29 Hiring a Human Shield
”Of course!” Chen Fan raised his gun, then shouted, ”Quick, look! It’s shaking again!”

Burp…

”You… all of you… drink!” Wei Songyue was nearly in tears. There were still 50 cans of beer left to drink.

Gulp… gulp....

These five fellows, who were probably mere underlings, dared not go against Wei Songyue’s words, so they forced themselves to chug down the beer.

”Boss, in my opinion, they can still drink more!” Yu Lin was obviously delighting in their misery. They had scared him half to death, rushing in just now. He had thought that they were his enemies from his school days!

”Pfff…” Hearing those words, they immediately spat out beer onto their companions’ faces!

After over an hour of pure torture, the six of them finally managed to finish all of the beer, their tummies swollen as if they were seven months pregnant.

”Wei Songyue, I know you will hold a grudge, and that you will definitely find a way to take your revenge!”

Chen Fan got up from the couch, then started to give his routine speech. ”But, next time, you better be prepared to leave this world!”

”B… boss, let’s just go!” Zhang Lele’s small face was completely pale, as he had never seen such a scene before.

”Let’s go!” Chen Fan did not want to stay longer than necessary either, in case some unexpected situation arose.

”Ah, so you won’t ask me to treat you to this round of drinks, right?” Chen Fan walked to the door, then turned around and asked Wei Songyue.

”No… no…” Wei Songyue was so bloated, he didn’t even have energy to even speak a full sentence in reply. Even just saying those few words had made beer foam dribble out of his mouth!

The soundproofing of the private room was excellent, so nobody even glanced at Chen Fan and his followers when they were walking out.

”Boss, where did you get that gun? Did you secretly conceal it this afternoon?” Exiting the main entrance of the entertainment outlet, Zhang Lele asked, still feeling jumpy.

”Obviously.” Yiteng Yun made a face, showing just how stupid he found him to be. ”If boss had a gun on him already, that fellow would not have dared to bring those blades.”

”Right, but didn’t that fellow just say that he took his revenge?” Yu Lin rubbed his hands together, then asked, ”Boss, when we reach the office, could you lend this to me for a while?”

”Of course!” Chen Fan agreed, nodded, then added, ”But, my gun has dubious origins. I hope everybody will help me keep this a secret!”

”Don’t worry boss. If you get jailed, we’d be out of a job.” Yu Lin patted his chest. ”Many people own guns, so as long as you don’t attract attention, it’s fine.”

Yiteng Yun curled his lips, then said, ”To secretly conceal a gun carries a punishment of an imprisonment of less than three years or house arrest. And, your gun is not even an army-issue gun, so if you were exposed, it’s nothing a little money couldn’t fix. If we report you, at most, we could get 500 yuan worth of easy money, which is the price given by the Ministry of Public Security. Do you think that we have so much free time on our hands?”

”Yes, boss, don’t you worry!” Zhang Lele bobbed his head, like a chick pecking at grains, ”But… Won’t Wei Songyue call the cops?”

”He won’t, unless he doesn’t plan to work in Zhong Yun ever again!” Yiteng Yun hesitated slightly, then said, ”Thugs are egotistical people, especially those like him, who have made a decent living. If he reports us to the police, he would be shunned by all of the other thugs, and he would never be able to hold his head up again!”

”But… boss, you might encounter some difficulties soon!” Yiteng Yun added.

”Then… then would he… also take his revenge against us…” Zhang Lele trembled with fear, thinking of those five or six knife-bearing buff men.

”Hard to say!” Yu Lin clicked his tongue. ”If they manage to find our office, we might as well eliminate them all in one stroke, since we would all be present.”

”Ah... ” The blood again drained from Zhang Lele’s face.

”Don’t worry. That’s too big a coincidence. It’s not like they are the police, so how could they find one man in such a big city as Zhong Yun?”

Yiteng Yun furrowed his eyebrows, then said, ”Boss, you’d better not stay at home for the time being!”

