From American Internet Celebrity to God Among Men

193: Chapter 193 The Distant BuzzThe live stream on the ”Echo” platform lacked the usual dazzling special effects or celebrity aura. The camera was pointed at Boyle Heights—a slightly crowded old neighborhood in East Los Angeles primarily inhabited by Latino and Asian immigrants.

In the center of the frame were Alex, a focused middle-aged Asian woman wearing glasses (Urban Sound Ecologist Dr. Irene Chen), and Ms. Maria, an active senior community organizer. They stood in a small park next to a crossroad, with vibrant murals and slightly noisy streets as their backdrop.

The stream’s title was simple: ”Stethoscoping Our Community · Lesson One: The ’Anxious Heartbeat’ of the Intersection.”

”Welcome to all our friends at ’Echo,’” Alex said to the camera, his tone calm and sincere. ”Today, we’re not here to perform, but to ’listen’ and ’learn.’ This is the first in-depth case study of our new project, ’urban respiratory pathology.’ This is Dr. Irene Chen; she studies how sound affects our health, emotions, and community cohesion. And this is Ms. Maria, who has lived on this street for forty years.”

He turned toward the intersection: ”Now, everyone, please put on your headphones, turn up the volume a bit, and join us in listening to the sounds of this intersection for one minute.”

The live audio switched to high-fidelity field recording. Instantly, the audience was pulled into that environment:

A continuous, slightly dull flow of traffic served as the base.

Every time the traffic light turned red, the sharp friction of vehicles braking rose and fell.

When the green light signaled, the low roar of engines accelerating mixed with the vibration of exhaust pipes.

The heavy release of air pressure—”psshhh”—as a bus pulled into the station.

The rapid, monotonous ”beep-beep-beep” of the pedestrian crossing signal.

Snippets of Spanish pop music playing from roadside shops mingled with the occasional metallic clanging from a nearby construction site.

Several children shouted and ran nearby, their voices drifting closer and then further away.

The wind blowing through the palm fronds on the roadside made a dry rustling sound.

One minute, unedited. Many viewers left comments in the chat: ”It’s a bit annoyingly noisy...”, ”This is how I feel every day on my way home from work; I didn’t realize it was so anxiety-inducing,” ”That braking sound makes my temples throb.”

”Thank you all for listening with us,” Alex’s voice cut back in. ”Dr. Chen, from a professional perspective, what are the primary ’symptoms’ of this soundscape?”

Dr. Irene Chen adjusted her glasses and pointed to a real-time spectrum analyzer screen: ”Look, everyone, the low-frequency energy (traffic) here is persistent and excessively high, while the mid-to-high frequencies (brakes, signals, metallic impacts) show sharp, sudden, and unpredictable characteristics. Long-term exposure to this acoustic combination significantly raises residents’ stress hormone levels, leading to chronic anxiety, decreased sleep quality, and even affecting cognitive function. More importantly, it suppresses the ’pro-social soundscape’ the community should have—like neighbors chatting, children playing, and the sounds of nature—weakening social bonds.”

Ms. Maria nodded immediately and said in accented English: ”Exactly! The park was supposed to be a place for us seniors to chat and children to play, but now no one wants to stay for long. You have to shout to be heard, and you can’t even hear the kids playing clearly. At night, even with the windows closed, that humming sound makes it feel like living right next to a highway. Many people complain of headaches and getting short-tempered.”

”So, after the ’diagnosis,’ is there a ’prescription’?” Alex asked Dr. Chen.

”Completely eliminating traffic noise isn’t realistic, but we can take a two-pronged approach: ’noise reduction’ and ’pleasure enhancement.’” Dr. Chen pulled up several design diagrams. ”Together with the community and student volunteers in urban planning, we’ve proposed several low-cost, actionable solutions. First, on the side of the park near the intersection, we’ll plant dense, tall shrubs (like privet) as a natural sound barrier to effectively absorb and scatter some low-frequency noise. Second, we’ll add a small landscape feature with a water element inside the park. The sound of flowing water is a natural ’acoustic spice’ that can effectively mask residual noise and provide relaxing white noise. Third, we’ll negotiate with the Department of Transportation to see if the pedestrian crossing signal can be changed to a softer, more musical tone. We could even invite local artists or schoolchildren to design the sound.”

