Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 468: Chapter 468 onwards, I will follow local customs

A blush flashed across Yunyi’s face as she glared at Huo Jingrui. ”The marriage isn’t set in stone yet. Mind what you say. Besides, didn’t you already send a package before? Why are you sending more things now?”

Having said that, she then remembered she had been thinking about sending a set of clothes to her future mother-in-law but had completely forgotten about it in the hustle and bustle. It seemed she needed to put this on her agenda. The New Year was approaching quickly, and since mailing takes time, she couldn’t be like a Pixiu, only taking in without giving out.

As the two of them walked towards the small courtyard, Nurse Kong Jiaqiao, who was seeing someone off, happened to see them. Her face instantly filled with envy.

Turning back, she said to Chen Xiaojuan, who was about to leave, ”Pretty people just have all the luck.”

Chen Xiaojuan asked with a smile, ”What’s got you feeling so sentimental now?”

Kong Jiaqiao pouted. ”I’m just envious of Doctor Chu. It’s true what they say, comparisons are odious. I’ve been on five blind dates already, and they were all either crooked melons or cracked dates. But look at Doctor Chu—how spirited and handsome her beau is.”

Chen Xiaojuan chuckled at this comment. ”When it comes to marriage and daily life, what matters most is finding someone who treats you well. You mustn’t end up with someone who is all show but no substance, good-looking but useless—you’d only suffer later.”

Then, as if something came to mind, she quickly added, ”I’m not talking about Doctor Chu’s partner, mind you. I saw you with Zhang Tianhe a few days ago. Aside from having a handsome face, he’s no good in any other aspect. Don’t let his smooth-talking ways deceive you.”

Possibly worried that Kong Jiaqiao wouldn’t take her words well, she continued, ”We’re colleagues, after all, so I feel I should remind you: don’t always dream about romantic notions. What matters in life is finding someone down-to-earth and reliable.”

Kong Jiaqiao hadn’t expected Chen Xiaojuan to say so much. Although being spoken to like that made her somewhat unhappy, she also knew the advice was for her own good. ”I understand,” she said. ”It’s getting late; you should hurry back.”

「In the back courtyard.」

The moment Huo Jingrui entered the house, he dropped the package in his hand and pulled Yunyi into his embrace. ”Yi’er, have you missed me these past few days?”

Yunyi leaned into Huo Jingrui’s arms. ”Guess.”

Huo Jingrui stroked Yunyi’s long hair. ”I’m certain you have.”

Yunyi looked up at Huo Jingrui. ”Now that we’re in this world, you should try to get used to the way people speak here.”

Huo Jingrui pressed her back into his arms. ”I only talk this way with my Yi’er. But you’re right; I will adapt to the local customs in the future.”

As they cuddled, Yunyi explained to Huo Jingrui the connection between the current era and the time she lived in before transmigrating. Only then did Huo Jingrui learn from Yunyi that the college entrance examination would be resumed next year. It wouldn’t be long before the era of Reform and Opening Up would arrive, and the country would grow stronger and stronger.

Their affectionate interlude lasted a bit too long, and they ended up missing dinnertime.

Luckily, Huo Jingrui had brought dishes and buns from the state-owned restaurant. Yunyi felt too lazy to cook further and planned to just make a couple of cups of milk to have as their soup for the evening.

While heating the dishes, Huo Jingrui opened the package. In addition to a pile of food, there was, to their surprise, a pair of brown sheepskin short boots, which Yunyi instantly adored.

Seeing Yunyi liked them, Huo Jingrui felt immensely grateful to his mother. ”In a few days, I’ll take you to the city to look around and pick out some clothes you like.”

As they were talking, someone knocked on the main gate. ”Doctor Chu.”

Yunyi got up and went into the courtyard. ”Who is it?”

The person outside responded, ”Doctor Chu, it’s Xiaoliu from the regiment headquarters. You have a phone call.”

On hearing this, Yunyi frowned. Who could be calling me this late?
