Chapter 136: Flexible Starch Sheet

”Serves them right! It’s better for those locusts to die!”

”What a sin, ah! Without the grain, how can our family live?”

”Fortunately, we listened to the Village Chief and harvested our grain earlier. Otherwise, we would have ended up like them. Next year, their families will definitely have a hard time surviving.”

A similar conversation was happening throughout the village, except in Fu Chen’an’s family.

After he helped the villagers harvest the crops, the sun had slanted to the west. At this moment, Fu Chen’an was wiping his body inside their room.

He glanced at the window and asked, ”Wife, what is that item you stuck on the window?”

Yao Zhi was mending her husband’s torn trousers when she heard this. Raising her head, she glanced at the bioplastic and replied, ”That’s a flexible starch sheet I bought at the border market.”

That bioplastic was obtained by exchanging the trash she stored in the System’s storage. Although this plastic was PHA plastic, she couldn’t tell her husband the truth. So, she used a name that fit this era.

If her husband wanted it, she could make bioplastic using starch, oil, lard, and fish glue. All the materials were available in this era, but the quality of the products would be lower than that of the PHA plastic.

Not knowing what his wife was thinking, Fu Chen’an put on his clothes and went to check the so-called flexible starch sheet.

He touched it and was surprised to see that it was actually very thin. No wonder it was almost transparent. He pulled it lightly and noticed that it was not only durable but also flexible. This was a good item!

”Wife, do we have more at home?” he asked.

”The merchant said he only had that much left, and I exchanged it using 20 jin of grains. It’s very expensive.”

Hearing this, Fu Chen’an was disappointed. He thought that if they could get more of this flexible starch sheet, their tents wouldn’t leak when it rained.

Noticing his disappointment, Yao Zhi hesitated for a moment before she said, ”Actually, I asked the merchant how to make it, and he told me the rough idea.”

”Although I don’t have the complete recipe and method, we can try to make it. Maybe we will be able to create something similar.”

The moment she said this, Fu Chen’an was stunned. It took him a while to recover his composure, and he walked to the bed.

Sitting beside his wife, he looked at her for a long time before he said, ”Wife, if I remember correctly, your maternal grandfather was a Xiucai, while your paternal family were farmers.”

”None in your family were craftsmen. Where did you learn crafting things?” he asked.

When she heard this, Yao Zhi’s hand stopped for a split second before she continued mending the trousers as if nothing happened.

”I learned it by myself,” she said as she cut the thread. After a moment of pause, she continued, ”You know that my mother passed away not long after she gave birth to me.”

”After my father married his second wife, he stopped caring about me. Living under my stepmother and surrounded by my stepsiblings, I had to learn some skills to survive. So, I often went to town to do rough jobs and learned some skills from the masters.”

”Is this why you know a lot of things?” Fu Chen’an asked.

”Well, I did learn a lot of things, but most of them are just superficial knowledge. Just enough for me to do my job well and earn some money,” Yao Zhi said with a smile.

What she said was not lies. These were the original soul’s experiences during her childhood.

Whenever she slept, she would dream about these things once in a while. Although she didn’t inherit all of the original soul’s memories, at least she knew some of them, which made it easier for her to adapt to this identity.

Fu Chen’an observed his wife in silence. Even though he had his doubts, he did know the situation in her family, and all she said was the same as the things his parents told him.

At this moment, he became more confused. Was the soul inside this body the real one, or was it another soul?

If it were another soul, how could she know so clearly about what happened in her childhood?

If it were the real soul, what made her personality and habits undergo such a drastic change?

While he was lost in his thoughts, Yao Zhi observed him.

For a moment, she thought that her cover had been blown. Fortunately, no evidence could prove that she was an imposter. After all, her body was real. Only the soul was different.

Reaching this conclusion, her heart calmed down, and she said, ”Husband, it’s almost dinner. I will cook something for you. You have been working for so many days. You should take a rest first.”

”Okay.”

Before leaving the room, Yao Zhi wore her veiled hat and a coat made from old clothes.

To avoid locusts entering the room, she sprinkled some water mixed with Sha Wu Hen powder around the house. Because of this, the locusts didn’t dare to go close to the balcony.

As soon as she left the room, she quickly closed the door and ran to the kitchen. Every step she took, there was a crunchy sound coming from under her feet. There were so many locusts that they were everywhere.

It only took her several minutes to reach the kitchen.

She also sprinkled some Sha Wu Hen powder around the kitchen, so there were no locusts inside. Even with the powder, she didn’t dare to leave the door and window open.

Fortunately, she asked Yang Dalang to make a chimney and connect it to her stove, avoiding her being poisoned by smoke even when the door and window were tightly closed.

She didn’t want to stay in the kitchen for too long, so she decided to make stir-fried vegetables, pan-fried Chinese sausage, and fried eggs. For staples, she just took out 10 mantous from her System’s storage.

It took her 20 minutes to finish cooking. After she placed all the food in a 3-layered bamboo basket, she left the kitchen and returned to the room.