The plans were presented visually, even including simple acoustic simulation comparisons. The comment section became active: ”Planting trees is a great idea! It beautifies the environment too,” ”The flowing water idea is fantastic; just thinking about it feels comfortable,” ”Change the signal! That beep-beep-beep is truly ear-piercing.”

”These plans require community consensus, some funding, and volunteer labor,” Alex said, looking at the camera. ”The ’Echo’ platform will establish a dedicated micro-fund in collaboration with the ’Sound of Echoes’ public welfare project to cover the costs of the first batch of pilot materials and some expert consultation fees. More importantly, we need friends who live in Boyle Heights or care about this community to provide ideas, supervise the process, and even sign up as volunteers. This isn’t just about lowering noise by a few decibels; it’s about fighting for a little more peace and joy in our shared living environment.”

He turned to Ms. Maria: ”Maria, what do you think?”

Ms. Maria’s eyes were slightly moist as she nodded vigorously at the camera: ”We need this! We need it very much! It makes us feel like someone cares about what we hear every day and how we feel. This isn’t charity; it’s everyone working together to make our home better.”

The live stream ended with a demonstration of how to sign up, donate, or provide suggestions through the platform page. There was no melodramatic music, only practical solutions and invitations.

The effect was immediate. Within an hour of the stream ending, the micro-fund received donations far exceeding expectations. The number of local users signing up as volunteers was considerable. More profoundly, this case became a template; submissions from other communities began to be more specific and constructive. People started thinking about ”what we can do” rather than just ”it’s noisy here.”

”A perfect practice in social design,” Marcus summarized during the review meeting. ”Impact, engagement, and brand reputation—a triple win. And the costs are controllable.”

Alex nodded. Within the ”humming” he sensed, there was now an added resonance of steady, warm social responsibility. This touched the core of ”authentic influence” within the ”popularity” system more than mere commercial success ever could.

---

A few days later, the underground studio at home was transformed into a temporary ”rehearsal site for the Vienna Workshop.”

Taylor’s keyboard and several portable acoustic instruments (violin, viola, cello) were laid out, connected to the equipment from the ”Flashpoint” lab capable of real-time spatial audio rendering and sound texture analysis. Alex played the dual roles of ”sound architect” and ”texture consultant.”

They were attempting to transform the electronic soundscape from ”pressure gradient”—which depicted ”diving into the deep sea, where surging pressure leads to sensory distortion”—into a string quartet texture.

”In the original track, we used extremely low-frequency synthetic pulses with heavy harmonic distortion to simulate the crushing sensation of water pressure,” Alex said, pointing to the spectrogram. ”It’s hard for strings to reproduce that ’physical pressure’ directly. But we can pivot to ’psychological pressure’—using highly dissonant chords (like densely stacked minor seconds and augmented fourths) combined with unconventional playing techniques, such as playing near the bridge (Ponticello) to create a harsh metallic sound, or heavy friction on the fingerboard (scratch tone) to manufacture anxiety and suffocation.”

Taylor experimented on the violin, her brow furrowed as she searched for that ”uncomfortable yet accurate” sound. ”The viola and cello will use long notes as a foundation to continuously create a ’dark background’ in the low register, while the violin and viola ’struggle’ with these dissonant patterns in the high register...” she murmured to herself as she played.

Alex listened with his eyes closed, Information Texture Discrimination operating quietly. He could hear not only pitch and timbre but also perceive the ”emotional granularity” carried by different playing techniques and chords.

”Stop, right there,” he suddenly spoke. ”On that long note the viola just played, as the tail end naturally decays, add an extremely slight, almost inaudible vibrato. Don’t make it regular; make it like a micro-tremor of a muscle losing control under pressure. This kind of ’imperfect physiological detail’ evokes empathy more than pure mechanical noise.”

Taylor and the two local string players invited to assist exchanged looks and gave it a try. When that subtle physiological tremor—hard to accurately record on sheet music—was added, the ”suffocation” of the entire phrase instantly shifted from an abstract acoustic concept into a perceptible bodily experience.

”Oh my god, that’s exactly it...” one of the cellists couldn’t help but whisper. ”I feel a chill down my spine.”

Taylor looked at Alex, her eyes filled with wonder and a deeper understanding. She knew he had extraordinary ”ears,” but every time he precisely pointed out those inexpressible yet vital ”textures,” she realized more clearly how this ability fundamentally shaped the depth of his creative understanding.

