From American Internet Celebrity to God Among Men

162: Chapter 162 Exploring the Boundaries and the Temperature of a Cup of Hot CocoaThe success of the core sound for ”Ark of Consciousness” was like a boulder thrown into the deep pool of Hollywood, creating ripples far beyond Alex’s expectations.

Over the next few days, his work email and screened business contact channels were flooded with a massive influx of new cooperation inquiries. These were no longer tentative invitations, but formal project proposals from major studios, renowned director studios, and even top-tier video game developers. The content also expanded from simple ”sound design” or ”scoring” to more strategic roles like ”holistic sound world-building” and ”interactive narrative audio guidance.” The figures on the quotes were increasingly astonishing, and the additional terms began to include phrases like ”box office/sales percentage.”

Marcus was both excited and troubled as he organized these opportunities, while Alex remained unusually calm.

”The screening criteria remain unchanged: whether the core creative concept of the project is interesting, whether the partner respects professionalism, and whether the timeline conflicts with existing commitments,” Alex said to Marcus. ”The highest priority remains Zack’s project; it must be completed perfectly. Additionally, the first EP of the ’Echo Manufacturing’ label under Universal is about to enter the promotional period and needs coordination. The follow-up resource docking for the platform’s ’Monthly Echo Star’ must also keep up. As for the new opportunities... make polite contact first, understand them in depth, don’t rush to agree.”

He knew well that a surge in popularity is often accompanied by temptations and traps. At this time, it was even more necessary to be steady and consolidate his position with confirmed successes rather than expanding blindly. He placed a few projects with the most potential and high alignment with his own ”sound narrative” philosophy (including a space opera sci-fi film and an indie game focused on atmospheric narrative) onto a ”deep evaluation list,” while leaving the rest to the team for preliminary assessment.

True recognition comes from within the industry. A senior board member of the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) contacted Alex through private channels, stating, ”We heard about your groundbreaking work in ’city of instantaneity’,” and invited him to attend an internal technical seminar shortly as a ”special guest” to share his insights on ”sound as an active narrative dimension.” This was a precious opportunity to enter the industry’s core circle and dialogue directly with top technical experts. Alex agreed immediately and began to seriously prepare his lecture—not to show off, but to truly organize and refine his insights, which fused extraordinary perception with professional practice.

On the platform side, the fifth issue of the ”Echo Blind Box” challenge was released, with the theme: ”Overture: Create a movie trailer-style soundtrack for any minute of your life.” Users were asked to select a mundane minute from their lives (such as washing up in the morning, commuting, or waiting for coffee) and add exaggerated epic, suspenseful, comedic, or romantic commentary and sound effects, ”reshaping” it into a movie trailer.

This challenge once again tapped into the users’ sense of humor and desire for expression. The submissions were filled with god-tier copywriting and clever use of sound effects: someone dubbed the process of squeezing onto the subway to work as an ”epic survival challenge” narration; someone described grocery shopping as a ”secret mission to retrieve key supplies behind enemy lines”; and couples even set the trivialities of cooking together to passionate romance movie trailer dialogue, which was both sickeningly sweet and hilarious.

Alex and his team also had a blast while screening and commenting on the live stream. They even tried using the faders on the film mixing console to ”boost” more exaggerated sound effects for some submissions in real-time, resulting in explosive live-streaming effects. This deep interaction and the ”playing together” atmosphere took the community cohesion of ”Echo Blind Box” to the next level.

Taylor’s new single ”Whispers of a Glimmer” was officially released across all platforms. There was no large-scale pre-heating bombardment; just Alex and Taylor simply sharing it on their respective social media accounts, accompanied by a link to the song and the sentence: ”For everyone who can still hear the faint glimmer within their hearts amidst the noise.”

The quality of the song itself and the combined influence of the two made it quickly land at the top of various streaming charts. Music critics called it ”a precise emotional massage,” while fans were intoxicated by the intimate and warm sense of dialogue within it. What was even more talked about was that in the arrangement details of the song, one could faintly hear the pure vibrational texture similar to the core sound of ”Ark of Consciousness,” forming a clever intertextuality. A music critic wrote: ”Alex Su is forming a unique ’sound signature’—an auditory aesthetic with meditative qualities that blends technological coldness with human warmth.”

When hearing this evaluation, Alex was trying out a new recipe with Taylor in the kitchen. He smiled and said to Taylor, ”It seems we accidentally created the prototype of a ’school of thought’.”

