Office

Xu Qigang’s chiseled handsome face was icy cold until he saw the list on the table, then a hint of softness crossed his determined expression.

“Liu Chun, ask the squad leader of the fourth team to come see me.”

“Yes!” Liu Chun hurried off, and it wasn’t long before the office door was knocked on.

“Reporting, Captain, the squad leader of the fourth team, Chen Yingjie, is here to report!” A deep, pleasant male voice sounded outside the door.

...

“Come in!”

The door was pushed open, and the one who entered was Chen Yingjie, the squad leader of the fourth team who had been absent from the previous meeting. He was the youngest among the four squad leaders, but also the most ruthless, earning him the nickname Chen Fengzi.

He had come down from the battlefield with Xu Qigang.

“Captain, what did you want to see me about?” Chen Yingjie asked in a relaxed manner as he entered.

He was rather slim and not as tall and imposing as Xu Qigang, who exuded a strong sense of security at first glance. On the contrary, Chen Yingjie had delicate features, and if it weren’t for his stern demeanor, he would appear somewhat effeminate.

“Why did you neglect the female comrades during the collective training?”

“Who wants to lead a group of women playing house? If you’re not careful, you might lose your life,” Chen Yingjie said with disdain. “If you want to assign it, give it to someone else; I’m not doing it. If you really want me to train someone, send those people from the Provincial Rescue Center so I can knock some sense into them.” I heard those people are quite arrogant; it would be a good chance to tone down their haughtiness and let them know that Lord Ma has three eyes.

“Heh… I think you’re growing capable. If anyone from the Provincial Rescue Center needs training, I will personally take charge,” Xu Qigang scoffed, scolding Chen Yingjie thoroughly before giving him an ultimatum, “Get back to training immediately. If there’s even the slightest mistake, I’ll break your legs.”

Chen Yingjie quickly jumped back three steps, his bones still aching faintly. “Captain, why do you insist on assigning the female comrades to me?” Teams one, two, and three are all eager to take on the training!

Xu Qigang stroked his chin, speaking with a meaningful tone, “I’m afraid if I leave it to them, our War Wolf Rescue Team might as well change its name to the lecherous wolf team.”

Chen Yingjie stumbled, not sure whether to cry or laugh.

“Captain, I heard you hit Meng Ping?” Chen Yingjie looked at him with stars in his eyes.

“He deserved it!” Xu Qigang’s expression grew fiercer and, without much explanation, sent him away.

Meng Ping was the younger brother of his old teammate, who had died a heroic death, worried on his deathbed that his brother would stray from the right path. Turns out, he was indeed a hooligan, not even comparable to his brother’s little finger.

Today at the Provincial Rescue Center, he happened to see Meng Ping harassing a female comrade, so Xu Qigang beat him up then and there. With the enthusiastic support of the leaders, they brought him back tied up.

In the dormitory, everyone else had gone out, leaving only Sheng Ning huddled miserably in her blanket. The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains was large, and it felt chilly as soon as the sun set.

Sheng Ning got up to pour herself a cup of hot water to hold in her hands, thinking about how to ask for a leave appropriately. With her current state, she definitely couldn’t participate in tomorrow’s training.

Just then, Wu Youli came in carrying something.

Sheng Ning’s eyes brightened, “Youli, what are you carrying?”

“Welfare goods. No wonder other teams are envious of our War Wolf Rescue Team; our benefits are even better than those of the General Union Dance Troupe!” Wu Youli meticulously placed the shoes, coat, towel, and soap down before turning to speak, “Sorry, I wanted to pick up your items too, but logistics wouldn’t allow it.”

“No worries, I’ll go by myself tomorrow.” Sheng Ning looked at the pile of items and felt happy. Once she collected hers, she’d send a set to An’an.

In the rural areas of the 1980s, having a coat was a particularly prestigious affair.
