From American Internet Celebrity to God Among Men

196: Chapter 196 Moment of EnlightenmentTwo weeks after the formal completion of the ”Green Sound Barrier” and water feature at the Boyle Heights Community Park, the Echo platform released a lightweight report titled ”Urban Respiratory Pathology Case 001: Preliminary Effects of Soundscape Intervention at the Boyle Heights Intersection.”

The report eschewed dense academic language, instead presenting its findings through resident interviews, volunteer testimonials, acoustic data visualization charts comparing before and after (decibel value changes, high-frequency noise attenuation curves), and the most intuitive element of all—comparative audio recordings of the environment captured during the same time periods.

The data was positive: the average daily equivalent noise level dropped by approximately 4-6 decibels, and the harshness of peak noise (such as passing heavy trucks) was significantly reduced due to the tree cover and spatial separation.

But the qualitative feedback was even more moving.

In Ms. Maria’s video interview, she sat on the newly added bench with the now-rooted, sprouting privet shrubs and the babbling water feature behind her: ”I’m willing to come here and sit in the afternoons now. I can chat with neighbors, listen to the water, and look at the trees. The children have returned too, and I can finally hear their laughter clearly. Sleeping at night... it really seems a bit quieter, and my heart doesn’t feel as restless.”

A young office worker who commutes here frequently submitted a post: ”I used to feel irritable every time I waited for the red light, but now I subconsciously take a few more looks at that patch of fresh green and the small water feature, and that soft new signal tone is much more comfortable than the old beeping sound. Although the noise is still there, I feel like it’s being ’managed’ rather than me passively enduring it.”

At the end of the report, a download link for the open-source ”Community Soundscape Improvement Toolkit” version 1.0 was attached, along with the platform’s newly launched ”Soundscape Co-creator” badge system—users who continuously contribute high-quality sound stories, participate in offline improvement activities, or provide professional advice will receive virtual badges of different levels and a small amount of platform points (redeemable for digital merchandise or for donation to public welfare projects).

The response exceeded expectations.

The toolkit was downloaded by community organizations, university sociology or environmental studies courses in multiple cities.

Within the platform, the quality of submissions in the ”Urban Respiratory Pathology” section improved significantly, with many contributions now including preliminary community survey data and small-scale solution concepts.

The ”Soundscape Co-creator” badge sparked a sense of honor and participatory enthusiasm among core users.

Marcus excitedly summarized at the weekly meeting: ”We have accidentally triggered a positive cycle: providing methodology and showcasing cases → attracting high-quality user participation and practice → generating more excellent cases and improved methods → feeding back into the platform’s content ecosystem and brand depth → attracting more like-minded people to join. This is far more solid than simply buying traffic to create content.”

Alex looked at the steadily growing user retention metrics in the backend and that slow but continuous influx of popularity with high emotional added value, and nodded.

This growth model was closer to ”cultivating an ecosystem” rather than ”building a skyscraper.”

It was slower, but more resilient to risks and better reflected the essence of ”influence.”

”Keep this direction,” he said. ”For the next case, we can choose a different type of ’pathology,’ such as the ’loss of community memory sounds’—recording those vanishing old crafts, old markets, and dialect street hawking, and trying to cooperate with local cultural institutions for digital preservation or even living inheritance. Let the cultural dimensions of ’diagnosis’ and ’healing’ become more substantial as well.”

The workshop in Vienna entered its final, and most critical, synthesis stage.

Taylor and her team adopted Alex’s ”new instrument” thinking and spent three full days defining the core ”emotional intent keywords” and ”overall timbre texture goals” for every major passage, and even every musical phrase, of the adapted version of ”pressure gradient.”

This process was extremely grueling, yet also incredibly satisfying.

It required the creators to translate vague feelings into precise linguistic descriptions, and then think in reverse about how to achieve them using limited ”sound source components” (string quartet + electronic sound layers).

For example, the introduction, described as ”the beginning of a deep dive, the heaviness and desolation of the metal hatch closing”:

· Overall timbre goal: cold, enclosed, a sense of silence with slight metallic resonance.

· Implementation plan: For the string section, the cello and viola play long notes in the extremely low register, using ”non vibrato” (almost no vibrato), playing near the bridge to produce overtones, creating a sense of emptiness and coldness; the violins rest. For the electronic layer, add authentic deep-sea submarine hydraulic device sound samples that have been heavily stretched and filtered, at a very low volume, mixed into the tail resonance of the long string notes, almost inaudible, yet providing that ”non-biological mechanical” texture base.

Another example, the climax, described as ”the distortion of consciousness and perception and the fragmented struggle under peak pressure”:

· Overall timbre goal: chaotic, sharp, full of discordant friction and pulsed impacts, but with a glimmer of unyielding life rhythm at the base.

· Implementation plan: The entire string quartet participates, using many unconventional playing techniques—noise generated by pressing the strings hard (scratch tone), striking the body of the instrument with the bow stick (col legno), and rapid glissando on the fingerboard to create a sense of vertigo. The electronic layer is no longer background, but transforms into sharp, pulsed ”neural electrical signal” simulation sounds, intertwining and colliding with the physical friction sounds of the strings, sometimes synchronized and sometimes out of sync, jointly constructing an auditory ”storm of pain.” But in the intervals of the storm, the cello consistently maintains an extremely faint, yet rhythmic, heartbeat-like sustained low B, symbolizing the body’s final stand.

When all the passages were rearranged and pre-mixed according to this approach, Taylor, the sound designer, and the orchestra musicians conducted the first full listening session in a professional recording control room.

The music began.