”That would be for the best,” Taylor said, carefully stirring the sauce in the pot, ”at least it proves that someone really understood the sounds we made.”

After dealing with these ”events in the sun,” Alex also took time to pay attention to the ”whispers in the shadows.”

The Architect reported back that the frequency of targeted anomaly scanning activities had further decreased, almost falling into silence, but had not completely disappeared, as if the other party had shifted into a deeper lurking observation. Alex instructed to continue monitoring and not to provoke them actively.

”Spirit of the Wasteland” fell into a long silence again after receiving the tape materials. Alex did not urge them, as the cooperation contract was already loose. He just occasionally thought about the strange signals from unknown sources recorded on those tapes, and the ”crystal collision” sounds captured in Sarah’s city soundscapes that were additionally recorded by the Nagra tape. These fragments seemed to point to the same obscure direction, but the clues and cognition he possessed were not enough to piece together the full picture.

He tried to apply and explore [Energy Perception] more systematically. In addition to using it intuitively in his creative work, he began to do some small experiments. For example, recording the same piece of music, using digital equipment and analog tapes respectively, and then comparing the differences in the energy fields when playing them under [Energy Perception]; or trying to ”listen” to the subtle sounds of energy flowing inside his own body under different materials and emotional states in an extremely quiet environment.

Most of these experiments did not produce immediate practical results; they were more like a cognitive pioneering. But Alex enjoyed it. He could feel that his perception of ”energy” was becoming more delicate and stable, just like muscles becoming stronger and more controllable through exercise. He even tried to combine this perception with the section on the ”gray area between the physical properties of sound and psychological perception” in the MPSE seminar manuscript he was preparing, forming some more insightful (and of course, rigorously scientifically packaged) viewpoints.

On Friday night, it started to drizzle in Los Angeles. Alex and Taylor canceled their original outing plans and decided to stay at home. They dug out an old documentary about the golden age of jazz, turned off the lights, and huddled on the thick carpet in the living room to watch it with a projector.

The sound of rain tapping on the roof and windows became the natural white noise of the documentary. In the film, those legendary musicians improvised in smoky clubs, with sweat and inspiration flying. At moving moments, Taylor would softly hum along to a complex saxophone melody, while Alex silently tapped the corresponding rhythm on his knee with his fingers.

Halfway through, Alex got up and went to the kitchen to make two cups of hot cocoa, adding marshmallows and a little cinnamon powder. When he returned, the documentary was at the part where an elderly drummer talked about ”rhythm is the breathing of time.”

He handed the cocoa to Taylor, and the two leaned against each other, the warm and sweet drink dispelling the slight chill of the rainy night. Alex relaxed his whole body, letting [Energy Perception] naturally diffuse into the room like a thin mist. He ”saw” the sound energy of the documentary reflecting gently on the walls, the energy of the raindrops falling in fragments, the warm radiation emitted by the hot cocoa, and the stable, peaceful, and vibrant energy field of Taylor beside him, harmoniously intertwining and resonating with his own field like two warm currents.

There were no problems to solve, no projects waiting to be completed, only the companionship of the moment, shared appreciation, and silent resonance.

”Sometimes I wonder,” Taylor said softly, her eyes still looking at the screen, ”what would I be doing now if I hadn’t met you? Maybe I would still be trying to write those ’safer’ songs, participating in those more ’conventional’ programs.”

”There is no ’if’.” Alex held her slightly cool hand, warming it with the temperature of his own palm, ”And, it was you who first heard the ’difference’ in my music. We found each other.”

Taylor turned her head, looking at him in the changing light and shadow of the projector, her eyes shining, and then leaned over and kissed him lightly on the cheek. ”Hmm, found each other.” She leaned back against his shoulder, a sigh of satisfaction in her voice, ”This is best.”

The rain outside the window gradually stopped, and a few sparse stars appeared in the gaps of the clouds. The documentary was nearing its end, and the old musicians’ aged yet still fiery performance seemed to be saying: All noise will eventually return to calm, and true resonance will continue to Echo in the calm.

Alex drank the last drop of slightly cool cocoa, feeling the heavy fulfillment and tranquility interwoven by career, exploration, love, and daily life. He knew there would still be challenges on the road ahead, and there might still be eyes in the dark, but the strength and warmth filling his body and mind at this moment were enough for him to face everything calmly.