”You really are a terrifying ’Sound Doctor,’” she said half-jokingly, her tone full of reliance and admiration.

”Specializing in clearing up all kinds of ’emotional soundscape’ blockages,” Alex responded with a smile, feeling pleased. This process of seamlessly transforming hidden perceptual abilities into a boost for top-tier artistic creation was, in itself, a source of immense enjoyment and achievement.

Late at night, after Taylor and the musicians had left, Alex was cleaning up the equipment alone when his personal terminal received a top-priority encrypted briefing from Team K.

The title was brief: ”South Pacific Coordinates SPO-α: Significant Increase in Observation Window Activity and Capture of Abnormal Signals.”

The report’s content was more restrained than the title, but the amount of information was staggering:

1. Persistent Meteorological/Oceanic Anomalies: The low-pressure vortex around the coordinates has persisted for over two weeks and slightly expanded. The sea surface temperature shows a small but persistent negative anomaly (lower than surrounding areas), and ocean current patterns show signs of disruption.

2. Signal Capture: The passive monitoring array deployed in the international waters of that region, disguised as oceanographic research buoys, captured a directional acoustic/extremely low-frequency electromagnetic composite signal 48 hours ago. It is active, non-natural, and has a 34% structural similarity in encoding to the Greenland pulse sequence. The signal lasted 17 seconds; it was weak in intensity but had clear characteristics.

3. Preliminary Analysis: The signal is not environmental noise and has a clear information-carrier structure. Its ”texture” (citing Alex’s previous terminology), via remote analysis, tends toward a mix of ”status broadcast” and ”environmental interaction test.” This partially aligns with the ”operation status report” metaphor of an ”automated lighthouse,” but with a significant added component of ”active probing.”

4. Risk Assessment Update: Environmental risks (harsh sea conditions, climate anomalies) remain ”High.” However, given the appearance of an ”active signal,” the potential contact/interaction risk level has been upgraded from ”Observation” to ”Cautious Concern.” The signal has not shown aggression or high-intelligence interactive intent, but the ”activeness” itself implies an increase in variables.

5. Recommendations: Continue remote monitoring and upgrade array sensitivity. It is recommended that Alex (as a key ”texture discrimination” asset) begin targeted simulation training for ”active signal emotional/intentional tendency analysis” (signal samples and training protocols will be provided). Field proximity is not recommended and currently unnecessary in any form.

At the end of the report was an attached audio visualization conversion of the 17-second signal (heavily down-sampled and safety-processed) and a visual spectrogram.

Alex put on his headphones and clicked the audio clip.

The sound was very strange. It was like a deep-sea whale song that had been stretched, distorted, and mixed with numerous subtle sounds of metal friction and crystal growth. The overall presentation had a slow, solemn, and cold rhythm. There was no melody to speak of, yet it possessed an undeniable ”structure.”

He closed his eyes and activated Information Texture Discrimination.

The texture that fed back was a bit more ”vivid” than the Greenland pulse sequence. The cold, procedural feel remained, but the intent of ”inquiry” was clearer, even carrying an extremely faint ”expectation of confirmation feedback.” It was as if a lighthouse in a thick fog was not just shining its light, but had also let out an inquiring blast of its foghorn, then tilted its ear to listen for an Echo.

No malice. No friendliness. Only a cold ”interaction test” based on functionality.

Alex opened his eyes and let out a long breath.

The ”humming” from the South Pacific was no longer just a point on a model or a vortex on a weather map. It had emitted a clear ”sound.”

Though distant, weak, and full of unknown risks.

It was right there.

Active.

He replied to Team K: ”Received. Agree with the risk assessment and recommendations. Will begin targeted training. Please send the training protocols and safety samples.”

Turning off the terminal, he walked to the window. The Los Angeles night sky was unusually clear, and a few stars were visible. His gaze seemed to cross the vast Pacific, falling upon that restless stretch of sea.

The calm ”operation period” remained stable, but on the horizon, a new wind—carrying the scent of salty sea spray and unknown frequencies—had begun to blow.

He felt the steady operation of his abilities within him, the ample popularity in his account, the solid partners and career by his side, and the composure forged through one challenge after another.

”Come on,” he said silently to the night sky.

Whether it was another ”automated lighthouse” or something else entirely, he had enough time and chips to choose when and how to listen to that distant humming.
