From American Internet Celebrity to God Among Men

164: Chapter 164 The Whispered Invitation and the Starlight Between FingersThe first internal test screening of the entire film ”city of instantaneity” was arranged at a small theater in Burbank equipped with a top-tier sound and visual system.

Participants were limited to the director, core creative team, high-level producers, and a few invited ”key partners”—Alex and his sound team were prominently among them.

The two-plus hours of viewing were a peculiar experience for Alex.

He was simultaneously immersing himself as an audience member in this cyberpunk epic woven together by visuals and sound, and acting as a creator, nervously examining the effect of every sound choice his team had made.

The quality of the film itself was unquestionable; Zack Snyder’s visual style combined with its profound core was executed to perfection.

And when those sound narrative elements meticulously polished by Alex’s team—from the oppressive pulsation of the ”Data Torrent,” to the loneliness interwoven with rust and echoes in the ”Memory Graveyard,” and finally to the pure and tragic core sound when the ”Ark of Consciousness” activated—merged perfectly with the visuals, driving the emotions ever higher, the entire theater was silent, with only the images and sounds speaking wordlessly.

Alex’s [Energy Perception] was operating passively in the darkness.

He could vaguely ”feel” that when those key sound scenes appeared, the collective emotional energy field in the screening hall would produce obvious resonance and fluctuations, especially when the ”Ark of Consciousness” core sound combined with the children’s humming to push the plot to its final climax; that complex emotional energy, mixed with shock, compassion, and hope, almost permeated the air like a tangible object.

The film ended, and the lights came on.

After a long silence, the producer took the lead, followed by spontaneous, enthusiastic applause from the entire screening hall.

The applause lasted for a long time, and many people’s eyes were moist.

Zack Snyder stood up, not looking at anyone else, but walked straight to Alex, hugged him tightly, and said in a slightly hoarse voice: ”Perfect. Without those sounds, this film would have lost half its soul.”

This was the highest praise from a director known for his strictness.

The members of Alex’s team were flushed with excitement.

They knew that their work was not just ”qualified,” but had truly become an inseparable, classic part of this masterpiece destined to be recorded in film history.

At the subsequent internal celebration party, Alex received countless congratulations, as well as business cards and cooperation offers from more heavyweight figures.

He maintained a proper humility, attributing the credit to his team and the director’s trust.

Hollywood is a realistic vanity fair, but true talent and contribution remain the hardest currency.

When he left the theater, it was already late at night.

Alex did not go home immediately but had the driver stop for a while at an observation deck in the Hollywood Hills that overlooked the city’s night view.

The night breeze was cool, and he stood alone, letting his [Energy Perception] spread out naturally, feeling the vast and complex energy pulsation of this city of dreams beneath his feet—ambition, talent, success, frustration, countless stories interwoven in the darkness.

He suddenly remembered the ”global anomalous acoustic event” mentioned in the ”Spirit of the Wasteland” technical summary.

Before a grander spatial-temporal scale and unknown dimensions, were the brilliant lights and clamor of the city beneath his feet just a brief, specific ”frequency”?

A strange feeling, interwoven with insignificance and vastness, surged into his heart.

But he did not feel panic; instead, he became more certain of his own path: within a limited life and known dimensions, to create as much ”resonance” that can touch people’s hearts as possible, whether through music, film, platforms, or those secret explorations.

This, in itself, was an answer to ”existence.”

Back home, Taylor hadn’t slept yet and was busy with her laptop in the living room.

Seeing him return, she closed the computer and brought him a glass of warm water.

”How does it feel?” she asked, her eyes filled with the joy of sharing glory, as well as an empathetic exhaustion.

”Like finishing a marathon, and also like standing at a new starting line.”

Alex took the glass, drank it in one gulp, pulled her into his arms, and smelling the familiar scent in her hair, only then did he feel truly relaxed.

”The film is great, and our part... I’m very proud.”

”You certainly should be proud.”

Taylor wrapped her arms around his waist, her voice muffled against his chest, ”I’m proud of you.”

A few days later, the eighth-week theme of ”Echo Puzzle” was released: ”The Silent Movement.”

It challenged users to find and record those ”meaningful sound silences” in daily life, or to provide an inner ”sound monologue” for a silent scene (such as an empty street, a stopped pendulum, or a sleeping pet).

This philosophical theme once again ignited the users’ deep creative enthusiasm, and the submissions were filled with poetic observations and inner-drama performances.

At the same time, the sixth phase of ”Echo Blind Box,” the ”Sound Archaeologist” challenge, went live, asking users to ”excavate” and reproduce a sound from the past that is disappearing or has already disappeared (such as old-fashioned phone dialing sounds, typewriter clicking, or traditional street hawking), and tell the story behind it.

This was both a tribute to sound cultural heritage and a clever way to map the focus on ”historical sounds” from the ”Spirit of the Wasteland” research into a way the public could participate.

The platform’s content depth and sense of social responsibility were quietly established through each meticulously designed challenge.

Alex took time to hold a meeting with Universal Music and the ”Echo Manufacturing” label to finalize the tracklist and release strategy for the first ”phantom singer” compilation EP.

He insisted on including an instrumental piece adapted from the urban soundscape samples of ”Monthly Echo Star” Sarah, as a tribute to the platform’s ecosystem.

Business and sentiment always found a balance in his hands.

That afternoon, Alex received a special, highly encrypted email from ”Spirit of the Wasteland.”

There were no attachments, only a line of text short enough to be heart-stopping, and a geographical coordinate (located somewhere on the Greenland ice sheet):

”A potential ’Source’ anomaly zone has been preliminarily located. The signal-to-noise ratio is extremely low, and the environment is extreme. Are you willing to participate in a short-term (no more than 72 hours), high-risk, purely scientific exploration as a ’field recording engineer’? All expenses and safety are covered by us. What you need to provide: top-tier field recording equipment, sensitivity to anomalous sounds, and absolute confidentiality and composure. No need to reply immediately; consider carefully. The attachment is the proposed extreme environment survival and work code (draft); burn after reading.”

Field exploration? The Greenland ice sheet? A potential ”Source”?

Alex looked at these words, his heartbeat accelerating slightly.

This was no longer about funding research or providing resources, but a direct invitation for him to step into that unknown territory.

The risks were undoubted; ”extreme” and ”high-risk” were not jokes.

But the word ”Source,” along with the other party’s recognition of his ”sensitivity,” radiated an irresistible temptation.

He did not make a decision immediately, but instead carefully read the draft code that would be destroyed immediately after.

It detailed the extreme climates, equipment requirements, and emergency plans that might be encountered, and even included a vague warning about ”potential atypical physiological or psychological effects,” with wording that was rigorous yet made the situation seem all the more extraordinary.

Closing the computer, Alex walked to the window, gazing out at the Pacific Ocean under the sunlight.

Ice sheets and oceans, silence and unknown sounds.

This invitation was like a door that had suddenly cracked open before him; behind it were scenes that could overturn his cognition, or perhaps unforeseeable dangers.

He needed time to weigh his options and discuss it with the very few people he could absolutely trust.

More importantly, he needed to evaluate what this step meant for his ”path to godhood under the spotlight”—was it an adventure that deviated from the main storyline, or an indispensable trial that touched the essence of the world?

In the evening, Taylor keenly sensed a hint of distraction in him.

She didn’t ask, but when he was practicing the piano, she sat beside him and casually played a gentle accompaniment.

The piano music flowed, needing no words.

Alex turned his head to look at her focused profile, and the melody under his fingertips unconsciously became warm and firm.

No matter how the road ahead is chosen, some anchors are always there.
