Chapter 691: Chapter 693: Scolding Son for the Sake of Wife

By the time Zhang Liangcai returned to Bai Ruozhu with a report, the government office had adjourned for the day.

”Miss, everything has developed as you anticipated,” said Zhang Liangcai, somewhat excitedly. ”Master Lv summoned several buyers to the government office. It turns out the so-called pearls were all fakes. The wife and child of Yu Xiaorong’s manager were flagrantly mistreated. Enraged, Master Lv promptly ordered the closure of Yu Xiaorong’s business, and publically subjected Madam Li to twenty large wooden boards. Li, who arrived too late to intervene, lost all face.” He finished, his eyes glittering with excitement.

These past few days, both Zhang Liangcai and Cui Fan have come to believe that they had been right in choosing to serve Bai Ruozhu. Although they had opportunities in Meng Residence, they felt that their futures would be even brighter under Bai Ruozhu’s guidance.

Upon hearing the news, Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help but stifle a chuckle. ”She deserved it,” she said. ”She deserved to be punished for using such underhanded methods and treating her servants so brutally.”

The members of Bai Family were all filled with joy upon hearing that their competitor had been shut down. They marveled, ’Heaven really does have eyes!’

Shaking his head, Zhang Liangcai chuckled to himself. The credit, he alleged, was not due to divine intervention, but to Bai Ruozhu’s abilities.

When they were alone, Jiang Yichun asked Bai Ruozhu, ”What magic potion did you give to Yu Xiaorong’s manager? He confessed so readily. Is there a chance we could use this potion in the future to make our job of questioning criminals easier?”

Bai Ruozhu gave him a playful nudge, ”Don’t get your hopes too high. This potion works only on ordinary people under special circumstances, like Yu Xiaorong’s manager, who had been imprisoned for some time. Most of the people we arrest at the government office are skilled in martial arts or have received special training, so it won’t be easy to get them to start talking using the potion. Otherwise, wouldn’t that be way too overpowered?”

”Fair point, I was being too simplistic,” Jiang Yichun sighed, but he didn’t look overly discouraged. It was just a thought he had, and he hadn’t really pinned his hopes on it.

”But aren’t you afraid that the potion wouldn’t work?” Jiang Yichun asked again.

Bai Ruozhu laughed, ”Not at all, even if the potion didn’t work, as long as the manager didn’t supply information about Madam Li, he wouldn’t be released from prison. I would still have other options to consider. Madam Li had done too many bad things; she was bound to slip up sooner or later.”

Jiang Yichun chuckled before affectionately ruffling Bai Ruozhu’s hair, messing up her hairdo.

Watching her laugh, with her hair slightly tousled, he felt a jolt in his heart. He leaned in and whispered in her ear, ”Is your menstrual cycle over yet?”

Bai Ruozhu’s face flushed. She lowered her gaze and softly replied, ”Give it one more day; it won’t be good otherwise.”

He sighed, his voice filled with restrained exasperation, before grabbing her hand and pleading, ”Then you have to help me.”

She stomped her foot in frustration, ”Can’t you hold back for just one night?”

He smiled, revealing a row of white teeth, ”I’m young and energetic, okay?”

”...”

The couple then proceeded to bathe their son, Dengdeng. At his age, Dengdeng was quite naughty. In the bathing tub, he deliberately made a mess and splashed water onto his parents. Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help but slap his little bottom, saying sternly, ”No more mischief, or Mommy will lose her temper!”

”Don’t hit the child! It’s normal for boys to be a little mischievous. If he becomes too well-behaved, he wouldn’t seem like a boy anymore,” Jiang Yichun, always the doting father, immediately stepped in to defend Dengdeng, seemingly afraid that Bai Ruozhu’s slap might hurt him.

Bai Ruozhu rolled her eyes at Jiang Yichun in exasperation. She hadn’t even hit Dengdeng that hard. People always say that a doting mother spoils the child, and yet in their family, it was the father who was the soft touch, not the mother!

Dengdeng might be young, but he was sly. Seeing his father siding with him, he became even more mischievous. However, he quickly settled down after being severely reprimanded by his mother.

After the bath, Bai Ruozhu lifted Dengdeng out of the wooden tub and laid him on the bed. He immediately threw a tantrum, kicking his chubby legs high into the air before forcefully rolling them back down onto the bed, causing a loud bang.

Jiang Yichun, worried Bai Ruozhu would get hurt, said, ”Let me do it.”

As soon as he started wiping Dengdeng dry, Jiang Yichun received a swift kick from his leg. Jiang Yichun laughed helplessly, ”Madam, you should have thought of a better childhood name for our son. Look how adept he is at kicking.”

”What do you mean by a better childhood name? He was kicking around in my belly, which is why he is named ’Dengdeng’. Anyway, he must have inherited his restlessness from his father!” Bai Ruozhu snapped.

Jiang Yichun burst out laughing, ”He must have inherited my amazing kicking skills; Dengdeng is born with martial arts talent.”

”Alright, enough talking. It’s still chilly, and if you keep on stalling like this, the child might catch a cold.” Bai Ruozhu muttered that men are undoubtedly unsuitable for taking care of children as she dressed Dengdeng in his small clothes. However, she let her guard down and got a kick from Dengdeng.

The kick caught Bai Ruozhu off guard and she yelped in surprise. Just as she was about to scold Dengdeng, she saw Jiang Yichun lifting Dengdeng’s chubby leg and spanking his little bum.

”Naughty boy! Your father never laid a hand on your mother, but you dare to raise your hand against her? This is your first lesson from me: if you dare hit your mother again, I will break your legs!” Jiang Yichun said sternly.

Bai Ruozhu just about managed to suppress her laughter. Just moments ago, he was overindulging Dengdeng, and now he wanted to break his legs. Wasn’t he being too fickle?

Dengdeng, who presumably had never seen his father so fierce before, pouted and looked like he was about to cry. However, a stern gaze from his father made him hold back his tears. His pitiful look of wanting to cry but not daring to do so was simply too cute. Bai Ruozhu had to suppress her laughter on seeing this. After all, she had to support her husband in disciplining their son.

This straightened Dengdeng out. Bai Ruozhu quickly dressed him and tucked him into bed. Dengdeng probably got his spirit back, for he started to sulk. He pouted and reached out to his mother for a cuddle, his big eyes filled with unshed tears. Bai Ruozhu softened on seeing this and leaned over to pick him up. He immediately wrapped his arms around her neck and planted a sloppy kiss on her cheek.

Jiang Yichun, though still sore, couldn’t bear to see his son sad. He moved closer and asked, ”Why don’t you want Daddy to hold you? Tell me, is it right to hit your mother?”

Of course, Dengdeng wouldn’t answer that. Seeing his father moving closer, he reached out to hug his neck, and then also planted a sloppy kiss on his cheek.

The stern look on Jiang Yichun’s face softened immediately. He hugged his son and returned his kiss, saying, ”Good boy, if you listen to your mother in the future, Daddy will love you even more. When you grow up, I’ll take you horse-riding and teach you how to run up walls and roofs, okay?”

Seeing his father wasn’t angry anymore, Dengdeng’s mood lifted, and a smile reappeared on his face.

Bai Ruozhu looked at Jiang Yichun, feeling a warm fuzziness in her heart. Even though he overly doted on their son, he always prioritized her. He would not allow their child to little respect towards his mother, and insisted that their son listen to her. Beneath his indulgence, he did possess a set of principles.
