiuchen leaning against the head of the bed, holding a newspaper in his hand, he didn’t look as though he had just woken up. There was a flicker of surprise in Wen Ran’s eyes as she smiled and walked towards him.

MO Xiuchen put down the newspaper and said gently, “I’ve been awake for a few minutes. I saw the fruit basket and guessed that someone had come to visit. You went out to talk, so I didn’t call for you.”

Gu Kai’s gaze met MO Xiuchen’s, and he understood that MO Xiuchen had actually been awake for a while. This realization warmed his heart.

He laughed, “I bought this fruit basket all the way from G City. The fruits inside are all nutritious and tasty. So, do you heal faster with Ranran by your side?”

MO Xiuchen’s smile was noncommittal, “Of course, why don’t you try finding someone to take care of you and see for yourself?”
