Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 513: Chapter 513 You Little Ungrateful Wretch

Yunyi naturally wouldn’t keep secrets from Jingrui. ”When I was in Songling Village, I happened to meet Yuan Yuxun and his grandson. They were responsible for cleaning the sheep pens in Nanbai Village. Yuan Yuxun, from the Yuan Family—a Medical Aristocratic Family—studied Western medicine. At the time, I thought it would be a good cover for my medical knowledge, so I became his disciple.”

Huo Jingrui naturally knew of the Medical Aristocratic Family Yuan. ”Do you want to go to the Yuan Family’s place?”

Yunyi nodded. ”Didn’t I tell you before? It won’t be long after the New Year before they return to the Capital too. I want to go there in advance to check on the house.”

In fact, her main purpose for this trip was to see if the secret chamber her master had mentioned had been opened. However, that was her master’s family secret, and she couldn’t disclose it, not even to Jingrui.

Huo Jingrui started the car. ”I’ll go with you.”

Yunyi didn’t refuse. ”Okay, but when we get there, we can’t park the car near that area, to avoid any trouble.”

Huo Jingrui understood, of course.

Only then did Yunyi steer the conversation back. ”Why did you come over so late?”

Huo Jingrui gave her a reproachful look. ”Naturally, it’s because I missed you and wanted to come see you. But when I saw the lights in your room were off, I thought you were asleep and didn’t go in.”

Yunyi knew him all too well. ”And what else?”

Huo Jingrui, seeing he couldn’t avoid it, confessed, ”After my mother found out about us, she got so excited she let the news slip. The news just spread incredibly fast. Even my second sister-in-law heard about it at her workplace. Today, my eldest sister and second sister-in-law both came home to discuss it.”

Yunyi was puzzled. ”Then what are you worried about?”

She then added, ”Could it be that you don’t want people to know about me?”

Huo Jingrui stopped the car abruptly and pulled her into his arms, reaching up to pinch her cheek. ”You little ingrate!”

Yunyi nestled in his embrace. ”I’m just asking because I don’t understand. What does that have to do with being an ingrate?” As she spoke, her fingers playfully danced on his face.

Huo Jingrui grasped her mischievous hand and gently nipped her cheek. ”Isn’t it because the family is urging us to marry? I told them we have to wait at least until next year, after you’ve turned eighteen. But my mother and eldest sister... you know what they’re like. They’ll resort to anything. They even talked about changing your birthday! They pestered me so much I had no choice but to slip away.”

Yunyi couldn’t help but laugh when she heard him. However, thinking about her visit to the Huo Family the next day, she felt a little unsure. ”You don’t think they’ll bring this up with me tomorrow, do you?”

Now Huo Jingrui laughed too. ”You know, with my mother and eldest sister’s personalities, it’s entirely possible.”

With that said, his eyes twinkled as he ventured, ”Yi’er, actually, it’s not a bad suggestion. Why don’t you consider it?”

Yunyi pulled her hand back from his grip. ”I think you’re the one who’s tempted by their suggestion. That’s why you rushed over here in the middle of the night, isn’t it?”

Huo Jingrui rested his forehead against hers. ”You saw right through me, huh?”

She wasn’t opposed to marrying earlier. After all, she had experienced the ancient world where women could marry after their coming-of-age ceremony at fifteen. An eighteen-year-old unmarried woman was considered an old maid back then.

Besides, with her and Jingrui, it was only a matter of time before they ended up together. However, Yuan Yuxun and his grandson were still in Nanbai Village. If she left the Agricultural Reclamation Group, it would be inconvenient to look after them. Moreover, her master was truly a learned man, and she had indeed learned a great deal from him.

Thinking this over, she looked at Huo Jingrui. ”Let’s discuss this after the New Year. Once I hear news of my master and his grandson returning to the city, I’ll come to the county to find you.”

Huo Jingrui hadn’t expected this pleasant surprise. ”Are you serious?” he asked excitedly.

Seeing his expression, she suddenly realized something. ”You’re not thinking of...”

Huo Jingrui laughed. ”Exactly what you’re thinking. Since you said they’ll probably return to the Capital after the New Year, what’s wrong with me pulling a few strings to help things along?”

Huo Jingrui kissed Yunyi firmly on the cheek. ”Shall I get someone on this tomorrow?”

He finally understood. He recalled mentioning to Yunyi about transferring her from the Agricultural Reclamation Group to a factory-run hospital, an offer she had flatly refused. So that was the reason.

Today, when his mother and eldest sister were ganging up to push the matter, he had feigned resistance but was inwardly tempted. Still, Yunyi’s agreement was paramount. So, seeing his mother and eldest sister were determined to keep pestering him, he had decisively fled.

Of course, he hadn’t come over entirely for that reason. He mainly missed her and wanted to see her.

He had come all this way, full of excitement, only to find the lights in the young girl’s room were off.

Even if he couldn’t see her, just being near her felt good. He never imagined his wish would actually come true and he’d really get to see her.