It was no longer a ”two-layered skin” of strings and electronic sounds, but a complete, breathing, painful yet beautiful ”organism.”

The cold sense of technology and the warm tremor of humanity blended together as never before.

Every friction and every breath of the strings was amplified and endowed with new spatial meaning by the perfectly placed ”coloring” or ”echoing” of the electronic layer.

And those non-human electronic sounds, because of the bearing of the strings’ real flesh and blood, no longer felt alienated, but instead became the externalization of human inner experience in an extreme environment.

When the eight-minute-long piece ended, there was silence in the control room.

The lead violinist, that silver-haired old gentleman, was the first to take off his monitoring headphones.

He sat silently for over ten seconds, then slowly raised his hands and began to applaud.

Immediately after, the other musicians, recording engineers, the artistic director... everyone began to applaud; the applause was not enthusiastic, but filled with respect and shock.

The artistic director walked up to Taylor and said solemnly: ”Ms. Allison, this is no longer an ’adaptation.’ This is a brand-new chamber music work belonging to this era. It possesses the rigorous structure and profound humanity of classical music, as well as the sound vocabulary and spatial imagination of the electronic age. The Vienna Philharmonic is honored to be one of its first performers.”

Taylor’s nose stung, but she held it back.

She knew they had finally found that ”only bridge.”

All the struggles, experiments, and starting over from scratch were worth it at this moment.

She immediately sent a short message to Alex: ”Bridge, found. Sound synthesis, alive.”

---

Almost on the same day, Alex received a new briefing from Team K, marked as ”Historical Correlation Analysis · Preliminary Findings.”

The content of the briefing temporarily diverted his attention from the ”active beacon” SPO-α in the South Pacific to the more distant past.

Team K researchers cross-referenced historical documents, geological archaeological records from around the world, and the ”abnormal signal/energy residue” database they were gradually building, discovering some intriguing weak correlations.

The briefing pointed out:

1. Pattern implications: The ”energy imprints” or ”interaction traces” found in Greenland, ancient Mayan cities, Nordic Viking carvings, plateau monasteries, etc., their active periods (back-calculated based on residual intensity decay models) do not seem entirely random, but rather exhibit a certain loose, long-period (counting in hundreds or even thousands of years) ”clustered” distribution in time.

2. Historical records of ”Echo”: During certain historical periods corresponding to active phases, local mythology, epics, or occult literature occasionally contained records of ”celestial anomalies,” ”underground rumblings,” ”encounters with indescribable entities,” or ”obtaining mysterious knowledge/revelations.” These records were often vague and categorized as legends or religious experiences, but they overlapped geographically with the ”imprint” locations.

3. A bold working hypothesis: Team K proposed that ”automated beacons” like SPO-α might not be isolated cases. Historically, there may have existed a sparse, non-continuously activated ”beacon network” or ”monitoring nodes” that conducted periodic, low-intensity scanning or status recording of Earth (or the solar system) over an extremely long time scale. These ”historical beacons” might have long since ceased operation or been damaged due to energy depletion, geological changes, or other reasons, leaving behind only faint ”imprints.” SPO-α might be one of the few nodes in this ancient network that is still running or has been recently activated.

4. A new request for Alex: They hope that when Alex conducts ”Information Texture Discrimination” on historical sites (whether already explored or potentially discovered in the future), he can pay extra attention to a possibility—trying to perceive whether these ”imprints” contain residual, extremely faint texture differences that are different from SPO-α’s ”procedural coldness,” perhaps closer to ”information transmission” or even ”directional dissemination” intent. This might help distinguish between simple ”environmental monitoring points” and ”nodes” that may have served different functions.

This briefing did not bring an urgent threat, but it was like unfolding a more vast, incredibly time-spanning secret tapestry before Alex.

In Earth’s history, there may have always existed this silent ”gaze” or ”record” from the depths of the starry sky, its traces as faint as spider silk, yet intermittently running through the memory of human civilization.

This feeling was like an archaeologist who had been studying a single strange stele, suddenly realizing that this stele might belong to an ancient signpost system that had long since vanished and spanned the globe.

Alex stood in his study, looking out the window.

Under the night sky of Los Angeles were the brilliant lights of human civilization.

And beneath those lights, within the historical rock layers, at the bottom of deep-sea trenches, there might still be countless such ”steles” sleeping, quietly recording the passage of time, waiting to be caught by a capable ”translator” by chance.

SPO-α is one of the few still flickering among them.

And more are already asleep.

His [Information Texture Discrimination] ability might just be one of the keys to waking these sleeping ”whispers.”

This realization did not make him feel uneasy, but instead produced a strange sense of calm and mission.

The frontier of exploration suddenly expanded from a single point in the South Pacific to the depths of time.

But this exploration needed no impatience; it would be a deep, enduring, and intellectually pleasurable sub-melody accompanying his long life and career.

He replied to Team K: ”The hypothesis is highly enlightening. Agree with the new direction of perception. Will keep an eye out in subsequent related work. The current focus should still be on the continuous monitoring of SPO-α and the deepening of capability training.”

Closing the terminal, he heard the humming of Taylor practicing a new song downstairs—she had just returned from Vienna, bringing back inspiration after her breakthrough, and was brewing a brand-new creation.

The warm feedback from the community project was still flowing in the platform’s comment section.

There were still several drafts of new ”Echo” platform projects on hand that needed review.

The present was fulfilling and beautiful.

The puzzles in the distance were profound and alluring.

He had time, he had ability, he had everything worth protecting, and he also had the curiosity and capital to explore the unknown.

This feeling was good.
