The Young Master in the Shadows

Chapter 517: GETTING STARTED

“So… It was really Olaf!” Ann said as she relaxed in her seat in front of the large window overlooking the entire Von Weise main island in addition to the newly risen island in the distance.

“Yes, mistress…. Using that guy as a reference, we already counted 41 agents in different departments with an additional 400 suspected to be,” A woman with a black veil knelt beside the chair and said. “We also confirmed that Dick, the previous head of the assassins division, was also a part of their network! It was Olaf who recommended him back then!”

“Damn it…” Ann frowned. Olaf was first employed by her later father, so any knowledge about how he got into the family had long been lost!

“Should we move to eliminate them, mistress?” the woman asked.

“No… Let’s not startle the snake. Now we are the ones in the dark, and they are the ones in the light… Let’s keep this status quo!” Ann replied, eyeing her assistant. At the moment, she had no idea how to trust, but she was sure this one was not a spy, as she had developed by her since she was young. It seemed like Victor’s depraved way to make an army of private loli maids was really the right one… If only he were not doing it for his perverted fetishes!

“Mistress?” the woman, feeling her mistress’s face grow dark, asked nervously.

“Just keep on gathering information for now, and let’s see what they are after!” she said.

“Understood!”

“About the tournament, is the final list ready?”

“Yes, the elder’s council has finally come to a consensus about the participants! There would be 27 with 3 backups! 20 of them are from the main branch, 10 from our faction, 4 from the white faction, and 6 from the black one!”

“Good, how many of Theodore’s sons managed to get through?”

“5… Mike, Roy, Arnold, Max, and Victor…”

“What? Victor, too?” Ann frowned.

“It was a last-minute decision to break a tie… The elder who proposed it is a suspect agent, though, he is the one who investigated Rex’s poisoning of Lara before…”

“Oh… They want Axel in the tournament?”

“As a backup… He will not be from the main team!” the woman corrected. “So the guys at the intelligence department believe they might want him to meet with someone!”

“Oh…” Ann frowned. “Did you tell Theodore?”

“Not yet, I was waiting to confirm it with you, as you can veto this… “

“How can I do that…. Victor is my favorite grandson after all! Let him go out and play!” Ann said with an evil smirk. Victor was her favorite not as a grandson, but as a distraction. He was so damn good at it that he had to go and be targeted by Dark Chamber! “Just make sure that the real one stays hidden when Axel is out… I don’t want the two of them to appear at the same time!”

“Ah….. Theodore just sent a report that the real Victor will leave this afternoon to go to Tetraquad City and attend Gary’s wedding. He seemed to have already made a deal with Axel that the latter would only have to hide for those two days, then they would reverse roles again!”

“What a headache…” Ann sighed. “Let them do as they see fit!” she said dismissively. Damn, Theodore and his perverted sons…. Each one of them was weirder than the other! Well… Their real grandfather was very eccentric in his own way, though. That’s why she, who hated all men before and only married out of necessity, fell for him almost immediately, and her idea about men changed right after!

“Understood… Then, what about you, mistress, will you participate in young master Garyʼs wedding party?”

“Nah… Let Octavia go alone… I still don’t want to be seen in one place with that old man!” Ann said with a sigh as she looked out of the window. “How is Rita?” She suddenly asked, wanting to change the subject.

“All the data she gave us is correct!” the woman said. “And our tests confirmed her claims, that bastard Von Zwei really did those experiments on her, if not for her awakening her bloodline at the last moment and managing to escape, things would have been very dire!”

“I see…” Ann sighed. Rita appeared a few days ago through the newly established secure emergency channel. She told them about everything that happened to her since she left a few months ago. It was a very unbelievable story, but Ann knew that it must have been true. They used Lie detection skills on her after all….

“How can her own father do that to her… Didn’t he know…”

“It doesn’t matter, the black faction is very old school, for them, women are disposable!” Ann said with disgust. “Did you discuss the future with her?”

“She said she was ready to do whatever the Matrairach requests as long as you assist in her revenge!”

“Good… Let her prepare! She will accompany me to the tournament!” Ann said with a smirk. She didn’t expect such a usable pawn to appear out of nowhere, but it was a pleasant surprise!

…

At the same time, in a castle on top of a rocky mountain, four siblings sat in front of each other in a luxurious living room with a maid, standing respectfully behind each one of them.

“This is awkward…” Yulian chuckled dryly, looking at both of his sisters who sat to the sides, then at his big brother, Perez, who sat in front of him, thoroughly inspecting his siblings… Especially Lily… Yulian didn’t blame him. Lily was really the prettiest girl he had ever seen.

He wanted to warn his brother that if he kept looking at her, it would be awkward later when he needed to stand up, but noticing Tulip looking at both of them, he decided to act as if he noticed nothing.

“Our mother wants us to get to know each other, so let’s just do that and finish with this!” Tulip said nonchalantly as if she didn’t want to be here. “As you all know, my name is Tulip. I have grown in the sunken Empire where I worked as a treasure hunter… I just got back to the clan and am yet to be assigned a role. Nowadays, I have a mansion in Rhasol Archipelago where I spend my time…” she said. “That’s it, I guess…”

“Mistress, your hobbies…” the maid from behind reminded her. This meeting was clearly arranged by their parents.

“Right, I like fishing, reading, and walking in the rain…” Tulip quickly finished.

“I am Perez. I grew up in Black Setties, then after I finished my family’s test, I came to Nest Castle… In the family, my position is that of a Demon Hunter. I also have a mansion in Wind City down the mountain where I live!” Perez said, keeping stoic. It was as if he was totally detached from the world and everything was beneath him. This persona of his was not like Tulip’s arrogance that alienated people, but the exact opposite, which forced others to want to get to know and submit to him! “My hobbies are horseback riding, collecting rare things, and discussing philosophy… I guess!”

