Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 494: Chapter 494 We Can’t Be Greedy

When Xia Dongxue heard the question, she desperately wanted to shout, I am Yunyi’s mother!

But she couldn’t. Yunyi had previously said she would acknowledge them but wouldn’t return to live with the Ye Family. What was Yunyi thinking? Would she be willing for them to reveal their identities at the Chu Family’s home? So, as the words reached her lips, she changed her statement. ”We are Yunyi’s relatives. We heard she had returned to Beijing and thought we’d come to see her.”

Cheng Lanlan hadn’t been very familiar with Yunyi before, but she did know a thing or two about the Chu Family. However, she’d never heard of Yunyi having other relatives. ”She just stepped out, and I can’t say when she’ll be back. What do you propose?”

A flicker of sadness crossed Xia Dongxue’s face as she looked at Ye Bingyu. ”Bingyu, what should we do?”

Ye Bingyu gently patted his wife’s shoulder, then turned to Cheng Lanlan. ”May we come in and wait for her?”

Cheng Lanlan naturally wouldn’t stop them. After all, the house belonged to Yunyi, and they were just renting a room there. It certainly wouldn’t be right to keep Yunyi’s relatives waiting outside. ”Please come in. You can wait in the living room. It’s quite cold today; it looks like it might snow.”

This was Xia Dongxue’s first visit to the Chu Family’s home. Upon entering, she constantly looked around the courtyard. This is where my daughter lives.

Seeing the jujube tree and stone table in the yard, her mind couldn’t help but conjure images of her daughter’s life there, and her eyes immediately reddened.
While Ye Bingyu observed the courtyard, he also kept a close watch on his wife’s expression. Seeing her state, he grew concerned and quietly took her hand, whispering, ”Don’t be like this.”

Xia Dongxue raised her hand to wipe the tears from the corners of her eyes, giving a soft ”mhm” in acknowledgment.

Cheng Lanlan led the couple to the living room and poured them water. ”I have porridge simmering on the stove, so I need to get back to it. Please make yourselves comfortable here for a while.”

Xia Dongxue quickly said, ”We’re sorry to have interrupted your work. Please, go on with what you were doing.”

After Cheng Lanlan left, Xia Dongxue began to survey the living room. Eventually, she stood up and walked to the window. ”Bingyu, I wonder when Yunyi will be back.”

Ye Bingyu also longed to see his daughter but found it difficult to respond. ”Don’t worry. We took the day off today, so no matter when she returns, we’ll be able to see her.”

Xia Dongxue rubbed her stinging nose. ”We don’t even know how long we can stay in Beijing this time. Why doesn’t she come to see us? Is she still holding a grudge against us in her heart?”

Ye Bingyu, worried his wife might dwell on it, reassured her, ”Dongxue, don’t overthink things. Our daughter already said she would acknowledge us but not live with us. We agreed to that, didn’t we? We can’t be greedy.”

He, too, wanted their daughter to return and live with them, but he wanted to respect her decision. Deep down, he understood perfectly well that their daughter harbored resentment because they had raised Wen Yue as their own, doting on her for eighteen years. It was only normal for their daughter to feel uncomfortable about it.

He sincerely wanted to make it up to his daughter, but she was strong-willed and wouldn’t give him the chance. He felt quite bitter about it, yet who could he blame?

If only he hadn’t been away on a mission back then... No, even if he had been waiting outside the delivery room, given the circumstances at the time, it wouldn’t have changed anything.

Thinking of this, his hatred for Qin Lijuan deepened, and he despised himself as well. ”Dongxue, those parcels you sent a while ago—I wonder if our daughter has received them yet?”

Upon hearing her husband’s question, Xia Dongxue refocused from her wandering thoughts. Considering the timing, she probably hasn’t retrieved them yet. She likely just missed being able to get them.
