I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 951: Chapter 950: Eating Bran

Luo Yirui saw a stool on the ground, placed it in a flat spot, and sat down, watching the old man from a distance.

Not sure if the old man sensed Luo Yirui’s gaze, he slowly opened his eyes, his cloudy eyes glanced at him, and then closed them again.

Luo Yirui sighed with his eyes downcast and stood up to help Jing Changle.

Seeing the joy on Jing Changle’s profile, he knew it was because the old man nodded, indicating he was feeling better.

Jing Changle really cares for this old man, but...

Luo Yirui felt very conflicted and confused. He thought he should tell Jing Changle, to prevent him from being too devastated later, but if he told him in advance, wouldn’t he be sad anyway?

Isn’t having a mental preparation better?

Whenever the truth was at the tip of his tongue, Luo Yirui couldn’t say it when he saw Jing Changle’s smiling face; he swallowed it down, yet he wanted to say it again. Such a young child had never been so conflicted before.

When he had his parents around, he seemed to never have to think about these issues nor did he ever encounter them. Now, alone, all kinds of problems come one after another.

Even when Jing Changle fed the old man the mush, Luo Yirui still didn’t speak out, but his face full of conflict betrayed him.

”With that look on your face, what do you want to say?” Jing Changle glanced at him and asked.

If he hadn’t asked, Luo Yirui might have continued to be conflicted, but since he asked, it’s better to say it all in one breath.

”Jing Changle, your grandfather... probably can’t make it... uh... Why are you hitting me!” Luo Yirui had just finished speaking when Jing Changle pushed him to the ground.

Luo Yirui was furious, but when he raised his head, he found Jing Changle’s eyes were red; his expression was fierce, pointing at him and saying, ”Don’t talk nonsense; Doctor Sun said grandfather will get better, and grandfather himself said he feels much better today!”

Seeing Jing Changle like this, Luo Yirui suddenly couldn’t get angry. Is he... deceiving himself?

Watching Jing Changle turn furiously and go into the house, Luo Yirui stood up, dusted off the dirt, and stood in place, sighing.

Not sure if it’s an illusion, he always felt Jing Changle should know, but the joy on his face was genuine, and it didn’t seem like he knew.

He sighed again, realizing that the longer he walked alone, the more he felt Uncle Yuan was right, wanting to help his mom; there’s a long road ahead, not at all as simple and easy as he imagined.

His one sentence made Jing Changle tear up; he felt it was better to let himself calm down, so he simply sat on the hillside.

This place is the only relatively flat spot on the hillside; the little house is built here, pretty stable, but such a house might not withstand the wind and rain.

It’s unclear how long Jing Changle has been living here alone.

Never thought, under the same blue sky, there could be children having completely different experiences from him.

While thinking, Luo Yirui saw Jing Changle come out with a cold expression, carrying a bowl and placing it in front of him, then turned around silently and walked away.

Luo Yirui looked down, the bowl had half a bowl of rice mixed with mostly bran; he’d heard his grandma talk about this before, couldn’t help being curious, picked up chopsticks to put one bite into his mouth.

The feeling while chewing was indescribable, initially thought it was awful, but didn’t expect the real challenge was swallowing!

This thing hurt the throat when swallowing!

Luo Yirui only ate one bite and stopped; he was a bit angry, feeling Jing Changle was too stingy, was this deliberate difficulty because of earlier things!

Thinking this, he carried the bowl inside, just about to question Jing Changle if he considers him a friend, saw Jing Changle crouching, eating with a bowl.

The bowl contained only bran, not a single grain of rice!

Something seemed to choke him; Luo Yirui couldn’t speak, Jing Changle had given him all the rice, or perhaps he never really eats rice usually, only made some for him...

”What?” Jing Changle saw Luo Yirui come in but didn’t speak, asking.

Luo Yirui was silent for two seconds and said, ”I want some water.”

Jing Changle was taken aback, scratched his head, stood up, and scooped a ladle of water from the small water tank for him, said, ”If you’re not used to this food, I’ll go to the big village later to buy something for you.”

He assumed that Luo Yirui, looking so disheveled, wouldn’t have money on him, but his own money wasn’t plentiful either, all earned from odd jobs.

Luo Yirui took the ladle and gulped it down, cooling his stomach, which extinguished a lot of his emotions.

After drinking the water, Luo Yirui returned to normal, stayed inside, and said, ”It’s fine, nothing I’m not used to.”

After speaking, he began eating in big mouthfuls, even though the bran was still as hard to swallow as before... but maybe his mindset had changed, he eventually finished the bowl.

Then he remembered, grandma said that during the period when dad was on a special mission, the family’s meals weren’t much better than this, at that time he had an uncle who was thinner than a monkey, then mom exploded, and things gradually improved at home.

So, this stuff, mom, grandpa, grandma, and uncle all had eaten; when he returns, he can proudly tell them he’s also endured hardships!

Jing Changle watched Luo Yirui finish the bowl of food with a conflicted face, feeling inexplicably touched, though couldn’t pinpoint exactly why.

Although the bowl had many chips, Jing Changle had washed it thoroughly, sparing the water in the home tank but usually going to the small creek outside the village to wash, where sometimes there were fish to catch, and during the right season, they could have fish meat.

Jing Changle returned to normal, holding the bowl and smiling while walking back, talking with Luo Yirui along the way.

As they walked, a twelve or thirteen-year-old girl stopped him in his tracks.

This girl had two big braided pigtails, wore a flowery jacket riddled with patches, at that moment she had her hands on her hips, pointed at Jing Changle, and began scolding.

”You dare come to our village again; are you looking for a beating from my dad!”

Jing Changle’s smile vanished entirely upon seeing the girl.

”Dad didn’t hit you hard enough last time, and you dare use our village’s water to wash dishes! Dad! The little bastard is in the village again!” The girl, seeing Jing Changle’s cold expression, worried he might hit, shouted loudly.

Jing Changle was really angry, grabbed Luo Yirui’s hand, ”Hurry up, let’s go!”

Saying so, the two of them circumvented the girl, running towards the hillside.

Luo Yirui looked back, saw a farmer carrying a shovel walking toward them quickly, pointing at them, threatening, but the distance made it hard to hear clearly.
