The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Anning didn’t know that there was someone in the Capital still thinking about her.

After the college entrance exam, she rested at home for a few days and began to trust Xiao Yuan.

She told Yang Erchou that she wanted to go to the Provincial City to play for a couple of days and buy some things.

Yang Erchou quickly handed her money: ”Go and enjoy yourself for a few days. Don’t worry about spending money when you reach the Provincial City. Just play well and buy some nice clothes while you’re at it. We need to dress well for university; can’t let others look down on us.”

Anning nodded constantly: ”I know.”

She was just about to pack her things to leave when something happened at Yang Dachou’s house.

Fuyu’s wife had been arguing with Wang Shushu lately, insisting that if Fugui’s bride’s dowry was high, she should get compensated, or she would keep Wang Shushu in turmoil.

Fuyu’s wife’s brothers, who were quite a few, also said that if the dowry wasn’t compensated, they would smash Yang Dachou’s house.

The brawl continued endlessly, and Fugui’s girlfriend finally broke up with him.

Fugui went to ask why, only to find that the girl had already started dating someone else. When he confronted her, the new boyfriend was just visiting, and Fugui got into a fight with him.

He fought at the girl’s house and obviously didn’t come out well, getting beaten up by the new boyfriend and the girl’s brother until his head was broken, and he ended up in the hospital.

Wang Shushu had yet to settle the eldest daughter-in-law when the younger son got into such trouble, leaving him extremely anxious and angry.

Yang Dachou went to Yang Erchou’s house, wanting to borrow some money.

No matter what he said, Yang Erchou kept saying no, refusing to lend.

Yang Dachou’s face turned sour.

Yang Erchou privately told Li Cuixia that he’d be crazy to lend money to the eldest. Now, for marrying a wife, he borrowed money, and when the daughter-in-law has a baby, will he ask for a loan again? When the grandson needs money for school, will he also reach out for more? Can he help in the short term but help all lifelong?

He still had two daughters, and his money was saved for them, definitely not for his two good-for-nothing nephews.

Yang Erchou was particularly clear-minded about these matters.

When Grandma was hospitalized, he paid the money because it was his duty as a son. That was his own flesh and blood; even though they weren’t very good to him, they raised him up, helped him get a wife, so he had to take care of them in their old age. But why should he support his elder brother and nephews? He wasn’t obligated to them.

Li Cuixia relayed all this to Anning, and Anning felt that her father was still quite decent, had correct principles, and was clear-headed, a person who knew how to make the right choices and not be taken advantage of.

Thus, she felt very at ease when she left.

When Anning arrived in the Provincial City, Xiao Yuan and Xiao Qin were busy moving house.

He stopped working on the construction site, and the two patients Xiao Qin cared for were discharged, so Xiao Yuan told Xiao Qin not to go there anymore.

He rented a house in the suburbs, moved with Xiao Qin, and bought a second-hand tricycle that could be treated as scrap. After buying some tools and parts for repairs, he painted it, making it look almost brand new.

Then he began buying flour, meat, and vegetables, preparing to steam buns to sell.

Xiao Qin cleaned the house, watched Xiao Yuan washing the steaming racks, and worried a bit: ”Second brother, can we really sell these buns once we steam them?”

Xiao Yuan was very confident: ”We can, rest assured, Second brother guarantees you’ll make money.”

Xiao Qin thought of how little the capital was, even if they lost money, the two could work for half a month or a month to earn it back. So she didn’t say much more.

She went over to help Xiao Yuan prepare vegetables and chop stuffing. As the two were busy, there was a knock at the door.

Xiao Qin rushed to open the door and was startled seeing the person outside: ”You, how come...”

Xiao Yuan put down his work to glance at the door and, seeing Anning, smiled: ”Quickly, come in.”

Anning entered with a smile: ”What are you doing? Planning to steam buns?”

”Of course.”

Xiao Yuan placed a stool under the tree shade for Anning to sit: ”We just moved house, preparing to steam buns for sale.”

Xiao Qin looked at Xiao Yuan, then at Anning, still didn’t quite understand.

She knew Anning, of course, but wasn’t close with her.

Mainly, the Xiao Family’s financial situation was poor, while Anning’s family was considered affluent in the village. Moreover, Anning was always studying, not really familiar with other girls in the village.

To Xiao Qin, Anning was someone she envied while also clearly realizing she was someone she would look up to for life.

She knew young lads in the village secretly referred to Anning as a fairy. Many young lads secretly liked Anning but dared not express it. To them, Anning was someone to aspire to but not reach, hence they all called her a fairy.

But...

Xiao Qin never expected her own second brother to know Anning, much less to be so familiar, with the two acting as if they grew up together with no awkwardness at all.

Xiao Qin never saw any interaction between her second brother and Anning. How did they know each other?

With Anning’s looks and conditions, how did she fancy her own illiterate second brother? It wasn’t logical.

No matter what Xiao Qin thought, she still showed a full smile to Anning: ”Have you eaten yet? I’ll make you something to eat first.”

Anning nodded: ”I really haven’t eaten yet; I found my way here right after getting off the bus, and now my stomach is growling.”

Xiao Qin quickly started a fire to cook.

Xiao Yuan freed himself to take a stool and sit beside Anning, chatting with her.

Xiao Qin, cooking while secretly observing Xiao Yuan and Anning, saw them sitting very close, and Anning was good to her second brother, speaking in a soft voice, eyes full of affection when she looked at him.

Xiao Qin shook her head.

She really didn’t understand what Anning was thinking.

A girl who finished high school and would definitely get into university, what kind of man couldn’t she find, yet she fancied her illiterate second brother?

Thinking of her second brother’s face, Xiao Qin felt Anning was probably like her Great Grandma and was attracted to his face.

Xiao Yuan chatted a bit more with Anning, got up to pour her a cup of water, went out for a loop, and returned with a watermelon and some marinated snacks.

Xiao Qin mixed cucumber salad, stir-fried some meat dish, and steamed rice.

She finished cooking as dusk fell.

Xiao Yuan placed a table in the courtyard, and the three sat around to eat.

Xiao Qin asked Anning during dinner: ”Ningning, how did you do on the exam this time? Are you confident?”

Anning put down her chopsticks: ”The exam went pretty well. I plan to apply to Imperial University; I should be able to get in.”

Xiao Qin glanced at Xiao Yuan.

She began to worry, really worried for Xiao Yuan.

Is Anning good?

Even for Xiao Qin as a girl to say, she’s good, indeed good, simply too good. But precisely because she’s too good, she feels her second brother doesn’t match up.
