Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 609: Chapter 609: A Time of Universal Unease

Just as I was getting ready to tidy up and go to the cafeteria for a meal, I heard someone knocking on the door outside.

When Yunyi opened the door, she saw Ye Wenhui standing outside: ”Done with work?”

Ye Wenhui looked Yunyi up and down, not seeing any signs of illness: ”What’s wrong with you?”

Yunyi looked puzzled: ”Nothing much, why do you ask?”

Ye Wenhui, somewhat confused, said: ”Weren’t you on the night shift last night? Why didn’t you go to work today?”

Yunyi turned and walked back inside, saying: ”Did you go to the infirmary looking for me?”

Ye Wenhui followed her inside: ”Yes, everyone’s talking about catching spies today. I finished work and wanted to bring my lunchbox over to find you. But they said you took a leave today, and I thought you were sick.”

Yunyi didn’t mention last night, only saying: ”I went up the mountain yesterday to dig herbs, got tired, so I took a leave.”

Ye Wenhui was relieved to see she was okay: ”By the way, are you cooking for yourself today, or going to the cafeteria?”

Yunyi tied up her hair: ”The cafeteria is serving buns today.”

Ye Wenhui laughed: ”Oh dear, my memory! Let’s go, let’s take the lunchboxes and head over there early to line up.”

After saying this, she remembered the main reason she came to find Yunyi: ”By the way, do you know about the spy-catching incident last night?”

At first, Yunyi didn’t react, wondering how the news got out. But thinking of the big commotion last night, with the Agricultural Reclamation Group and the forestry guard involved, it was no surprise that everyone knew.

Ye Wenhui whispered: ”Do you know, that Zhong Liyuan turned out to be a spy too? I even had meals with her before; who would have thought?”

As they talked, the two of them had already left the courtyard. Yunyi locked the door, and they headed towards the cafeteria.

Ye Wenhui went on: ”I heard there’s a tunnel under Zhong Liyuan’s courtyard. Besides her, another educated youth with the surname Guo from Songling Village was also arrested.”

Along the way, Ye Wenhui spoke passionately: ”I heard quite a few people from nearby brigades got implicated.”

Yunyi turned to look at her: ”When did this news start spreading?”

Ye Wenhui whispered: ”Someone found out after work, and by the afternoon, everyone was discussing it.”

In the following days, the matter continued to be a hot topic. Whether it was the forestry group or the Agricultural Reclamation Group, and even the nearby brigades, people were being taken away one after another, and everyone was on edge.

Afraid of being implicated.

The next day, Chief Qiao convened an all-hands Agricultural Reclamation Group meeting—a stern warning was naturally given—and only then did people stop discussing it openly, though it couldn’t be completely stopped in private.

It wasn’t until a week later that Yunyi saw Huo Jingrui again.

Huo Jingrui spoke before Yunyi could ask: ”Those people have all been brought to justice, so my mission is considered successfully completed.”

Yunyi couldn’t help but frown: ”When are you returning to the army?”

Huo Jingrui naturally knew what Yunyi was thinking: ”I’m not going back for now.”

Yunyi was a bit surprised: ”What’s going on?”

Huo Jingrui poured himself a glass of water and sat opposite Yunyi: ”Firstly, there are some follow-up tasks where my cooperation is needed. Secondly, since I’ve come to the mechanical plant, I should contribute something before leaving.”

Yunyi then remembered what he had mentioned before: ”What you mentioned before, has it been submitted?”

Huo Jingrui nodded: ”Yes, one model is already in production, so my return to the team will be delayed. Also, I’ve spoken with the factory hospital, and if you pass the assessment, you can get a transfer. What do you think?”

After saying this, Huo Jingrui stared at Yunyi without blinking, afraid she might say ’no.’
