Chapter 40: Donating Grains ( 9 )

Steward Han observed the young man before him for a moment before he gestured for her to enter. ”Young Master Lei, please come inside. The General Wife is already waiting for you.”

Yao Zhi nodded and said, ”Please lead the way.”

Since they were not allowed to bring weapons into the General’s mansion, Luo Bo and his brothers had to hand their weapons to the guards before they followed Yao Zhi and went to the front hall.

As they walked, Yao Zhi looked at the mansion and noticed that while the mansion was vast, the decoration was simple but elegant.

They took several turns and walked past several corridors before they arrived at the hall. When they arrived, Yao Zhi saw a woman in her early twenties sitting at the main seat.

Steward Han led them inside and bowed to the woman before saying, ”Madam, I have brought the guests over.”

Yao Zhi took a step forward, cupped her fists, and said, ”Greetings, Madam. My name is Lei Feng, and I’m a merchant from the south.”

The General’s wife observed him for a moment before she nodded and said, ”Young Master Lei, there is no need for formality. Please have a seat.”

After they took their seats, the maidservants brought over tea and snacks.

Only after they served the tea did the General’s wife say, ”Young Master Lei, I heard from Steward Han that you are here to donate grains. You come from afar, and it’s not easy to transport the grains. Are you really willing to donate your grains?”

Yao Zhi took a sip of her tea before she replied, ”Madam, I’m a merchant, and as a merchant, I won’t do a money-losing business.”

Hearing this, the suspicions in Xue Ya’er’s heart lessened a little. If this person donated the grains without asking for anything, she wouldn’t be at ease. But now that he clearly wanted something, this was an equal transaction.

After a moment of silence, Yao Zhi continued, ”Before coming, I gathered some information about the announcement posted in the town. To be honest, my family didn’t lack money, but we love collecting rare treasures.”

”I heard that the General is willing to exchange his private treasures for grains. If this matter is true, then I won’t mind exchanging my grains.”

Xue Ya’er nodded and replied, ”This matter is indeed true. My General Mansion has a lot of rare treasures. As long as Young Master Lei is willing to part with your grains, I will lead you to the treasury personally, and you can take your pick.”

Yao Zhi was feeling excited, but thanks to her mask, she appeared calm, and no one was able to read her expressions. After all, this mask only had a slight smile expression beside a deadpan expression.

She took another sip of her tea to calm down before she said, ”Madam, I have a total of ten thousand dan of millet stored in my warehouse. I wonder how many treasures I could exchange with this amount?”

At first, both Xue Ya’er and Steward Han thought that no matter how much grain a merchant had, at most, he would only bring several thousands dan of grain. Unexpectedly, he had doubled their expectations.

It took Xue Ya’er a moment to regain her composure and say, ”Since the value of the treasures is based on appreciation, it will be hard to determine the right price.”

Hearing this, Yao Zhi nodded and replied, ”Madam, I’m a merchant, and I don’t understand much about appreciating treasures. I believe every item has its price, including treasures.”

After a moment of pause, she added, ”How about we follow the market price to make it easier for the exchange?”

When she heard this, Xue Ya’er hesitated.

Compared to the price of grains that kept rising, the price of antiques and rare treasures kept dropping. If they used this standard for the exchange, she might have to empty the General’s personal treasury before she could gather enough grains requested by her husband.

As if noticing her hesitation, Yao Zhi said, ”Madam, as a citizen of the Great Yan, I have my responsibility to defend my country. Since I can’t go to the battlefield to kill the enemy, at least I have to contribute something.”

The moment she said this, everyone looked at her. Xue Ya’er couldn’t help but stare at her with doubts.

Raising her fingers, Yao Zhi continued, ”Madam, I’m willing to use last week’s price of grains for this exchange. Four wen for a jin of grain.”

As soon as she heard this, Xue Ya’er asked, ”Young Master Lei, are you sure you want to go with this price? The current price of grains is eight wen for a jin of millet.”

”If Madam thinks my price is too low, I won’t mind following the current price,” Yao Zhi said with a chuckle.

Fearing that she would change her mind, Xue Ya’er quickly said, ”We will go with four wen for a jin.” After a moment of pause, she asked, ”Young Master Lei, when will you be able to do the exchange?”

”At this moment, my grains are stored in the warehouse not far from here. Madam can send some people to follow me back, and I will pick the treasure after the grains are delivered.”

When she heard this, Xue Ya’er agreed readily, ”I will let Steward Han supervise the transport.”

Knowing that they had reached an agreement, Yao Zhi stood up and cupped her fists. ”Since time is essential, let’s not waste any more time. Madam, I will take my leave first.”

Xue Ya’er stood up and said, ”Young Master Lei, I will wait for you.”

As someone who had worked for the General family for years, Steward Han was efficient. In ten minutes, he had already arranged a group of soldiers and several carts to follow Yao Zhi and her group.

When they arrived at the warehouse, Steward Han couldn’t help but be surprised to see a group of martial artists guarding the area.