Lily almost spat, hearing him. This guy was telling the truth; it was just, as always, not what other people believed. He even went as far as to reveal his true class in front of his siblings, but no one caught it except for her.

In Victor’s timeline, when she traveled and watched him as a crow, she only found him a bit infuriating for some reason… The only strange thing about him was that he was too clean for a young master! On top of it, he was always right, and knew about everything and how to do everything… He was Mr. Perfect!

He was so perfect that when he acquired the right to be the world’s emperor in the Jade dungeon, he presented it to the family without batting an eye!

It was only after she recalled her past life in the Spirit Empire that she finally understood what was going on and how dangerous her brother was. This guy was like Victor in wanting to always stay in the shadows, never stepping forward. Always scheming…. Well, in every family there should always be one of those… What deferred was how competent they were, and Perez was Victor-level competent!

Back then, it was her Mistress who uncovered his hidden X-ranked class after he made a mistake and tried to use it on the wrong guy, who turned out to be a clone of the Spirit Empress herself.

The news about his real power was not only a shock to his parents, but also to Lily herself, who always thought that he was a kind big brother!

Still, feeling it would be a waste to kill him, the Spirit empress forced him to slave away for her until he died on the battlefield.

Well… As long as this guy stayed out of her way, Lily didn’t plan to do anything to him; that was Victorʼs idea, too, when she told him about this. A dangerous knife was not her problem as long as it was not aimed at her; on the contrary, since they knew the truth, they could easily use him to take some blows for them in the future.

But if he were to dare and….

“Ehm… Lily, your turn…” Perez, feeling some kind of dangerous air around her as she glared at him, cleared his throat and reminded her that it was her turn.

“Ah… Right… I am Lily or Liliara, as I was named after my grandma... I grew up as a von Weise Assassin, as you all know, and just returned to the family… I am still awaiting my assignment!” she said, keeping it brief. “My hobbies are… None, I like to take care of my weapons though, if this counts… I also like to crack things when I am bored…”

Yulian frowned, looking at her. After her cleaning, he couldn’t help but feel that she had changed. Although that crazy air around here was still present. She seemed to have acquired some new kind of arrogance. One that far exceeded Tulip’s and Perez’s. It was as if she were some kind of goddess or something. That the world in front of her was just a game! Still, since he only spent a little time with her, he was not sure.

“Crack things?” Tulip asked.

“Yeah… Like guys do boxing and such when angry… I like to ‘Crack’ Things…” she said. The world crack made both of her brothers pull their legs together, though for some reason.

“Good for you…. Your turn, Yulian…” Preze said, alerting his brother, who was lost in his thoughts,

“Ah… My name is Yullian, as you all know… I grew up in Weiren Principality and just got back to the family!” he said nervously. “My hobbies are…” he paused. Did he have any hobbies? “Martial arts… I think…” he finally said. This was the thing he mostly did during his family test.

“Have you guys been assigned your tasks yet?” Perez asked immediately after Yulian finished, nearly interrupting him.

“Not yet, it will happen after the tournament for me!” Tulip replied.

“The same here…” Lily nodded.

“I have… My first mission is to go attend some guyʼs wedding as the family’s representative… and do a few things there…” Yulian sighed, glimpsing briefly at Lily before looking away.

Lily quickly understood something. “Is it someone you know?” she asked casually.

“He was at Victor Von Weise’s wedding… Gary von Geldstadt! That’s all I can say…”

“Oh…” Lily acted surprised, but she was not, though. She was sure Yulian was sent to get that feather from Victor. Since he was technically his brother-in-law, this would be perfect! “That Gary guy is not bad… I have no idea he managed to befriend a depraved pervert like Victor!” she just said.

“Men are just like that…” Yulian said. If he didn’t know any better, he would have really believed that Lily hated Victor’s got from the angry expression on her face and the way she spat the latter’s name.

“Will that depraved bastard be there?” she suddenly asked with a murderous glint in her eyes.

“No idea…” Yulian lied. The family had just confirmed that Victor would be there, but he was not going to say it here.

“If you see him, can you do me a favor?” she spat.

“Look, I am not going to create trouble between the families…”

“Nothing like that… I just want you to tell him something…”

“What?” Yulian asked as her other siblings looked at her curiously.

“Tell him to enjoy his life as best as he can… The next time I see him will be the day he becomes a eunuch!” she said with an evil smile that sent shivers not only in Yulian’s back, but even in Tulip’s and Perezʼs.

At that moment, her siblings discovered that she might be the craziest member of their family!

…

In a quiet room in the White Grand hotel, it was past midnight when Axel finally finished tossing up the three girls, leaving them exhausted and barely conscious in bed. Standing up, he covered them with a bedsheet and headed to take a shower.

He finished quickly, then, after checking on the girls again to make sure that none of them ended up choking after swallowing all that stuff, he walked into the balcony where he lit up a cigarette and took a deep breath before puffing a cloud of smoke from his mouth.

“That’s life…” he said with a sigh. Tonight, he was really lucky… The presidential suite that he planned to take was not available. In fact, the entire hotel turned out to be completely booked out with the exception of this single bedroom!

With no other choice, the girls could only reluctantly agree to stay with him here, then one thing led to another and…. Yeah…

Axel was not a fool; he knew the hotel’s situation was not a coincidence as he secretly asked the concierge when he led them to the room, and the latter confirmed his guess and told him that this hotel was booked up by one lady, Margret!

Yeah… It was that bitch… Although he didn’t like her, he was thankful for what she did tonight!

“...” he puffed another cloud of smoke, then…