”I know. I’ll stay at the office for now,” Chen Fan said, while he rubbed his forehead. ”Alright, that’s enough. Let’s go back to the office.”

When they reached the office, Yu Lin managed to wheedle the gun away, and commenced to fiddle with it the whole rest of the afternoon. Even Yiteng Yun and Zhang Lele eventually joined in on the fun. A gun is as attractive as a beautiful lady to a man, so it was only after spending a few working hours with the lovely piece of weaponry that Yu Lin reluctantly returned it to Chen Fan.

When the three of them had left, Chen Fan went out to buy some bedding and toiletries. This sixteen-floor office building had over thirty security officers, each of whom carried a stun baton and a walkie-talkie, so Chen Fan was not at all worried that people would be able to barge into the office to take their revenge on him.

Upon finishing a fast food dinner, Chen Fan laid on the sofa and sank into deep thought When they were at the entertainment outlet, Chen Fan had really wanted to kill Wei Songyue. His perfectly fine old house was smashed on his orders, and just buying new stuff would cost him over 7500 yuan.

But, Chen Fan was also worried that, if he did shoot him, and the people outside heard the gunshot and called the cops, his only option would be to hide away in a deserted island forever, having to rely solely on the electric eel for survival.

He couldn’t kill him, but he couldn’t not kill him either. Hence, Chen Fan was in a real dilemma. Moreover, he couldn’t always remain in hiding, but he also couldn’t not hide, even if he carried a gun with him, which he wouldn’t dare take to, at least when he was in public.

He could also predict that the next time trouble came knocking, it would not come brandishing just a knife...

Maybe I should employ several highly-skilled bodyguards?

Chen Fan did a quick calculation, figuring that he spent over one hundred and twenty thousand to open a company, buy furniture, and rent a house. So, counting the fifty thousand he had earned this afternoon, he still had one hundred and thirty thousand left to go.

One hundred and thirty thousand! He had to pay Yu Lin, Lele, and Yun around 6,000 in wages every month, so if they don’t make a single cent in these ten months, then that meant that only seventy thousand would be left!

Seventy thousand…

If he hired one bodyguard and paid him ten thousand yuan a month, he could afford to hire six more, for a total of seven bodyguards. If he offered ten thousand yuan a month, even a policeman would probably resign from their force to become his bodyguard.

Okay! Tomorrow he would hire a few human shields for his safety, which would also be good for his reputation! Anyway, money came easily for him. So, if he ran out of it, he could just catch a few sharks, whales, or other valuable playthings to sell, any of which could easily be sold for ten thousand yuan.

It was silent the whole night. The next day, Chen Fan again visited the job market, using five hundred yuan to rent a spot there. He then posted a wanted sign, which read:

Hiring bodyguards (five), willing to offer high pay.

Must have served in the army for at least two years, be between the ages of 22 to 28, and have a height above 1.75 meters.

Must have a local bank account and be able to provide relevant identification documents, as well as proof of service.

Priority will be given to those with superior physiques and those who have expert martial arts training.

The pay starts at 5,000 yuan per month, but additional wages can be negotiated for those with superior skills.

The job description, which had been typed by Chen Fan, promptly attracted countless fellows, who had just finished their two years of military service, as being a bodyguard with a monthly salary of five thousand yuan was even better than being a white-collar worker.

”Hey bro, I just retired from the field army. Look at my physique. I could knock down three to five people, no problem!”

”Sir, I’m from Shenyang troop regiment 107, which is the army’s trump card!”

”Boss, I just retired from the South Sea Fleet, and when I was accepted, I was nearly chosen for the Marine Corps.”

The applicants were each better than the last, and those fellas, who were merely in the ordinary forces, dared not linger, but left straightaway. Chen Fan never expected to get so many applicants!

Just then, a gap opened in the crowd, as someone was elbowing their way through. Immediately, a tall and thin youth appeared.

”Move aside people. How dare you apply, when you’ve only been a child soldier for two years!” The youth had an arrogant look on his face. ”Bro, hire me! It’s a done deal, if you pay me twenty thousand a month!”
