Chapter 114: Selling Vegetables ( 1 )

Since she used a whole chicken, Yao Zhi ended up making enough soup for 15 people. But considering the appetite of the soldiers, she didn’t have to worry about wasting food.

If they couldn’t finish it, she could just let her husband share it with his comrades. It would help him build a good rapport with them.

Swords and spears had no eyes, and her husband might face dangerous situations during battle. Having more good friends might save his life in battle.

While she had no worries, Fu Chen’an was stunned by the portion. He looked at the huge pot and asked, ”Wife, why did you make so much soup?”

”I put too much water when cooking and ended up with this huge pot,” Yao Zhi replied as she ladled a bowl of soup for him. ”If we can’t finish it, just share it with your brothers.”

Hearing this, Fu Chen’an reached into his clothes and took out a silver ingot. Seeing this, Yao Zhi’s eyes widened. ”Husband, where did you get this silver?” she asked.

”The General gave it to me.”

”Why did the General suddenly give you 10 taels of silver? Did you make another contribution?” Yao Zhi asked excitedly.

It’s really great to marry such a hardworking and ambitious husband!

Meeting her bright eyes, Fu Chen’an coughed and said, ”This money is for you.”

Yao Zhi pointed at herself and asked with doubts, ”For me?”

Fu Chen’an nodded and explained, ”Yesterday, I shared 2 pancakes and a bowl of mung bean soup with Cook Li. Unexpectedly, he sent the food to the General.”

”Lately, the General was losing his appetite and often skipped his meals. Since he was still injured, Physician Mu asked Cook Li to prepare nourishing food. But with limited ingredients, no matter how skilled Cook Li was, he was still unable to prepare food that suited the General’s taste.”

After he said this, Yao Zhi understood immediately and asked, ”So, the General wanted me to cook for him?”

”Mhmm. This is the payment for the ingredients and your labor fee. Every month, the General will pay you 10 taels of silver.”

When she heard this, Yao Zhi was delighted. Although she could earn money by selling sauces, she couldn’t sell them too often, or it would arouse suspicion. After all, soy sauce and fish sauce took a long time to make.

But this job was different.

10 taels of silver were a huge amount in this era. For a family of farmers, it would take them at least several years to save this amount.

As long as she had this job, she didn’t have to worry about how to explain where she got the white flour and rice she ate. With this thought, she took the money and said, ”Husband, I want to do this job.”

Fu Chen’an stared at her for a moment before asking, ”Wife, are you sure you want to do this job? Cooking for the General will be tiring. You need to prepare 2 meals daily.”

Yao Zhi nodded and replied, ”Husband, I have nothing to do at home. I can send over lunch and dinner at noon. When the General wants to have dinner, he only needs to heat the food.”

After he was sure that his wife was not joking, Fu Chen’an finally said, ”Alright. I will inform the General later.”

”Since I brought a lot of food today, you can give it to the General later. Since we accept his money, we should fulfill our responsibility.”

Fu Chen’an looked at the food and said, ”Wife, giving the General our leftovers... it seems not appropriate.”

Waving her hands, Yao Zhi chuckled and said in a low voice, ”Husband, if you and I say nothing, the General won’t know.”

Looking at his wife’s mischievous smirk, Fu Chen’an smiled and nodded. ”I will listen to you.”

The two of them finished their meal in less than 20 minutes. Afterward, Yao Zhi packed the food and handed the 3-layered lunch box to her husband.

”Husband, I can’t stay for too long. I need to go sell the vegetables.”

Hearing this, Fu Chen’an held her hand and said, ”Wife, can you wait for a while? I want to ask Cook Li if he wants to buy your vegetables.”

”Okay,” Yao Zhi agreed readily.

For her, selling the vegetables to the military barracks or to a restaurant was the same.

Even if the price offered by the military was lower, she would still sell to them. After all, only with a balanced diet could the soldiers have healthy bodies to fight the enemy.

When Fu Chen’an entered the General’s tent, Lu Qianxuan was waiting for him. Seeing him carrying a layered lunch box, he put down the report in his hand and said, ”Fu Chen’an, you are here.”

Fu Chen’an placed the lunch box on the table and bowed before him as he said, ”This subordinate greets the General.”

Lu Qianxuan was hungry and waved his hand impatiently. ”No need for formalities. Bring the food over.”

Noticing his eagerness, Fu Chen’an didn’t dare to delay. He brought over the lunch box and took out the food.

The moment Lu Qianxuan saw the steamed bun bigger than his face, he couldn’t help but praise Fu Chen’an’s wife for her generosity.

The steamed bun looked soft and white. It was clear that it was made using white flour. From its shape, it seemed there was a filling too. What’s more, he was given 2 steamed buns!

Besides the big steamed bun, there was a plate of green vegetables, a plate of eggs with red vegetables, and also something that looked like milk. When he thought that this was all, he saw a bowl of soup placed on his desk.

The amount of food was enough for 2 meals. The food was still warm, and the fragrance from the dishes ignited his appetite. He picked up his chopsticks and reached for the egg dish.

Seeing this, Fu Chen’an asked, ”General, don’t you need to test for poison first?”
