I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 957: Chapter 956: How Could This Happen?

Jing Changle didn’t dare linger. Head down, he quickly walked into the supply and marketing cooperative; they sold red-threaded writing paper and kraft envelopes here, but stamps had to be bought at the post office.

After buying those two things, Jing Changle spent some money on a pencil as well before leaving the cooperative. There was no post office in the village; they had to go to the nearby county seat.

He bought some food on the way. Since he had a bit of money, he wasn’t going to starve himself.

”Is that kid from this village?”

As Jing Changle headed toward the edge of the village, the older policeman at the door asked the old man selling mountain goods beside him.

The old man glanced over and shook his head. ”Very unfamiliar, doesn’t look like he’s from this village.”

The policeman was a bit puzzled. A six‑year‑old boy buying envelopes and writing paper was already strange enough. Never mind that envelopes and paper weren’t cheap—at that age, the most likely thing he’d buy should be snacks, right?

And a five‑ or six‑year‑old kid, can he even write a letter? If he can, who would he be writing to?

This officer was a very seasoned policeman with strong anti‑reconnaissance instincts, so this seemingly unnoticed move by Jing Changle ended up catching his eye.

After all, the one they were looking for was just about that age. The problem was, they’d searched so many places, and the kid was like he’d evaporated into thin air—nowhere to be found.

A whole group of experienced officers couldn’t find a single child. Wouldn’t people laugh their heads off if they heard that!

The more they couldn’t find him, the more some officers dug their heels in, to the point they’d stopped even caring about the why.

”Follow that kid.” The officer called to his partner and went after Jing Changle.

Even if it wasn’t him, following to take a look wouldn’t delay anything.

Jing Changle had no experience after all; how could he possibly shake off seasoned officers? Even though he kept stopping to look around, they still tailed him tightly.

Seeing how jittery and ”guilty‑looking” Jing Changle was, the two officers grew even more suspicious.

They trailed him all the way out of the village to a small nearby village. After passing through it, Jing Changle didn’t keep going outward but slipped into a collapsed, dilapidated courtyard.

Courtyards like this were everywhere in the countryside; in many alleys, almost every house was like that because most people living there were of the same generation. Once that generation died off, some houses ended up unmanaged, and some had their main beams pulled out on purpose to let them collapse.

So this alley basically had no residents at all, and at this hour there were hardly any passersby either. It felt all the quieter, and if you hid here, even the villagers might not find you.

The two officers hid behind a big jujube tree and watched. As soon as they saw Jing Changle step into the ruined courtyard, a child came out to meet him.

The moment they saw that child, even though his face was smeared with something black, the two officers still recognized him at a glance!

It really was him!

This kid was quite something, actually managing to hide to this extent. If they hadn’t noticed Jing Changle, no one would have thought he was hiding here!

Two kids, no matter how good they were at hiding, had no chance facing two adults head‑on—let alone two officers who knew some grappling techniques.

So the two officers hadn’t even thought about calling in their colleagues; they planned to grab Luo Yirui as quickly as possible and put an end to this baffling arrest operation.

The two officers split up to encircle from both sides, worried that Luo Yirui might slip away under the cover of the other child. They weren’t bandits, after all; if he really did get away, it’s not like they could do anything to the other kid.

Luo Yirui was just about to write the letter first and then go with Jing Changle to the nearby county seat. Once they bought stamps, they’d mail it on the spot and immediately leave.

The plan was pretty good, but he had just taken out the spirit, ready to start writing, when he heard a noise outside.

Luo Yirui snapped his head up to look out. Could it be village kids coming here to play?

Jing Changle frowned. He knew that local kids generally didn’t come to places like this to play, because most of these old houses had had people die in them. Some villagers considered that inauspicious—especially since this wasn’t even their own ancestral home.

At this point there was no need to guess. Luo Yirui and Jing Changle were already peering through the broken window, watching two officers slowly closing in.

Jing Changle felt a stab of regret when he saw the two policemen. They had definitely followed him here!

Luo Yirui’s expression grew grave. Two adults were already very hard for them to handle, let alone two seasoned officers!

If he didn’t deal with this properly, he was definitely going to get caught.

Luo Yirui quickly pulled out a prepared Paralysis Talisman and clenched it in his palm, then shot Jing Changle a look. The two of them crouched down and moved over to the base of the wall.

Jing Changle started signaling with his hands, and Luo Yirui understood after watching once.

His meaning was: once the two officers came in, he would lunge at them, and then Luo Yirui would set off the explosive talisman. Once the officers’ bodies went numb, they’d run together.

That was one way to do it. Luo Yirui thought it over and agreed.

The two officers approached from left and right. Not hearing any movement inside, they figured the two kids still hadn’t noticed; they were just children, after all, with poor vigilance.

As long as they blocked the doorway, they’d be able to catch Luo Yirui. As for the other one, they’d take him back to the station and have his parents pick him up.

By the time the two officers had surrounded the entrance, they were sure Luo Yirui couldn’t run. No matter how capable a kid was, he was still just a kid—what, was he going to fly into the sky?

The two officers appeared one in front and one behind at the doorway, and a dark figure immediately lunged at them. They were prepared; one officer dodged, and the one behind, seeing it was a child, didn’t move aside but spread his arms to restrain him.

Seeing that Jing Changle had drawn the officers’ attention, Luo Yirui instantly flicked out two fighting talismans, sending them shooting toward the two officers’ faces.

Two fighting talismans were the limit he could fully control; if he tried to cast one more, accidents and uncertainty might occur.

The two officers instinctively raised their arms to block as they saw something flying toward them, but before it could touch them, it detonated with a ”bang,” and a jolt of numbness shot through their bodies!

The officers felt their bodies go numb and quickly lost control, dropping heavily to the ground. The paralysis wasn’t just in their limbs; even their faces couldn’t show any expression. But the shock and disbelief in their eyes was impossible to hide.

What just happened?

Did this kid have some kind of chemical weapon in his hands? Why couldn’t they move their bodies?

As they were thinking that, the thoroughly crippling numbness suddenly began to ebb.

Luo Yirui walked out and helped Jing Changle up. He had been certain the two officers had lost all mobility, but when he turned his head, he saw their bodies beginning to stir again.

He was startled. This was a sign they were getting their movement back!

How was that possible? The officers’ spirit wasn’t that strong, so how come, after being hit by his fighting talisman, they were already starting to recover in under two minutes?!
