Thunderstorm Asthma? I’ll Just Drain the National Power Grid!

17: Want to be a lone wolf? The organization will send you a stunning beauty! The next day, at the training base, in the tiered lecture hall.

All the new recruits who passed the assessment had changed into brand new black training uniforms and gathered together.

Their faces showed excitement and pride.

After all, from today onwards, they would be official members of the Dragon Shield Bureau, secret guardians protecting the stability and prosperity of the country.

On the stage, Su Wanqing wore a uniform, with silver badges representing a C-rank Special Agent on her shoulders.

She scanned the room, taking in the expressions of all the new recruits below the stage.

”First, congratulations to everyone for passing the assessment.”

Her opening remarks were concise, without a hint of politeness.

”From today onwards, I will be your direct liaison officer, responsible for your initial mission assignments and operational coordination.”

”Now, I will explain the basic organizational structure and member responsibilities of the Dragon Shield Bureau.”

Behind Su Wanqing, a holographic screen lit up, displaying a complex organizational chart.

”The Dragon Shield Bureau consists of: the Operations Department, the Intelligence Department, the Research Department, the Logistics Department, and the Containment Department. All of you belong to the Operations Department, which is the field operations department.”

”The field operations department has the highest casualty rate in the Dragon Shield Bureau, without exception.”

This sentence quieted the somewhat noisy atmosphere below the stage.

”You will face the most bizarre supernatural events and confront the most ferocious demons and invaders from other worlds.”

”Your enemies will not play by the rules with you, nor will they give you a second chance.”

Su Wanqing opened a document, and a striking line of red numbers appeared on the screen.

”Last year, across the entire Huaxia region of the Dragon Shield Bureau, three thousand four hundred and twenty field agents were killed in action, and one thousand nine hundred and eighty were severely injured and disabled. Among them, new recruits who had been employed for less than a year accounted for sixty percent.”

The cold numbers were like a bucket of ice water poured over the heads of all the new recruits.

The excitement and pride on their faces faded, replaced by solemnity and unease.

The so-called ”chosen ones” seemed so pale and powerless in the face of the cruel mortality rate.

The entire lecture hall was silent.

Except for one person.

Lin Yuan sat in the corner of the last row, head bowed, tapping his fingers on his knees, muttering to himself.

He was calculating.

Hmm, three thousand four hundred and twenty killed in action, according to Dragon Shield Bureau internal regulations.

Dying in the line of duty is at least a special merit, posthumous recognition as a martyr, with a starting seven-figure pension, right?

Family members also receive additional subsidies and housing benefits... One hundred and ninety-eight severely injured and disabled, this depends on the disability level.

If he loses an arm or a leg, and is rated as a Level 3 disability, the one-time subsidy plus subsequent recuperation funds should also amount to a small fortune.

If he’s lucky, gets contaminated by some evil god’s energy, leading to paralysis but with a clear mind... Isn’t that like lying flat with pay, lifelong recuperation, and a life of comfort?

Hiss... The benefits are much better than those 996 blessed companies.

Listening to Su Wanqing’s introduction, Lin Yuan not only didn’t feel fear but listened with great interest, even a little anticipation.

This was not a dangerous supernatural world at all.

This was clearly a golden path to financial freedom!

Su Wanqing noticed the change in atmosphere below the stage, and she was very satisfied with it.

Cooling down these arrogant new recruits was something she had to do every time she brought in a new batch.

Only by making them truly aware of the danger could they live longer in future missions.

”To maximize mission success and member survival rates, the Operations Department implements a basic operational unit—the ’Partner System’.”

She switched the screen, and two human silhouettes fighting side-by-side appeared.

”All field agents must find a partner. Two people form a team, jointly execute missions, supporting each other as flanks and backups.”

”Your partner will be the only person you can entrust your back to on the battlefield.”

”Now, you have ten minutes to freely form teams.”

As soon as she finished speaking.

The previously silent lecture hall erupted into a clamor.

”Brother, let’s team up! You’re a speed type, I’m a defense type, a perfect match!”

”Uh... I’m a support healer, does anyone want me?”

The two ancient martial artists who ranked first and second in the physical test merely exchanged glances and nodded in understanding, their strong alliance drawing envious looks.

The rest of the new recruits also quickly grouped up in twos and threes based on their abilities and previous acquaintances, quickly finding their partners.

The lecture hall was bustling.

Only the corner where Lin Yuan was located formed a vacuum.

Everyone subconsciously avoided him, not daring to even glance at him.

Are you kidding?

Teaming up with this guy?

That’s the ruthless person who instantly killed a ”quasi C-rank” monster with one punch.

His mysterious purple lightning, just looking at it, made people’s hearts tingle.

Teaming up with him was too much pressure.

What if during a mission, he was still fighting small fry, and his Palm Thunder instantly killed the BOSS? How would the credit be calculated? How would the performance be divided?

More importantly, communication would be impossible!

This guy exuded an aura of ”I’m a monster, do as you please” from head to toe.

Lin Yuan didn’t care about this at all, even feeling a little secretly pleased.

No one at all?

Excellent!

Perfect!

Isn’t this the ”lone wolf” script he’d always dreamed of?

Acting alone, how free!

He could go to the substation for a ”snack” whenever he wanted.

He could ”charge” his newly acquired thunderfall battle staff however he wanted.

No need to worry about a partner asking questions next to him.

”Report, my partner Lin Yuan is missing again!”

”Report, I found Lin Yuan smiling foolishly while hugging a ’High Voltage Danger’ sign!”

”Report, Lin Yuan said he was going to charge his phone, and then he rushed into the center of a thunderstorm!”

The thought of such socially awkward situations made his scalp tingle.

It was better to be alone.

Lin Yuan cleared his throat, ready to raise his hand and apply to become the Dragon Shield Bureau’s first ”solo operative” after everyone else had teamed up.

Just then.

Su Wanqing’s clear, cold voice rang out.

”Everyone has found their partner.”

Her gaze swept across the room, finally settling on the solitary Lin Yuan.

”One person is an exception.”

The entire room fell silent.

”Lin Yuan.”

Su Wanqing called out his name.

”Given your overall S-rank evaluation and special circumstances, with special approval from the Director, your partner will be directly assigned by the organization.”

The secret pleasure on Lin Yuan’s face froze.

Assigned?

No way!

My grand plan for a lazy life, just perfectly laid out!

The new recruits below, however, cast curious gazes.

Organizationally assigned? Who could it be?

Could it be a big shot sent from the General Bureau? Or an experienced veteran agent, specifically brought in to mentor this super rookie?

For a moment, everyone was curious as to who was so ”lucky,” or rather... unlucky, to be partnered with this monster, Lin Yuan.

Under everyone’s scrutinizing gaze.

Su Wanqing’s announcement rang out.

”From today onwards, I, Su Wanqing, will be your partner.”

All the new recruits, including the few seasoned assistant instructors standing by the wall, stared blankly at Lin Yuan.

Lin Yuan himself was stunned.

He slowly raised his hand, a finger trembling as he pointed at his nose.

”Are you sure it’s me?”

”No?”

”Is this right?”
