Rebirth in the 90s: Her Counterattack and Redemption

Chapter 1386: Chapter 824: See Clearly

After Xue Fengqi escorted Luo Ye and Zhu Hongyu back to their quarters, he thought for a moment, then decided to first drop by the women’s company to give them a heads-up so they could get ready in advance.

This was technically a bit out of his jurisdiction, but the Xue Family’s main base was right here in Jinzhong, and Xue Fengqi was easygoing by nature. No one would really say anything about him occasionally overstepping.

Of course, he was mainly doing this to fulfill his duty as a friend. After all, he and Zhu Hongyu had grown up together as childhood sweethearts, and the fact that her first stop was their unit was also a show of respect to the Old Xue Family. He had to play the good host.

The women’s company commander, Qin Jianqi, was standing outside Ninth Company’s tent. From afar, when she saw Xue Fengqi, she grinned and teased, ”Well, if it isn’t Commander Xue in person. What brings you here?”

Xue Fengqi wagged a finger at her. ”Go on, be sour. Keep it up and I won’t tell you when there’s something good.”

Qin Jianqi’s eyes lit up immediately. ”Judging from that tone, the person in charge of the Female Special Forces Team isn’t here already, is she?”

”Bingo. The official selection starts tomorrow. Get everyone prepped, but don’t overwork them. The admissions are based on data—if none of them make the cut, we’ll really lose face.”

Qin Jianqi curled her lip. ”Got it. You really underestimate the women of Ninth Company. Tell me, when have we ever done worse than you men in any competition?”

”All right, all right, slip of the tongue, okay?” Xue Fengqi shook his head and sighed. ”Talking to women is exhausting.”

”Exhausting how?” Qin Jianqi stepped closer to him. ”I haven’t even called you a walking disaster yet, and you dare spout nonsense here?”

”How am I a walking disaster?” Xue Fengqi looked genuinely puzzled.

Qin Jianqi shot him a sidelong glance. ”You know why I’m the only one outside the tent?”

”You’re the company commander. Everyone else is training while you slack off, obviously.”

”Screw you!” Qin Jianqi gave him a disgruntled shove. ”The vice captain is behind the tent holding a meeting with the women. Any idea what kind of meeting?”

”How the hell would I know what kind of meeting you’re holding?” Xue Fengqi lifted a brow. ”Don’t tell me you’re plotting how to pick out a suitable husband from the male ranks?”

”Screw you, nothing decent ever comes out of that dog mouth of yours!” Qin Jianqi kicked him lightly. ”Isn’t it all because of you? I’m not saying you’re a bad person, but honestly, how can you have so little sense of boundaries? You stir up trouble and then we’re the ones who have to clean up the mess...”

Xue Fengqi hurriedly cut her off. ”Whoa, whoa, what kind of mess are you babbling about? Spell it out. I’m telling you, I don’t shoulder black pots for nothing.”

”What are you doing batting your eyes at the women for, huh? Now look what’s happened—several of them are at each other’s throats over you in private.

If one of the squad members hadn’t reported it, the vice captain and I would still be in the dark. Tell me, if that doesn’t make you a walking disaster, what does?”

”Hey, when did I ever bat my eyes at the women?” Xue Fengqi protested, looking utterly wronged. ”I don’t even know how to bat my eyes, okay? Don’t just slap a label on me like that.”

”Wronging you?” Qin Jianqi tapped her forehead. ”Fine, maybe it wasn’t intentional. But honestly, what are you doing being a big man and having fox eyes like that?

And besides, almost everyone knows you’re the Crown Prince of the Xue Family. These girls are eighteen, nineteen, twenty at most—it’s the perfect age for daydreaming.

You smile at them a couple of times, say a few extra words, and they can go back and overthink it for half a day. And you don’t even watch yourself.

This time we caught it early thanks to Xing. If it really escalated into some jealous catfight with blood spilled, you’d be famous across the board.”

Xue Fengqi shook his head helplessly. ”My face is my parents’ doing, can’t blame me for that. Fine, from now on, unless it’s absolutely necessary, I won’t smile.”

”Don’t be like that. You’re not that good-looking to begin with—if you don’t smile, you’ll just disappear in a crowd. If that ends up costing you a decent wife, the guilt will crush me.

What I mean is, you can smile, just don’t smile at any one woman in particular. Got it?”

”Don’t get it.” Xue Fengqi shook his head. ”Far as I remember, I’ve never smiled at any woman one-on-one. If I smiled, it was just saying hi when I saw you or Qi Yan.

If that’s enough to make some people misunderstand, then I promise from now on, when I see you two I’ll either not say hi, or say hi with a straight face. You run this by Qi Yan later, don’t let her think I’m deliberately giving her attitude.”

”Oh? Don’t tell me you’re into Vice Captain Qi?” Qin Jianqi looked him up and down. ”Be honest. Be honest and I’ll help you out.”

”Qin Lian, can we please act a little more proper?” Xue Fengqi took two steps back. ”You like this, you’re totally wrecking that stern, upright image you’ve built in front of the women.”
