Rebirth: The Courtyard Bride Is Cool and Radiant

Chapter 469: Chapter 469: The Missing Brother of Old Master Chu Comes Knocking

Yunyi informed Huo Jingrui and then hurried after Xiaoliu towards the group headquarters.

As she entered, she saw Deputy Chief Geng of the security team just leaving his office. ”Doctor Chu, what brings you here?” he asked.

Yunyi nodded to him. ”I came to answer a phone call.”

Deputy Chief Geng smiled upon hearing this, recalling the events of a few days prior. If Yunyi hadn’t intervened, those pregnant women would have been in grave danger. After all, the same situation had occurred in the county, where several pregnant women had lost their lives.

Even for those who survived, the doctors at the county hospital said that not only would the mothers likely suffer from persistent physical weakness, but the health of their unborn children also couldn’t be guaranteed.

When this news reached the Agricultural Reclamation Group, one of the pregnant women who had experienced that night became concerned about her child’s health. Consequently, her husband accompanied her to the county hospital for a check-up yesterday.

The doctor found no issues after the examination. Deputy Chief Geng had happened to encounter the couple while delivering documents in the county, and the memory stirred a sense of deep appreciation in him. Seeing Yunyi again today, his admiration for her only grew.

Before Deputy Chief Geng could say anything more, the phone in the office began to ring.

Xiaoliu answered the call. Upon learning it was for Yunyi, she quickly handed her the receiver. ”Doctor Chu, it’s for you.”

Yunyi took the phone. ”Hello, this is Yunyi.”

Auntie Wei’s voice came from the other end. ”Yunyi, it’s me, your Auntie Wei.”

She’s calling so late, something must be up. ”Auntie Wei, what happened?”

Auntie Wei got straight to the point. ”Yunyi, someone came looking for you today, claiming to be your grandfather’s younger brother. He said he had finally tracked down your grandfather’s whereabouts and even produced a photograph taken with your grandfather in their youth.”

Hearing Auntie Wei’s words, Yunyi wasn’t surprised. After all, the original owner of this body had indeed heard her grandfather mention many times that he had a younger brother named Chu Yucheng, who had been lost during the war.

When Auntie Wei heard no immediate response from Yunyi, she asked, ”Yunyi, are you listening to me?”

Yunyi replied, ”Auntie Wei, was it just him, or...?”

This clearly irritated Auntie Wei, who continued, ”He brought his entire family, and one of his daughters-in-law and his granddaughter are particularly unreasonable! What do you think we should do about this?”

Yunyi paused for a moment before asking, ”Auntie Wei, what are their intentions now?”

Auntie Wei cleared her throat. ”They want to stay here temporarily. That mother-daughter pair even tried to force open the door you had locked. Naturally, I couldn’t allow that. After I sent them away, I rushed to call you.”

I’m a sent-down youth, and I’ve already taken such a long leave before. I’m really not sure if I can get leave again. ”Auntie Wei, I’ll try to see if I can get leave shortly. If I can, I’ll make a trip back. If not, please give them my contact information and let them figure out how to reach me. But there’s one condition: don’t let them move in. The old saying is true: ’It’s easier to invite gods in than to send them away.’ If they turn out to be impostors, it will be a huge hassle.”

Auntie Wei quickly assured her, ”Don’t worry, I definitely won’t let them move in.”

Phone calls were expensive, and since Auntie Wei was the one who had called, they spoke only briefly before hanging up.

Grandfather’s long-lost younger brother had actually shown up. I don’t even need to guess; they must have thoroughly investigated the Chu Family’s situation before coming.

Just then, Qiao Shaoguo happened to be coming downstairs. ”Yunyi, what are you doing here?”

Hearing Qiao Shaoguo’s voice, Yunyi looked up. ”Qiao Tuan, I came to answer a phone call.”

Qiao Shaoguo recalled what he’d heard from Deputy Chief Geng. ”Yunyi,” he said, ”we owe you a great deal for your decisive actions the other day. Without you, our Agricultural Reclamation Group and the timber farm would have been thrown into chaos.”

Yunyi knew he was referring to her helping the pregnant women detoxify. ”It was my duty,” she replied.

Qiao Shaoguo said, ”That may be so, but if it weren’t for you, lives could have been lost. Rest assured, the rewards and commendations from the Group headquarters will be issued in the next few days.”

Thinking about her need for leave, Yunyi said somewhat sheepishly, ”Qiao Tuan, something unexpected has come up at home. Would it be possible to grant me a few days off?”
